Masahiro Sakurai has published a new "Smash Bros. Diaries" entry in the latest issue of Game Informer, and one question in particular struck a chord with Smash fans: had he ever considered allowing the fighter unlocks in the 3DS version to transfer over to the Wii U version?
Although Sakurai's answer started with a firm "no", he later elaborated on why leaving Super Smash Bros. fighters locked was integral to the gameplay of the franchise. Sakurai also references the fact that unlocking the fighters is far easier than it was in previous titles.
One thought-provoking comment shared by Sakurai was that, at one point, he "considered just opening up all the fighters from the start on the Wii U". However, unlocks were left in for the fans after realising that players genuinely look forward to the "Challenger Approaching!" segments.
Sakurai stands by his decision not to unlock fighters, stating that "either way, this is a game you can still play long after you've unlocked everyone, so I don't think it's a big problem."
What do you think? Would you have liked to have had access to the whole roster from the moment you booted up the Wii U edition of the game, or do you think unlocking all the characters is part of the appeal? Let us know by posting a comment.

Yeah, I agree. It's more satisfying to unlock someone.
BTW, My first unlock for the Wii U version was Duck Hunt Duo. :3
Yeah I'm one of those people that LOVES the challenger approaching thing, it just makes me happy.
Personally I was never interested in unlocking the characters in the Wii U version. The new additions just didn't interest me.
I bought the game and went online. After a thousand matches (and some days later) I tried versus and got all the challenger approaching consecutively.
That was actually pretty annoying at first but I guess it was enjoyable lol.
I personally hate it, when games serve you everything on a silver platter right from the start.
Unlocking certain things always feels satisfying and honestly, its not done often enough these days.
Unlocks give a certain incentive to tackle specific challenges.
For instance, id never have played cruel smash if it wasnt for the unlockables. I think its a frustrating mode, but it payed off.
Eh, personally I feel like the option should have been there to carry over the 3DS unlocks to Wii U. That includes characters and custom parts, and we maybe could've taken it a step further by allowing you to unlock CDs in the 3DS version to jump start your music collection process for Wii U.
The way it is set up now is that a lot of the relevant game content - the aforementioned characters, custom parts, as well as stages and music - is locked behind either uninteresting game modes, frustrating game modes, or just requires you to grind single player over and over and over...
So I dunno. I definitely think they should have approached unlocks differently in this game, without having to remove them entirely. Frankly, I'm more annoyed I can't send custom moves to the Wii U version. I spent a lot of time grinding Smash Run and other modes to get custom moves I wanted for certain characters (and grab some for others I didn't!) and you're going to tell me I can't send them over to the Wii U game? Sure, I can pre-build a character and do it that, but then I can't edit the character on the Wii U...
Smash is probably the only game I really play randomly, without aiming to any goal or achievement; even with all characters unlocked from the begin, I would have enjoyed the game with no problems.
Still I admit it, it's an awesome thrill hearing the sound of a challanger approching, wondering who you gonna have to fight and having to beat it in a 1vs1 for gain the right to use that character.
In my opinion Smash didn't need to keep the unlockable system, but I'm glad it's still there, I'm surely in that range of players that "genuinely look forward to the -Challenger Approaching!- segments."
I definitely enjoy unlocking characters. The roster is already so big I don't find it necessary to have all of it available from day one. I love the thrill of finding a new character.
I personally think there should have been more that were locked since I like the idea of having to fulfill certain conditions in order for them to appear. Ideally I think you should have to unlock maybe 20 of the characters but in the end I am not really complaining since the game is so good it would feel wrong to nitpick about something as small as that!
I think maybe the idea of having the Original 8 and the Original 8 Smash 64 stages being the only thing you get until you unlock the gazillions of other things in specific other ways except Adventure Modes would give the game a longer play span and more joy and accomplishment for the players and especially for people who wanna play Shiek or Captain Falcon online because it feels much better that they worked for it.
