Sonic Runners

Not so long ago there were rumours circulating of a new game in the works - Sonic Runners. As a number of fans were likely feeling burned by Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric at the time, it was understandable to be cautious; we will give some kudos to Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal on 3DS for being a more tolerable release, though.

We suspected that this could be a smart device project at the time, and sadly for those of you that will have been looking out for more information on Runners that is the case. Sega producer Takashi Iizuka presented the game, briefly, at the company's recent event at Tokyo Joypolis; the only details provided were the name, a 2015 release confirmation and a promise of more information in January.

Sega's released a number of Sonic releases - old and new - on smart device platforms, so this is no real surprise. For fans of the Blue Blur keen to see what's next after the disappointment of Sonic Boom, the wait will go on; we're yet to see if Sonic Team is working on a console game, for example, as the Boom spin-offs were developed by Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games.

We're not without ammunition in hoping that whatever comes next will hit Wii U, meanwhile. A marketing poster in early 2014 from the Nuremberg International Toy Fair suggested that a TBC Sonic Game is headed to Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One in 2015.

We shall see, though we now know that Runners will be dashing away from consoles.
