In case you weren't aware, the third instalment in the Theatrhythm series - due out in Japan on 26th March - will be themed around the Dragon Quest series, now that the Final Fantasy franchise has been just about been mined dry between the previous two entries. The rhythm-based music series aims to celebrate beloved Square Enix RPG games by featuring tracks and songs that span the company's rich history.
In a recent interview with Japanese game magazine, Gamestalk, Ichiro Hazama - the game's producer - confirmed that there will be roughly 5-6 tracks per game, so every main-series title is given representation. Additionally, Hazama-san talked about post-release DLC, saying that the team would be paying close attention to fan response to the main game to see which tracks are most wanted. It's a bit disappointing seeing that Theatrhythm Dragon Quest has such a low song count considering that the last entry - Theatrhythm: Curtain Call - had literally hundreds, but the DLC should help alleviate this.
As to whether or not this'll get a western release is anyone's guess. The previous two Theatrhythm games made it over, but Dragon Quest isn't nearly as prominent in the West as Final Fantasy. Would you buy this if Square Enix localised it?

After The standard Curtian Call set that's horrible. I'm definitely staying far away from this as it will just be an even worse dlc crunch. Just give us these songs on CC please. I'd be happy to buy some of them.
Agreed with Spoony_Tech. 60 is wayyyyy too few to have standard if the the amount of time for each song is similar to CC. SE gettin greedy again lol.
Well I'm not surprised. DQ doesn't have the most diverse song catalog anyway. Most games tend to sound similar and not in the "they have the same composer" way but more in the fact that they use and update many of the same songs throughout the series....Buying the game anyway.
@JeanLuc_Vaycard Do we even know the price point or the amount of DLC? It's too soon to cry "greed" yet
This won't sell as good outside of Japan anyways. FF is the bigger name and better music. Like was said above, this might not make it over here. They would make more money imo of it was dlc for CC. I would buy 10 or more.
As much as I would want to buy this, it's Dragon Quest, chances are we'll never see it in Eurooe. stares longingly at the DQ7 remake, Dragon Quest Heroes and DQ10
The first game had 70 so maybe they're planning a Dragon Quest Curtain Call already? Honestly, if this doesn't get out of Japan, I don't see why these songs couldn't be added as DLC to Curtain Call. Is it really enough to justify a separate release?
There needs to be a Thetrhythm game on Nintendo music that would be awesome!
I'm not big into Dragon Quest, so the price point would have to be significantly lower, and I may still hold out for a Curtain Call. I am intrigued by the vertical gameplay, to its credit.
Should Theatrhythm Kingdom Hearts emerge, though... Done. It's already done, even if it never exists. But it must. My heart is already connected to it.
I never knew the series had so many tracks
But in all honesty, what happened to Curtain Call in terms of DLC was a travesty. You pay roughly 40€ for the game and, if you wantall the DLC songs, another 80+
Sure, a buck per item doesnt sound all that bad on paper, but if you look at the big picture, its ridiculous.
Square should really really get their stuff together...
This amount of DLC, and dont get me wrong, the main game is jam packet ful of songs already, nothing to complain there, is simply insane, made even worse without any form of pakage deals (Game packs etc)
Then there is stuff like not releasing games at all, franchise milking, not unlocking their entire FF PSP library for PS TV use (yes, i hate them for THAT)...
You could say that square isnt really all that "customer oriented" these days...and thats teh friendly version.
Now if Nintendo created a rhythm game with their famous IPs....
Curtain Call has an absurd amount of content in it--nearly as much as a Smash game and maybe more. I've never stopped playing it since day one and I know nothing about Final Fantasy.
With such a tiny set list, the Dragon Quest installment will be much less enticing to people who are only fans of rhythm games or only fans of Dragon Quest.
60 tracks is minimal compared to FFTCC's 220+, but I'd still buy it as long as it has button controls too.
I'd still buy it day one. I LOVE Theatrhythm.
I'm not a big FF fan but I absolutely adore Curtain Call. So even though I never played DQ, this would be an instant buy for me if it made it overseas.
Nintendo and SEGA should get in on this series too. A Theatrhythm: Zelda would literally print money and a Theatrhythm: Sonic the Hedgehog would probably become one of my all time favorite games.
I would buy this. They should just release it digitally to save on production costs if they're worried it won't sell. I'd still buy it even if it didn't get regional translations. I might even import it if it doesn't get released here. I just wish the 3DS wasn't region locked so I wouldn't have to import a system.
Yeah, I have no interest in Final Fantasy whatsoever. I'd buy this if it came out here. It's too bad Nintendo region lock their consoles and Square Enix assume the West wants nothing but Final Fantasy.
What you should do, Squeenix? Release a few of these songs as CC DLC and gauge interest in this being localized. No risk, but a potential reward.
60 songs does not sound like much after being spoiled with CC's song list, of course.
Dragon Quest music has a HUGE place in Japanese culture (way more than Final Fantasy). It's to the point where it's in school textbooks, and the Junior High down the road from here plays the opening theme every morning over loudspeakers while kids are going to school. When you compare that to how unknown a lot of the music is in the US/EU, it wouldn't surprise me if the game didn't make it over. I'm not even sure it would sell that well, though I'd still prefer it being released at least digitally.
However, Dragon Quest is heavily composed for orchestra, and many songs either sound too similar or lack the rhythm to be in this game. Ultimately, I'm not even sure how well this is gonna work, so 60 songs doesn't surprise me at all.
