Monday morning can be a dreary time, but Nintendo of Europe has sent out the Download Update details for the coming week to bring some sunshine into your life. After a two week absence we see the return of Wii downloads on the eShop, some retro classics, DLC, loads of discounts and more. Let's get to the details.
Wii U eShop
Kirby's Adventure Wii (Nintendo, €19.99 / £17.99) - There doesn't appear to be a launch discount for this Wii download, but it gives European gamers some fun Kirby time while North America looks ahead to Kirby and the Rainbow Curse this week. This is a fairly straight Kirby platforming adventure, with the usual controls, abilities and gameplay that can be either accessible or pretty challenging, depending on your approach. We were huge fans of this Wii title in our review.
Puzzle Monkeys (Log Games, €2.99 / £2.99) - Another puzzle title on the eShop, this time with coloured falling blocks that need to be matched up in groups of three, with the promise that it'll take advantage of both button and touch screen inputs. There are two modes and online leaderboards, but we'll let you know whether it's all monkey business in our review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (Konami, $7.99) — The second Game Boy Advance entry in the trilogy, this one perhaps has a little graphical bump over its predecessor while serving up more of the series' action-exploration platforming; you play as the peculiarly named Juste Belmont trying to rescue a friend. They must be some friend to support that crazy name. We were full of praise for this adventure in our Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance review.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Capcom, €6.99 / £6.29) — This is the Game Boy Advance re-release of the iconic SNES game; with terrific sprite graphics and classic music to help you along, we suspect this one will make liberal use of the Wii U save state and restore point functionality. An addition in this version is the Arrange Mode, which throws in tougher levels and bosses from other games in the franchise. We'll review this version, but in the meantime you can check out our glowing recommendation for the SNES original.

3DS eShop
Chat-A-Lot (Teyon, €3.99 / £3.59 until 5th March, will then be €7.99 / £7.19) - They chatting app promises much, with groups able to get together via the 3DS with text and voice chat options. We feel that the quality of voice chat, in particular, isn't up to snuff - we were fairly critical in our Chat-A-Lot review.
Best of Arcade Games - Bubble Buster (Bigben Interactive, €9.99 / £8.99) - This series continues with another self-explanatory title, this time offering 50 levels in an Adventure mode; we'll see whether we need to burst its bubble in a review.
Best of Board Games - Solitaire (Bigben Interactive, €9.99 / £8.99) - We're not short of Solitaire options on the 3DS, with this one offering five variations and an Adventure mode with 40 challenges; we'll see what cards we get in a review.
3DS Retail Downloads
Flap Flap (Bigben Interactive, €7.99 / £7.19) - This will apparently be available at retail in addition to the eShop, and who are we to argue? This has Flappy Bird-esque mechanics but does at least appear to have multiple environments and something resembling a level structure.
Luv Me Buddies Wonderland (O2 Games, €24.90 / £19.90)
3DS DLC

So letdown the 9 quid first week price point won't be continuing...
Castlevania on VC for me. Already got Kirby's Adventure on disc.
No discount for Kirby? I hadn't topped up my eShop balance assuming it would be discounted.
Still waiting for Lego City Undercover sale. I'll settle for Marvel Superheroes and GBAvania this week.
I would have gotten Kirby Wii if its 9.99€.
Kirby should've been the Dream Collection as it never came out in Europe. I would've bought that! As it stands there's nothing too exciting. Some Lego titles (no Undercover?!) and more GBA... They should release Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, that's a GBA title i'd buy instantly!
Lots of temporary discounts. Shame about no discount for Kirby though...that's the one I really wanted.
@Jonny I Know How you Feel i would of bought it otherwise 😒
I've heard great things about the Wii U version of Batman Arkham City so I'll be getting that instead of Kirby as Arkham City is on sale compared with Kirby not on sale.
Also, there don't seem to be any Club Nintendo stars for Wii downloads. And the next wave of amiibo will be released on Friday so they also will be competing for my dosh this week.
