The opening cinematic to a new game is something that can give gamers the butterflies, and the crème de la crème of anticipated intros has finally been revealed by Nintendo — via IGN. The new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U opening movie, as expected, has us greeted by a host of Nintendo all-stars showing off their moves.
However, it has caused quite a whirlwind of discussion since its release, due to some hoping for a more breathtaking piece of footage — much like that of Melee's opening sequence. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's intro consists of pre-existing cut scenes that Nintendo has released throughout the year, along with a combination of quirky gameplay footage. Some may regard it as lazy, but nevertheless it still gets you amped for arguably Nintendo's biggest game release of the year.
Take a look at the video below and let us know if you're delighted, satisfied, or feel the new Smash Bros. should have more oomph to its opening cinematic.

Let the Melee fans attack
Grabs Popcorn
Very cool, but the Brawl cinematic was way better. It had superior music, and seemed far more professional. This one is good, but yes, a little lazy.
I'm not disappointed by the fact that this opening uses cutscenes from character reveal trailers and all that. I'm just disappointed that the only times Yoshi appears is when he gets beaten up!
...but that's just because I'm a big Yoshi fan, I guess.
Not as good as the others but happy there's one anyway. 3DS oddly removed any instead having a how to play video which people should be saying is "lazy"
Nope! not looking, i want this to be fresh when i play the game for the very first time.
Resist the urge people, imagine how much better it will be when you can press start and begin the game after the opening scene. Its the little things....
@ichiban
You will be underwhelmed
Personally, i wanted a whole new opening, but there was just so much effort put into the character reveal trailers, i thought it was just fair to put them into the opening, and besides, the smash bros 4 theme is so damn awsome ^^
I love that bit where DK was kidnapping Kirby.
Still not as good as Melee's opening which was just so epic.
@Ichiban - I don't think I can wait another month or 2 but Im not watching it for the first time on my 7" tablet. I'll wait for it to show up on the eShop.
Does this mean all those people who run the tech sites will be counting pixels now to tell us if its 720p or 1080p?
Wait. Near the end of the video, there's a bit with two Mega Mans (Mega Men?) and the Yellow Devil. The red Mega Man puts out the leaf shield but the leaves are red with yellow spots, and the blue Mega Man has this bird-looking thing with Mega Man's helmet. Are those alternate moves?
@CharleSketch Yep, they're alternate moves. Plant Barrier (the red/yellow leaves) and Beat (the bird).
@rjejr Nintendo already confirmed it's 1080p
Also, they used in game footage in the Melee intro.
I liked it
@Yosher Figures. I haven't delved too much on the alternate moves. Don't see much point to them when I can't even use them online.
Palutena particularly, I can barely see any point to it. I want to use her on 1v1, but her default moveset is awful and there's no way to use an alternate one.
With all of the hype from the prerelease photos, etc. it seems we have nowhere to go but disappointed. Just like brawl. Not trying to be a downer but totally saw it coming.
Comparing it to past intros, it's not all that. On its own, though, it's pretty nice.
It's better than the 3DS opening cuts-- oh wait, that's right, there wasn't one...
I love the extended look at the third party characters towards the end. Very classy move by Nintendo.
@TheItalianBaptist yeah tbh i feel that way too
i LOVED the character reveals and the awesome animations for those, wish they could have added more of that. i mean seriously you spend your whole cinematic sequence budget on PR and then drop the ball on the opening.... SMH
I give it an 8/10 for an opening. Not melee, but far superior to brawl's opening and about on par with the ssb64's opening.
I think enough work has been done on this game already. Take it for what it is - A trailer that showcases the fighters and their skills.
It feels lazy, but I like it. The game is awesome anyway...
Wouldn't call it lazy but I liked Brawls better and Melee's is still the best. A badass pre-rendered CG wins every time. Too bad
The Subspace Emissary may have been a subpar platformer, but the cutscenes and Brawl's theme made the game feel so epic. This, not so much. It's a better game but I do miss the atmosphere.
We need Snake.