Unlocking was always a thrill in Smash and I'd always try to unlock as much characters as possible in Smash Brawl without doing Subspace.
I still haven't unlock 2 stages yet. I'm too busy playing something else to put time on cruel smash. They should at least put the stages in the select screen but lock it and display info how to unlock it. If I didn't research some Wiki, I wouldn't have known which and what mode to play.
Having a "Challenger" come up when you're playing with your friends is priceless! Besides fighting for the win, you fight for the chance to unlock the new character! We had a blast here, and saw it happen when playing with family and friends visiting, it was a lot of fun!
I agree unlocking fighters was super easy. The ability to transfer custom moves would have been nice though. Those thing are hard to come by especially on the Wii U version. I've played over 100 hours between the 2 version yet have only collected about half of the special moves.
Of course having all custom moves unlocked would have been nice but where is the fun in that
I liked how we had multiple of unlocking everything in Brawl. Honestly, the unclocking in Melee was downright stupid sometimes. Who actually wants to do the 15-minute melee? Ugh... And unlocking Mewtwo and Game & Watch was just a chore...
I hated that there were so many characters unlocked at the beginning. Loved unlocking everyone in Melee. I remember unlocking Mewtwo and thinking it didn't take that long (LOL).
The artificial enjoyment in unlocking all the characters isn't what it used to be. When I already know all the characters on the roster, I just want to play as all of them.
I love the total number of stages and fighters that are available, but I wish they made more of the fighters unlockables and I especially wish they started off with about 1/2 the total number of stages like in Melee. The joy of unlocking the stages, modes and characters after putting in all that work or getting them by surprise was one of the best things about the game.
While I think Smash Wii U is a fantastic game, I just felt like I was given too much from the get go.
I'm amazed he didn't consider unlocking them by connecting the 3DS with the unlocked characters.
I wanted to unlock a lot more characters, so this would have been terrible in my opinion.
Heck, I wouldn't mind if only the original eight were available from the start. It'd mean getting to see that Challenger Approaching screen even more.
If it were up to me (and it's not ) I would have all the characters available from the beginning of the game for the sake of tournaments and stuff and you could unlock alt skins/costumes, like alph for beatung Classic mode with olimar or daisy for winning 10 matches as peach. But I'm not complaining - everything is a lot easier to unlock this time anyway, and you don't have to trudge through another subspace emissary more to unlock everyone the "easy way"
I don't feel strongly about either way. If the challengers approaching segments weren't in the game, it honestly wouldn't bother me. However, it's not hard to unlock all the characters and it happens fast for most players.
Honestly, if characters were ALL unlocked, we'd actually be able to try everybody out and find a favorite. It was overwhelming when I first booted it up!
@JakeOfAllTrades **Locked
I'm glad that he didn't do this. It would have felt terrible to have everyone from the beggining. The lack of subspace emmisary already makes it harder to take all the characters in. That was a great way to have you try almost everyone in Brawl.
@JakeofAllTrades There's and edit button you know.
I think it wouldn't be as big a problem if they wouldn't reveal who every single playable character was prior to release. When the N64 and GC versions came out we only knew the initial roster. Everything else was trial, error and surprise. With Brawl and the U they let every single little detail slip so when you started the game you had no idea what the initial roster was but usually expected more than what was there.
I think I would have enjoyed unlocking if I hadn't unlocked them already in the 3DS version. There should've been a transfer option.
I really enjoyed unlocking them all in Brawl and the 3DS game.
As much as I'd like too have all of them unlocked, I feel that it would take out a huge, fun part of the Game too have them all unlocked at the start. It reminds me of the 3DS Street Fighter Game.
@MetalK9 That would be amazing.
I kinda got a bit annoyed that most of the characters were unlocked, would've been nice if half were locked and half were unlocked.
While I do like the idea of unlocking character as it makes it satisfying I would rather have them all unlocked from the start as if you just bought the game and invited your friends over then you won't have all the characters unlocked.
