Shantae And The Pirate's Curse arrived on 3DS in North America in late October, though it's been delayed into 2015 in Europe. That delay announcement also indicated that the Wii U version will hit the EU alongside the portable original, but gamers in North America will have that HD option a little sooner.
In fact, it's down as a Christmas Day arrival, with the standard download update day falling on 25th December. It'll cost $19.99 just like the 3DS version, and the following feature list is pitched for the home console download.
HD character portraits by Mega Man developer IntiCreates!
Off-TV play
Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller support
Unlockable Pirate-Mode
Multiple endings
Epic original soundtrack by Jake “Virt” Kaufman
We're big fans of the 3DS release, awarding it 9/10 in our review. Have you been holding off to see those lovely pixels on the big screen through the Wii U, and are any of you in North America planning to jump in on Christmas Day? Let us know.

YES! I held off on the 3DS version to play it in HD. Really happy I did now.
I think I rather have this on my 3ds just like Shovel Knight. It would get more use out of me.
Can't wait to play it this Christmas! USA!
I got it for my 3DS as they said this will end 1 trilogy and Half-Genie Hero will start a new one. I have the complete trilogy on my 3DS lol.
Also isn't today the last day to back HGH?
Very good news for US, I just really hope the eshop doesn't end up like last year.
I might actually be forced to pick up the WiiU version, since the shoulder buttons on my 3DS simply won't work anymore... which sucks since I wanted every possible Shantae game on it... waa!
Great news. This should be a Christmas day buy for me then.
Might be tempted to pick this up if I can get a discount for already owning it on 3DS. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it. Best Metroid-style game I've played in years, and easily the best of the Shantae games.
Man it looks like a fantastic game but $20 is a bit iffy for me. If it was $10 I would snap it up in an instant!
Finally!!
I'll buy it, but probably not Christmas Day. I'll have my hands full already.
Now, which one to buy first...For some reason, I never had the money to buy Shovel Knight, so should I pick up that or Shantae?
My body is HD ready this time!!
@DefHalan really? I thought they were gonna end this at half-genie hero?
@Captain_Toad Well I heard that the first 3 games were going to be their own trilogy, and HGH would be self-contained (you wouldn't need to play any of the first 3 to understand HGH) I just figured they were hoping to continue the series after HGH.
I "bought" this for 3ds and I'm going to get this as well. I loves me some Wayforward.
Dang this makes me want Azure Striker Gunvolt in HD...
Maybe i'll get it.
Never finished the DSiWare one though. This one seems better than that one.
Well crap. Could have sworn I read elsewhere that the WiiU would be the same as the 3DS version, like how Mighty Switch Force 2 was ported to the WiiU, no HD enhancements. So I picked it up for the 3DS. And of course, it's Shantae, so I'll double dip with no discount
@Tops Totally loved it on 3DS, and btw, Pirate Mode is unlocked after you beat it once, and means you start the game with all of Risky's pirate weapons from the beginning, rather than finding them in each labyrinth ("Den of Evil" in this game).
Gotta wait for next year, at least you get the Wii U version before 2015 (3DS version hasn't arrived yet either, but that's not the version I'm waiting for).
I don't even care that it comes late now that I've got Smash Bros...
They have to learn what cross buy is at Nintendo. I don't know which version I would like more and I may end up buying neither.
Also what's the deal recently with PAL versions? Are we back in the 90's or something?
For Shantea, it's the Rating Boards that are holding us back. For Shovel Knight, it was Translation. For a lot of other things, it's "Oh, Europe, that old thing. Why do we bother releasing anything over there anyway?"
@belmont couldn't agree more. For the same reason i still haven't bought shovel knight of msf2. The discount doesn't mean much, as i am not made out of money.
Gon' get dis! ... when it comes to Europe.
Been waiting for this. I still find the price somewhat appalling, but this purchase should get me one more coupon from the deluxe digital promotion before its gone forever.
PAL versions..? Try mandatory subtitles in many more languages, and voice acting.
From a smaller company that doesn't have it's own resources to properly translate.
Or how about the fact that not all PAL releases (not even all European releases) use the same ratings board. Without a rating, they can't sell the game.
It's not North America's fault for having a larger audience and a streamlined ratings board.
This is fantastic news. I transferred all my old games onto my wife and I's iPad last night and saw I had Shantae: Riskys Revenge on there. Think I will go back through and play it before I pick up the new game on the Wii U.
Already got it on 3DS. No need for Shantae on Wii U until Half-Genie Hero.
Between the Sunstone comic on Christmas Eve and Shantae on Christmas Day. This should be a good holiday.
Have the 1st on 3ds VC, don't have the 2nd one, but i really do want to complete this trilogy
@MixMasterMudkip
Yeah, same here. And I'm glad I didn't have to wait too long to get the version I thought would be better: Sorry 3D fans, HD for life! (And 3D kind of hurts my eyes, lol).
Awesome. I put off getting the 3DS version for this one. Should be fun!