I'm suprised that WB and activision just don't permanently drop the price on those games, they've been out long enough.
I was expecting a cash cow of purchase option this week, and wow nothing!
Because of the classic controller support Kirby's Adventure should be completely playable with the gamepad, right?
"it gives European gamers some fun Kirby time while North America looks ahead to Kirby and the Rainbow Curse this week"
Yeah brilliant. So not only do we get stiffed on the release date for Kirby but the 'consolation' is a Wii game (which I was interested in because of the proper Gamepad play) at a very high price. (I'm not allowed to swear on here) you, Nintendo....
I was looking forward to getting Kirby for €10 this week but seeing that it doesn't have the launch discount I may have to think it over.
Wait...one of the DLC tracks is Swivel, from Seiken Densetsu 3?!
That's an instant buy from me. There's something about that track that makes it one of my most fondly remembered RPG pieces of music from the SNES era.
No rush to buy Kirby to lock in the discount this time at least. I prefer to download things when I can comfortably afford to top up my credit rather than feel obliged to download it first week because of the deep discount.
I definitely will download it though as even at £17.99, the actual wii disc is worth nearly double that and I really want to play this. Wish it was £8.99 but the first 3 wii offerings were great and I understand that Nintendo cannot do this offer permanently. I'm happy with that.
What's happened to GB and GBC games on 3DS Virtual Console?
Cannot bring myself to buy GBA games on Wii U. They just don't look or feel right.
Frog's Theme!
Would be nice to have kept the launch discount on Wii, I presumed it would as part of Nintendo dropping the £5 reward scheme in favour of rewarding repeat loyalty and continued buying of their eshop titles. I would have got every single Wii game released if they'd had continued the 50% off if purchased during launch week. At £18 I will seriously consider each title individually. Especially when you can buy brand new copies of Sin and Punishment for £5 still
Castlevania!
And two VC GBA quality third party games on the Wii U in one week? It's a Christmas Miracle.
Harmony of dissonance! Argh damn you Amiibos
The "normal" regular prices on those Angry Bird games are so laugh out loud ridiculous.
No Pokémon Shuffle this week? Hopefully next week then.
No discounts on the upcoming Wii games: one step forward with the first three releases, two steps back now. Oh Nintendo...
And the lack of a discounted Lego City is obviously a Nintendo's fault too, right?
So letdown the 9 quid first week price point won't be continuing...
We knew from the start that the sale was only a launch offer.
What's happened to GB and GBC games on 3DS Virtual Console?
Nintendo hears ya. Nintendo don't care.
Kirby should've been the Dream Collection as it never came out in Europe. I would've bought that!
I have already downloaded the games individually so no point for me. Okay, so I can't play Kirby 64 with Game Pad controls but I can live with that.
And two VC GBA quality third party games on the Wii U in one week?
Any benefits over the SNES version of Super Ghouls n Ghosts? I'd have preferred Capcom release Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival, Final Fight One, Mega Man & Bass or either GBA Breath of Fire before Super Ghouls n Ghosts.
Cannot bring myself to buy GBA games on Wii U. They just don't look or feel right.
They look far better than on 3DS to me. I don't use the TV though, only the Game Pad.
Wait...one of the DLC tracks is Swivel, from Seiken Densetsu 3?! That's an instant buy from me. There's something about that track that makes it one of my most fondly remembered RPG pieces of music from the SNES era.
I'd have preferred Nuclear Fusion. Best music in the game.
Castlevania! I've wanted the physical version for absolutely ages but it is rather hard to come by. I won't get it right away but it's nice to know it's there.
What is the Castlevania price in GBP?
@DESS-M-8
Same. I would have bought every Wii game if they are on sale on their launch week.
Castlevania and SMT IV for me
Typical Nintendo. I was waiting to Download Kirby in the first week and get the half price discount we were mislead into believing would apply to all eight advertised games.