The only i hate about this, people are going to compare this to melee's opening .Okay Melee's was amazing, you can stop repeatedly saying it.
@rjejr It's 1080p. On YouTube, you can watch the gameplay in the 1080p direct feeds from GameXplain (and set the setting to 1080p), where it's clear that it's 1080p. For a game like SSB, the gameplay will actually gain something from the 1080p (such as in the 4+ player modes). For games like MK8, the gameplay works extremely well in motion at 720p, IMO.
To those who complain about the opening cinematic, do you take into account that you get a "movies" section in SSB U as well?
It's all right. I just think the main theme of this game is a bit underwhelming, especially after coming from the ridiculously epic Brawl theme. The Brawl opening was, like this one, a bunch of SSE cutscenes (in the new one's case, character trailers) with some gameplay footage, but it was still pretty good mainly because the theme song made everything look epic. And this theme song for me it's just... OK.
Melee's is still the best for me, that's a awesome opening.
All aboard the hype 🚄
If it was going to be up to par with melee, they would've made a much bigger buzz about it and showed it during E3 or something. I was completely expecting this, as awesome as a new cinematic opening might have been
@Ichiban: I'm not going to look either! It's something I want to save for the first time that I actually play the game!
It's no Melee, but it's definitely better than 64's. It even blows away Brawl's opening, in my opinion.
Meh. Lazy, yes.
Glad I saw it so I wouldn't had been disappointed when I saw it when the game releases.
The opening cutscene from Brawl always annoyed me, because it was another thing to load and click through. Once I was to the 500th or more time loading it up, that got a bit old. Maybe there was an option to turn it off in the settings and I just never found it.
Definitely not watching it until I get the game, but I am a little disappointed from the sound of it. Ah well, it's not like this is going to make the game worse or anything, but an amazing Intro could have made it just a little more epic!
Yet another SSB4 disappointment here...
I wonder if they blew the animation budget for those fancy reveal trailers.
Perhaps it isnt as surprising because we already saw the clips before.
I think also the theme used here doesnt generates hype...
My hype train for this game is at full throttle right now! I've done nothing but fight online on my 3DS all day
Honestly a bit underwhelming. These are just clips of the character unveiling smashed together. They should've made an original clip instead of smashing existing clips together.
But again, people are going to skip it entirely after the first day anyways SO.... but still this is one of their biggest franchise.
I'm waiting for the day I get the game to see it. I've spoiled myself quite enough!
I'm hearing it's just full of recycled clips and gameplay. Honestly, with all of the work and effort they already put in (especially with character trailers), I don't mind. I don't think I'd call it "lazy".
Absolutely love it! But I am not surprised that people on the Internet are complaining about it, that's what happens. Can't Wait
Cool cinematic, can't wait to actually play the game.
It was meh but whatever, the game itself looks to be incredible!
I'm a little disappointed that the 3DS version doesn't have an opening cutscene.
It's so bad that it almost looks fake.
There's a sloppy montage segment of every other smash brothers, and with the BADLY compiled art styles, it just looks like an MEP better pieced together, by any, "wanna-be" editors on youtube.
Appalling stuff Nintendo.
This better just be a template, because for one of the most anticipated sequals this generation, it's just awful.
I really don't get why they can't do another unique opening movie like Smash 64 and especially Melee, that's what made them so much more special and awesome.
Also, does anyone else miss the announcer saying the game's title at the end of the opening? It was that tiny extra oomph Smash 64 and Melee did that made me that much more pumped to play the game, even to this day.
As some have said, the budget was probably blown, & this had to be unintended extra money spent, or @ least, & more likely, the budget ceiling for the game was getting closer around the time when this (video) was being made, or planned.
Yeah, not as great as Melee's, but still great nonetheless. Also, as some have said, we have seen a lot of what this footage would otherwise reveal, so that contributes to the less-than-stellar perspective. Still great, & yes, Melee also used in-game footage.
I'm hoping to get this for (this) Christmas.
The opening cinematic is normally skipped immediately by me (Unless it is an RPG but then usually I end up having to watch it twice).