It's kindaof a double edge sword. Do you please the people who want to unlock things or have them unlocked from the start for people who don't have the time to unlock characters and have the character they want to play as from the start.
Oh, I thought the Duck Hunt Duo were the only unlockable characters. But my son did get to the game before I did.
...Walks away mumbling...
Stupid global saves. What the heck is the point of having profiles, if they don't matter for your biggest game?
I still like how F-Zero X did it of offering an unlock all button press code for those of you who don't want unlock all the characters conventionally. That way you can please people who like to be rewarded with unlocks as well as please those who want to start playing the game at its fullest.
Yes, unlocking them would have been great - SO WHY CAN'T I? Why does the Wii U have a separate profile for each player but then SSBU - of all games -shares the game, so that multiple profiles share everything? Which stupid moronic hypocritical idot at Nintnedo says unlocking things is fun, but it's only fun for the first player, everybody else doesn't get to unlock anything? I swear every once in awhile I put this game back in and get so mad all over again b/c I'm looking at all the challengers unlocked and half the challenges finished and I've hardly done anything yet.
Stupid moronic hypocritical Nintnedo. Unlocking is fun, so you can't do it. Typical Nintnedo logic.
@ryanator008 Artificial enjoyment.
The fact that most of the roster was available from the beginning combined with the character reveals online really ruined the element of surprise . Part of the fun was discovering the requirements on your own . The games have gotten easier and easier to the point where I see why many have lost interest , like me .
I've gone from several hundred hours on melee to maybe 200 on brawl to about 10 or 15 on smash u . Part of the reason is that almost everything is available right from the beginning ! No fun in my opinion .
Remember when we used to get items to find and battle legendary pokemon instead of getting them right away with ease? Good times. Really hope Smash Bros doesn't go that route. Unlocking characters is actually really fun (as long as they don't require hours upon hours to unlock).
You should have. Unlocking characters was so boring this time around.
Melee did it the best.

No. Its bad enough Mario Kart 8 made it painfully easy to unlock everything, games need to be a challenge. If you're not good at them, GET GOOD at them or play something else. I'm all for accessibility, but there is almost no reason to play mario kart 8 offline after you've unlocked all the characters.
I miss the days of having to get ridiculously good scores to unlock that one final track/character. Those days are over.
I wish he had locked more characters and stages. I've always loved unlocking stuff from the previous games and this time....it felt shallow, as if there's barely any content and replay value in the game for single players compared to past games.
I myself would love having way more characters locked on both systems - some easy and some that takes a bit more time. Unlocking stuff is just so much fun!
At the same time we're constantly running into trolls who manages to get the game way early and spoil everything.
Unlocking in the newest games is too easy. I preferred how they did it in Brawl and Melee. You should have to earn SOMETHING in these games, starting with a full roster makes playing the game almost pointless. I really miss the Subspace Emissary also
I prefer earning things in games.
Personally, I'm glad that everything was easier this time around. I still have stages in previous Smash games that I'll never unlock.
When my friends come to Smash, they want everything unlocked and ready to go.
I always love those "Challenger Approaching!" segments. Part of me even wish that more characters was locked so I can have those types of battles more.
One of the reasons I loved Melee so much was the challenger approaching screens. Brawl and Smash 4 made it too easy.
@AugustusOxy So you call playing a game for 20 hours just to get a character that isn't even that good a "challenge"?
I'm glad that I didn't have to unlock most characters. I barely even use them aside from Lucina. Why would they even reveal the character and then have you unlock them? We already know that they're here. It's kind of pointless. I was hoping that there would be some new unrevealed characters but nope. Just returning characters like Wario and Ness...
Challenger approaching never gets old to me
I do miss the massive list of unlockable characters and stages and the weird ways to do it like beat etc on etc difficulty or do this challenge.
These days I don't think unlocking characters should be a big part of a fighting game, unless they are unlocked via a story mode.
You don't need to add chores, grinding and padding into a fighter, if the fighter is good people should want to play it because they enjoy playing it, and the game should have a good online to help players find people of a similar skill level to play with.