Now I will leave it. I am not desperate to play it and Nintendo has lost a sale. I hope others vote with there wallet and keep their money, that includes the other three games over the next three weeks.
no discount on Kirby for Wii? so I'll pass, as I have it on disc anyway
I'll be picking up Kirby at some point - it was something I wanted but couldn't get on Wii since it went out of stock so quickly in Europe. With no discount now though there's now rush. I'm guess there maybe some kind of Kirby-themed offer later in the year when Rainbow Curse eventually launches anyway.
So many temporary discounts, but most of those games fall down to prices still higher than on phisical shelves...
I guess it's nothing for me this week, even if I would have gladly played some Kirby at a lower price... unluckily for me the only announced Wii title I don't own wasn't in the discounted first releases, but (of course!) it's the first full priced one XD;
SMT IV for me i missed the last opportunity to get it at a discount price
Shame that Kirby isn't on release week discount. I wonder what happened at Nintendo?
Why is the price of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance in dollars in the news article?
The Warner sales prices are cool, but those games should've had a permanent discount already and be now on sale for even lower prices that they are putting those out. Though Lego Marvel Super Heroes is "a bit" tempting at that price.
Kirby's adventure is relatively rare to find in the UK and quite expensive on eBay. Shame its not at discount price.
I'm on the fence for Lego Hobbit, have they released the dlc for the third movie? Or at least announced it?
I did plan on getting Kirby, but if it's not discounted I won't pick it up
@Grumblevolcano I'm playing through Arkham City as we speak,I got it from Amazon a couple of weeks ago for a tenner but just started it last night.I'm enjoying it so far but I must say,after only really playing 1st party and some indie platformers since I got my Wii U,I can really notice the drop in framerate.I've never really concerned myself with things like that before but here it's definitely noticeable and quite jarring to be honest.I've read a few comments before saying that the download version runs smoother so it's probably worth paying the little extra if it does.
I was looking forward to downloading Kirby, never played any Kirby games but his Wii outings really appealed to me and I figured I'd definitely get this at the launch discount for my kids and myself... ah well, maybe they'll do a promo on it when the Wii U game finally releases here
Tougher levels on Super Ghouls and Ghosts?
Surely, you can't be serious
I've still got all my original Castlevania carts, but it's cool having all the Nintendo Castlevanias downloaded on the same system so I'll grab Harmony Of Dissonance and give it another playthrough....it's an excellent game even though the soundtrack is horrible and sounds like something the Sega Master System would pump out.
Really interested in the GBA port of Super Ghouls n Ghosts as I've only played the SNES original and would like to see what these 'arrange' levels are all about.
No interest in Kirby at that price as I have it on disc
Shin Megami Tensei IV sounds great to me =)
The launch discounts for Wii games were limited promotions, of course it's not gonna be 10 right off the bat.
With that said, even though NA is getting Rainbow Curse this week I still hope NA gets Return to Dream Land as well. I'm one of the Kirby fans that didn't like Canvas Curse, so I don't see how I'll enjoy Rainbow Curse either.
@Bass_X0 Any benefits over the SNES version of Super Ghouls n Ghosts? I'd have preferred Capcom release Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival, Final Fight One, Mega Man & Bass or either GBA Breath of Fire before Super Ghouls n Ghosts.
Yeah, the GBA version of Super Ghouls n Ghosts has all new 'arrange' stages apparently so I'm interested to see what those are like. I'd like to see Final Fight One as it's a huge improvement over the SNES port of the original game, but what would be the benefit of the GBA Breath Of Fire games over the SNES versions that are already on VC? And Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on GBA has a couple of nasty game breaking glitches they need to deal with before they put it out there.
Harmony of Dissonance gives me the feeling of "trying too hard to be the next Symphony of the Night". Circle of the Moon is much better in my opinion. By all means, play both though. It's all good. Playing as Maxim is crazy fast and exciting too.
I don't have nor want a 3DS but man that is a bad week.You would have thought with the new console just releasing they would have added a couple of VC titles at least.
