Shovel Knight has been available for a good while now, yet those still digging in will have noticed that it's more than a simple A to B platformer. With in game currency, items and upgrades to manage it has its own levels of complexity, making it possible for players to inadvertently bypass important features.
A recent video from Nintendo UK aims to help you out, as Yacht Club Games' Sean Velasco outlines five key tips for getting the most out of the game and giving yourself the best possible chance.
We're big fans of this one on both Wii U and 3DS; let us know whether these tips are helpful, or if you're smart enough to have it all figured out already.

I actually found Shovel Knight to be somewhat easy most of the time, and too short for its price tag. But the video is a good start for people who have trouble digging some graves, though it's nothing you wouldn't know if you were to read the manual.
@Kaze
I agree, though the difficulty did pick up towards the end. I loved the 2nd to last fight (I think) against all of the bosses.
If you didn't know the first tip, the first level would seem impossible. =P
I'm really loving shovel knight, not just a nostalgia trip but a great game, tight controls, wonderful "8-bit style" art (not really 8-bit of course). And the music.....oh my word the music.
Love the game. I'm on my 2nd play through (Much harder) since the 1st was kinda easy. Now with most the relics and shovel upgrades out of the way, I can get that fancy gold Armor.
It's pretty close to 8-bit. Did you read the article "we broke the NES"
http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/DavidDAngelo/20140625/219383/Breaking_the_NES_for_Shovel_Knight.php
Besides the Parallax Scrolling and 3 additional colors, it's close to what the NES could deliver.
Funny, I just finished this game two nights ago. Extremely fun. Would love to see more in the same style.
It drives me crazy when people label this game as easy or short. That instantly tells me you didn't play NG+. The "normal" mode is kind of like a tutorial. NG+ is where the rubber meets the road and the game's brilliant design and challenge become apparent.
Such a great game if you haven't played it yet then what are you waiting for?
@Dpishere I am waiting for a sale. A lot of people seem to be saying it is pretty short.
@futurepixels Me too, short games equals wait for sale...
And certainly with that pricetag. With my limited time for games, I'll only play it once, so...
@futurepixels If you are just interested in playing straight through the story then it will take about 4 hours but if you are a completions like me and want to play the new game plus mode then it easily lasted 20 hours for me, and once they release the free dlc I will surely get sucked into playing it again. Not complaining about value for my dollar one bit!
So many people on a site about Nintendo complaining about the price tag. 0o I played through shorter Nintendo games that were 40-60 bucks. This game is well wort its money.
15 € for at least 4h is too much? Really?
I'd obviously be happier if it was cheaper but I believe it's a fair price, specially taking into account how good the game is.
Buy it and find out yourselves.
Every time I consider buying shovel knight I find myself unable to decide between 3DS and WiiU. SO instead I play something else.
@Kaze_Memaryu I found it easy until I started smashing the checkpoints to earn more money and then when I died at the end of the level I was respawned at the very start.
In short I love how you can make this game harder if you choose. It's very easy if you use all checkpoints.
Short or not, this game is worth every penny. NG+, unlockable alt armors, and achievements give the game legs. Along with the basic fact that it is a blast to play. Oh, and playing around with all of those cheat codes. Just buy it, please. The world needs Shovel Knight 2.
@OneBagTravel That's quite true. The potential for self-imposed challenges is great.
How long did you all need to finish Mario World 3D??? For me it was 8 hours. So if you count they way some people count it was waaaaaaaaaaaaayy to expencive.
I'm stuck on Mole Knight.
@chiptoon I bought it on american 3ds on release and recently picked up the pal wii u version and I have to say Wii U is the way to go if deciding between the two, you can really appreciate the art design on the bigger screen and with a proper stick it controls better too. Only disadvantage is obviously the 3d & portability but I turn off the 3d most of the time after a while.
@mozie - thanks for the advice! Portability is a big factor for me, but if the controls are better on WiiU then theres no contest.
@Kaze_Memaryu Agree with you. I finished it in 8-10 hours. Good game overall but I did not understand why people like it that much. This game is an improved version of Castlevanic in NES, but it is overall quite a simple, non-complex game.
