WayForward's Shantae And The Pirate's Curse is already out in North America on the 3DS eShop, and we think it's fantastic, but it's been a frustrating wait for localisation in PAL countries. Unfortunately, it's been confirmed that the previous goal to get the 2D action adventure game out this year in the region has been missed.
WayForward shared the sad news in a tweet, confirming that it's now due in Europe in late January / early February next year.
On the plus side, those waiting for the Wii U eShop version can peg that window for the home console iteration, too. It uses the same pixel-based assets as the portable option, but could be tempting to those that'd rather settle down and play on a big screen.
A little longer before European 3DS owners can jump in, meanwhile — good things come to those who wait.

Delays everywhere in Europe. I'm getting a US console next gen.
Wasn't this the game I kickstarted last year, or was it 1/2 Genie?
@StarDust4Ever The game we Kickstarted is 1/2 Genie Hero, which is the 4th installment. It's confusing since the Kickstarted ended so long before this game finally came out, but Pirate's Curse has been in development since Risky's Revenge came out and was originally only going to be on 3DS. The WiiU version was added in during the Kickstarter cuz I guess they were having fun with it. Having played almost all of the game on 3DS up to the final boss I'd have to say this might be the best Shantae game yet, and the graphics look great in 3D. I almost enjoy the art style of this game (and Risky's Revenge) better than the 1/2 Genie Hero art, but we'll see.
Too busy playing Smash at the moment, so the delay is a good thing.
@BensonUii
not on virtual console
the US gets a lot of delays on that
Wow I am so so shocked~ /s
They also tweeted yesterday that the Wii U version may still hit NA eShop this month.
well as long as they keep this release window,
This delay must be a result of that Pirate's Curse that the title is referring to. =P
This is one of the reasons why I bought an American 3DS. All we ever do in Australia is wait and wait. Then if we are lucky, we may just get the game... at probably double the price.
When I go to America, I usually stock up on eShop point cards for this very reason.
@BensonUii
Well, considering how the company is an American company, it doesn't have to worry about localizing it to the region and stuff like that so that's probably why there are delays for Europe, Shovel Knight was the same thing
Is the Wii U version due at that time in NA, the EU or both? I read the article 3 times but it didnt really say. Never played any of the handheld games but they always looked fun, would probably get it on Wii U.
@bofis Yeah I got the titles mixed up. I really wish the eShop had cross buy because lots of games and VC titles I've forked over on both platforms. I've already got Pirate's curse, Risky's Revenge (DSi), and Shantae (GBC VC) on 3DS but I selected Wii-U option for the 1/2 Genie Hero. I may double dip when it comes out on Wii-U, I dunno.
Are you kidding me?! You already delayed the game so many times, and you're STILL adding more wait time?! What the hell are you messing around with, WayForward???
I can wait, a bunch of other games is taking up my time now anyway.
@Kaze_Memaryu They are relaying what the ratings board told them, so it's obviously out of their hands at this point.
I can wait. Have about 200 games I still have to even open.
I'm banning myself from buying any games until March/April next year.
Hi my name is RLG and I think I have an addiction to buying video games.
Was fully expecting this. *shrugs
I can't be bothered to be mad at delays. This is Europe, it happens (regularly), deal with it. As long as the localisation is fine and there's no added bugs or the cost rises disproportionally or whatever, I can live with that. Besides, my backlog could last me the next five years.
A Nintendo game delayed in Europe? Get outta here!
European developers usually try and release their games worldwide simultaneously. Take Bertil Horeberg, currently developing Gunman Clive 2; he's not submitting the game to Nintendo until he has ratings back from America, Europe, and Australia. He's a one-man development team. Wayforward are a bigger developer, but clearly only care about their American fans.
I always find it funny that on PC the release of games is happening on the same date.
It really sucks that all console games have regional release dates.
By the sound of things it's not WayForward's fault. I'm sure they wanna get the game out more than anyone. Just a little more time to wait. I'm not too bothered because there are so many Nintendo games to get right now.
@RainbowGazelle I've Always wondered why devs don't do that. When a game come out in in the states and delayed in Europe, we see the reviews good or bad and then momentum in Europe disappears, doesn't sell and devs then say Europe no like Nintendo.
Just don't talk about your game until nearly finished and all ratings are past then release world wide day one.
It's pretty simple
@NoEasyBuckets angry mumble
... I guess it wasn't meant to be. That means no more games for me this year.
Oh well, thanks for the hint, mate!
@readyletsgo Exactly! I know that the American rating is cheaper and quicker to get a rating from, so if a developer really needed money quickly because they were in debt, I would be okay with them releasing in the US first, but I don't think Wayforward comes into this category.
@rjejr According to their twitter, they have their "fingers crossed" for a 2014 release on Wii U in the Americas. Would be a fine addition indeed to my already packed gaming holidays.
@ricklongo
I have my fingers crossed too so I can get it and still receive credit for the DDP.
If that does not happen I will get the 3DS version to have the original trilogy in the same system. I just need to buy all three for that, though
@ricklongo - Thanks. I'm not on twitter much, and I don't think my 6 followers mind.
Just watched the Wii U trailer on Youtube and it looks good to me. Though when reviews say its difficult I always get a tad hesitant towards buying.
Nooo, now I won't get my 10% bonus points for buying this. Wii U version, that is the one I'm waiting for.