Angry Birds Trilogy and Angry Birds Star Wars for 26 euro each (on 3ds)?
They are INSANE.
What is the price of this on smartphone? 2 euro per each?
I know that on Nintendo stuff you have to paid more.
But i guess no more than 10 euro per angry birds game for 3ds.
I would have picked up Kirby instantly, if it had been discounted for the first week. But I think I'll hold off just a little longer.
Will pass on Kirby for £18, if it was £9 I would have definitely gone for it. I reckon I can wait until it goes on sale some time in the future. If all these Wii games were half price first week then Nintendo would make a fortune, they still just don't get it. Give us N64 and GC games on Wii U and GBA and DS games on 3DS!
I really want to play Starwing on my Wii U, I don't care if it used the Super FX chip and won't run, rebuild it from the ground up it's an important part of Nintendo's history!
Like almost everyone else, would have bought Kirby's adventure if it had been a 1st week sale.
I guess it's zilch for me this week as I already picked up SMTIV on sale not too long ago.
Perhaps there shouldn't of been a discount on the Wii titles in the first place because that got people believing quality past generation games are worth 10$.
@Porky What they are worth shouldn't really matter. What should matter is the price that gets Nintendo the most money. If the amount of money they get drops by a huge amount the price is wrong.
@Grumblevolcano Arkham city is a good game, and it immerses you into the movie atmosphere.
Fire emblem wii, when are you coming to eshop?
I have been voting 'Nothing for me this week' for so long, I can't be bothered any more.
I will continue to buy only on disc or cart until a true account based system is introduced, and digital pricing at least matches the physical products.
@unrandomsam If there were no discount for the first 3 games, there would be no problem here.
!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI 4 !!!!!!!!!!!!
Also Castlevania HD
But most of all:
!!!!!!!!! SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI 4 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hhhhaaaaaaaaaaa!
If Nintendo aren't going to do a discount on each new Wii game then im out i can justify £9 not £18.
Kirby, Kirby, Kirby. Even not 10e discount, 19.99 is still cheaper than trying to find it phsyical (and when you do, it's 40e).
Upcoming Sin and Punishment... bought it year ago for 14.90 and still available for that in stores, if you can find it.
I'm waiting for Sin & Punishment 2
Wait, is that a Nier song as DLC for Theatrhythm? That's cool.
@Ootfan98 I am serious....and don't call me Shirley! 😜
Well 20 EUR for Kirby is still a pretty good deal, considering I just bought a used copy on eBay for 30 EUR.
Not much for the 3DS this week. That's alright, I am about to start on Majora's Mask anyway. I am still playing Disney Magical World as well (love that game)! So if there is no great 3DS game for the next few weeks, that's fine by me.
@Porky
Not really. If that was the case I will wait for the sale on those since it's not going anywhere from the eShop. I don't really need DKC, Metroid and Galaxy 2 right now because I have them on discs but that discount made most of us buy it.
Is Shin Megami Tensei IV worth getting? I've only played some of Devil Survivor Overclocked. When I have money to spare, I may get Kirby. Never played that one.
@joey302 classic
Haven't seen any Mario or Zelda (excluding Majora's Mask) in a while now
I like Castlevania and Ghouls and Ghosts but the Wii U VC releases seem to becoming more and more about handheld and mobile type versions of games. You don't buy a Wii U to play handheld games thats what the DS is for, i don't want the handheld version of an arcade classic i want the arcade version to play on a HD TV, that's what home consoles are supposed to be for.
the Wii U VC releases seem to becoming more and more about handheld and mobile type versions of games. You don't buy a Wii U to play handheld games
Aren't most of the GBA games better than most of the SNES and NES games? It doesn't matter to me that the GBA was a handheld, they're still enjoyable games to play on Wii U Game Pad.
i want the arcade version to play on a HD TV, that's what home consoles are supposed to be for.
I agree that arcade games should come to the Wii U VC. But I was disappointed by the choices of games on Wii VC. There should have been more arcade games from the 1990s.