I remember when i unlocked MR.Game and Watch for the very first time on melee, man... what a LOL moment i had.
It would have been better if half of them were locked and it look months to get the rest. Not in less then a weekend we had the whole roster unlocked. I mean, how many stars are in mario 3d world? I like the challenge of unlocking and collecting...that's why I like Nintendo games. Getting every missile pack or heart piece. It's too overwhelming to have like 50 characters to choose from day 1.
I would have preferred more of the roster, & stages be unlockables. To me, that's part of the Smash's fun, is unlocking. Like some here have said, it shouldn't be made too difficult, but not too easy. Having most of the roster from the get-go removes some of the potential for more fun. Edit: As I recall, most of Melee's roster was locked at first, & I think a good portion/chunk of Brawl's was, too.
I wish at least half the roster was locked, for me unlocking is half the fun. Plus I got the game and was like... "Who do I play as?" There was just so many choices, I prefer having to put in more effort to unlock everything, not necessarily making it too challenging but at least requiring a bit more playtime...
My hard drive just failed and I had to buy a new one. I was able to transfer my smaller games to the new hard drive, but not the big ones, so I lost all of my SSB save data. Now I kind of wish I didn't have to unlock them all again...
I enjoy playing Smash Wii U a lot, but unlocking the characters in this game did not really mean anything. I mean there was only a few to unlock. Let's see... Dark Pit, Wario, Duck Hunt, Rob, Dr. Mario, Game and Watch. Not many to unlock. Yeah, just did not seem the same unlocking characters this time around. Maybe cause of the 3DS I guess. Would not have mattered to me if all characters were playable from the get go on Wii U version.
woulda liked have all characters unlockd from the start. saves me the trouble
I'm more the unlock guy: I would't mind starting with just a few chrct. It adds more sense of achievement imo
They had way few unlockable characters.
I love unlocking characters and figuring them out! I was a little sad it was so easy to do it in Smash 4. I think I had everyone unlocked in the first day. Honestly, I think I'd prefer an intense unlock session to a DLC Mewtwo. If he's worth it to have in my game make me work for it, not pay extra.
I love hearing that siren go off when a new character approaches. I'm glad Sakurai kept it the same way it has been all of these years.
I wish they would keep some of the characters secret until the game comes out and not tell all of the unlockables. I love this game but I'm not nearly as excited as I would be if there were surprises.
I'm just glad games still have unlockables instead of just reserving hidden content for DLC. I will admit though I unlocked everyone in both games very quickly without even trying. I still remember unlocking mewtwo on melee by having 99 minute CPU fights while I went to school, coming home and doing it again.
Why were the 140 challenges so hard in this game!? Nintendo is trying to make me kill myself while attempting to do them!! I could have had a heart attack if Game & Watch used his "lucky 9" attack on finale stage during the tedious all star on hard mode with all characters challenge. WHY does Italy only have to complete all star on easy mode to get the challenge done??? Everyone else has to do hard mode! WHY WHY WHY????????????? Nintendo favors Italy and hates all other countries apparently.
@MetalK9 I agree. Having nothing to unlock wouldn't really ruin it for me, but I always love seeing that Challenger Approaching! screen.
Heck, the more there is to unlock the better. Even if the first bunch come easily, there's still the feeling of achieving something instead of it all being just handed to you.
I kept waiting for more unlockable stages but they never came.
Personaly i would be so happy if only the miis were playable at the begining. It would be like the 'creation of smash' miis hunting the characters from their own worlds to bring them to smash. So epic!
Here's what they should do. Start with Jigglypuff, everyone else locked, go
I'm OK with how they did the unlocks this time around for WiiU. There were fewer locked characters and all you really needed to do was keep playing. This was particularly gratifying because I'd already gone through the grind of unlocking everyone on 3DS in which there were no freebies.
I am happy that he didn't unlock them all from the start. I love to unlock characters!