Kirby for me. It's a pity that there's no discount this time but it's still a good price, I've only seen it at 40€ and above.
Somewhat disappointed in no discount for Kirby, but then again, I just bought MM3D and MH4U last week, plus I haven't finished MPT, so I have no shortage of games to be playing and should welcome the brief respite to my wallet.
Actually never completed Lego Hobbit so may DL that (?). Also Kirby (discount ?!) .
The Gamepad was a nice idea and there's nothing wrong with GBA games but there needs to be more Arcade and home console alternatives for the Wii U VC. GBA games are a cute alternative but u can't take the Wii U with you on the bus, they are handheld games made for mobile use that's why there is a 3DS. Taking the VC Arcade and other alternative consoles out of the equation and adding GBA has not improved the VC experience.
I suppose it could be worse than Kirby. It could be Punch-Out or Sin & punishment 2; the two games easily found for <€20 (I look forward to those two months).
That said I've got enough games to get on with so there is no reason for me to buy Kirby yet.
Can't wait to buy all of those new 3DS Virtual console games, oh wait...............
@Grumblevolcano
Arkham City is an absolute steal at that price, especially if you've never played it. The Wii U version comes with free DLC as well (extra skins for playable characters, an extra story mission where you play as Robin, Robin and Nightwing as playable characters with their own missions in the other modes).
Confused as to why everyone was expecting discounts on Wi games, when it was clearly a thing for only the first three games.
@andyg1971 I don't know about making a fortune. They would have to sell twice as many games the first week just to make the same amount of money. The discount is obviously better for us but that's not exactly a recipe for making a ton of money.
Glad to see more GBA Castlevania games! Makes me want to dust off my Gameboy Micro.
You know Warner, you've discounted Lego Batman 2 on 360 for as low as £3.70 on more then one occasion. Just throwing that out there....
Those Angry Birds "discounts" tho...
@NoEasyBuckets Yeah but each of these games all made money for Nintendo on the Wii upon their initial release, any money they make now is like free money. Keeping them at £9 rewards those few of us who invested in a Wii U.
Why are ALL of the Lego games are on sale regularly except for City Undercover?? It costs 60 euros in the eShop since it's release, nearly two years ago. Why? The same goes for Scribblenauts Unlimited btw.
Guessing the lack of Lego City discount is because Nintendo publish that one.
@BensonUii Then these releases are obviously not targeted at you. You double dipped. People who missed out will buy the Wii titles at the recommended price when available and enough interest.
I was already on board with Frog's Theme and Vamo'alla Flamenco, but Megalomania? From Live A Live? Excitement cannot be contained well enough.
The 3 week sale ended after 3 weeks? No, say it isn't so!!
Don't know why people are surprised by this.
Even at this price point, you still save money off Kirby through many retailers and (again) Nintendo doesn't manage eShop pricing, so blame Activision for Angry Birds.
Those € sale prices are completely HORRENDOUS!!! And Wii title's back up to €20 each? eh, no thank.
@Ootfan98 lol couldn't resist bro!
Nobody buy Kirby at this price! Revolt!
@PinkSpider my local cex has 8 copies of rainbow curse, at £8 , so keep looking man! Don't be suckered into paying the discount free dl price!
Harmony of Dissonance!!! ♥
@ULTRA-64 i meant kirbys adventure on Wii mate
@shigulicious raises fist
Every time I see the Angry Birds games' prices, it really makes me want to cry.
@Game-Over I agree 300%!!! Oh my lord what the vc service could n should be!!!! Wasted opportunity!!
@PinkSpider so did I ....my mistake with the title, the new one is obviously not out yet
what would be the benefit of the GBA Breath Of Fire games over the SNES versions that are already on VC?
The menus look a lot better and modern over the originals, but thats just cosmetic. Plus you gain double EXP in the GBA versions which means less grinding. SNES BoF1 feels far too dated for me personally.
And Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on GBA has a couple of nasty game breaking glitches they need to deal with before they put it out there.
I doubt they would fix the glitch. VC games tend to be ported exactly, glitches and all. I would still download it though.
@NodesforNoids it wasn't three weeks though was it as they only released 2 games then had a 2 week break
Is Lego game worth to buying? (any?)
@PinkSpider scrap everything I've said, I'm an idiot!! Was typing walking back from work in a mood, facts now checked.....I was wrong about everything nearly- if I can buy what I said at the price I said- then I will buy it and mail it to you
@ULTRA-64 I'll hold you to that lol
Discounts? Jesus, these should be normal prices. You can get Batman for £5. You even get a nice box. Or buy it for PC... and it will actually play as it should; not like a bad port
Shame Kirby isn't getting the same discounts the other Wii games got. I definitely would get it for £9, but £18 is a bit expensive for what it is.
If there's one thing I know, if you're trying to choose between some game and SMTIV (or some other Atlus game), choose the other game. The Atlus game will be on sale again at least 5 more times throughout the year
Does anyone know if Kirby on the Wii used a classic controller?
@Ootfan98 It doesn't.
@ToxieDogg
I have it on my GBA SP! The other stages are from the Genesis version I believe. I guess not this what the wiki says...
The Game Boy Advance version, released simply as Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts in North America and Europe and as Chōmakaimura R in Japan, features an "Arrange Mode" that enables the player to choose from redesigned levels and bosses based on the original Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, depending on their success in keeping the bronze armor, or a higher difficulty tier of the standard levels set upon keeping the golden armor. Unlike the Normal Mode, in Arrange the Goddess' Bracelet is already accessible during the first playthrough. Unlike the Capcom Generations/Classics Collection ports, the Game Boy Advance port retains the slowdown of the original Super NES version, even in the redesigned levels.
Well, if you don't have the Kirby game, you should...and still probably cheaper than ebay and Amazon.
@Game-Over
You're not wrong there, I'm getting a little miffed at the volume of handheld releases over Wii U.
C'mon Nintendo, sort out content for the Wii U and just buy Capcom, then release Tatsunoko vs Capcom and do a sequal and remake Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts please!
Shin Megami Tensei 4.. sale.. at last, i just hope i have cash before that runs out.
I know it's been said before, but the prices of some of these games are insane. Angry Birds for £20? ...and that's on special offer(!) I would like to know how many copies they've sold. Perhaps if it were in the 'Under £3' section on the eShop...
@Grumblevolcano thanks, was hoping to play a Wii game with gamepad controls
The VC already has issues and then they have to pile on over pricing them. No thanks!
SonsofBelichick, Joey302...Yeah every week i'm hoping that something might change but it doesn't and there's no real change in sight. The NES, SNES and GBA are solid consoles with good games but that can't be it can it , surely something else needs to be added. I get the feeling though by what's being released for download that if they do actually add another console to the VC it will probably be another handheld i'm thinking original Gameboy, it really would not surprise me. Were probably more likely to see Gameboy then Gamecube.
Castlevania for me this week
lets hope Aria of sorrow isn't too far off
3DS line-up....say whaaaaaa?
all rubbish come on give us something good next week
@Grumblevolcano Yep, I got Batman Arkham City, one of the best Wii U titles and much better than Batman Arkham Origins.
It's so disappointing to see Wii titles without launch discount. I'll pass.
Another week without N64 games Booo.
will be getting kirby regardless of no discount. The physical copy is impossible to get in NZ. It will be the same with pandora's tower (which still retails at over $100 in physical form). I think $34 is a minute price to pay for either.
The launch discounts were to encourage you to buy games you already own again. The same number of people do not own kirby, pandora and sin so they can offer them at full and people will still buy.
NieR music in Theatrhythm?? Sign me up!
Gee thanks for the free viruses mate
Always love Konami and Capcom releasing virtual console games.....but come on already! MAKE WITH THE ARCADE CONVERSIONS!