This is the one piece of information about the game that I'm saving until it's released. I've got to have something exciting for on the day!
@AVahne Kept you waiting, huh?
You'll never see him again.
Game is set to be something big, with all the work they've done to it. Who cares about intros? I hope that's not the.main reason people buy games, nowadays. Mind you, with all these wannabemovie games around, lately...
Why everyone so surprised the opening is underwhelming? XP
If I remember well, when Sakurai explained the lack of a sequel to the Subspace mode he clearly stated a matter was that he believes cinematics can surprise the player only once and all the hard work making them back with Brawl felt wasted when most people saw the videos for the first time online with youtube&co. instead than seeing them by playing the game.
With the main man behind the game thinking this there is really no surprise the opening cinematic for the game is nothing extreme ^_^;
Yes, This intro is some lazy, many "gaming scenes inside" and very low of "original" scenes, of course, almost all of original scenes are of the "new challengers videos", but for veterans, almost only "gaming scenes". In my opinion, some elements of the first video showns in the E3 could fit very good for this intro and with some good cut scenes of the "new challengers intros", and if they could have made some other unique scenes, much better, but well.
p.d: And one thing more, when will return the classic scream: "Super Smash Botherssss!!!"?, XD
It doesn't come together very well. Ah well, not a big deal.
I love this intro so much :3
Had it not been for the last half, I'd say my main (Peach) got shafted. But even if she hadn't been featured I wouldn't cry. This gets me so pumped for the Wii U game! I DO prefer Brawl's main theme, but this new theme is still every bit hummable to me.
Wh-what's this?! A positive opinion? I'm a heretic!
@Yosher Your avatar is synonymous with you, Yosher. To this day I find it cute. Please don't change it... unless the reason is colossally important.
This intro is more befitting the tone of SSB. Either way, it won't make the game any more or less fun.
No miis.
Bah, I hate when game openings use gameplay material to save effort instead of making a full cinematic (or at least unique) opening.
Besides that, all Smash openings do the same mistake: they try to be epic, but lack the POWER OF ROCK to really come off as such. And this one has the most unimpressive opening song of all - it's yet another version of the Unite leitmotif. As if the OST for SSB3D wasn't already infested with it.
Soooo... no, I'm not impressed in the slightest. I really expected more than what fan could've cut together in his free time. But even then, the opening doesn't have an impact on the game itself. Still, when looking at the effort behind many other openings, this a thorough disappointment.
Ilike it. It has characters, final smashes... what more can we need? We already know what the game is about anyway? The actual took two years of HYYYYYYYPE!!!!!!!!!!!!
As someone who just watched the new one and (after reading some of the comments) the melee one for the first time (yeah I skipped the gamecube back in the days because reasons) I have to say: You guys are really letting nostalgia cloud your judgement
Not to say the Melee opening isn't great but personally I like the new one way more. The new theme with the gituar break alone makes it more epic for me.
Looks OK.
man...Melee/64's intro actually synergized with the background music/sfx. This is literally haphazardly thrown together random image over their smash four theme.
LOVE IT! Well psyched for this game.
Is that Kirby DK is carrying at the end there? Cute...
This is just a bunch of stock footage barely in the rhythm of the song. The previous intros were so much better.
Not as ambitious as the Brawl intro, or as heart-string-tugging as the Melee intro, but it sets a very nice tone for the game.
I don't care for the intros, I watch them once and that's it.

I think it's unfair that both Melee and Brawl used a real orchestra for the opening cutscene but this one doesn't. This amazing theme deserves an orchestra
Brawl and Melee's was much better imo.
Wow, so people's hype is going down because of an intro? It doesn't affect the game at all. And Melee's intro was from E3 build. Brawl's was mostly from Subspace Emissary cut scenes, revealing some spoilers in the game. The Super Smash Bros. for Wii U intro is not that bad, to be honest, but like I've said, it doesn't increase or decrease the fun of the game.
I thought it was slick, don't see why people are upset.
@jariw @Dipper723 - I know the vid is in 1080p and I know the Wii U outputs in 1080p but I can almost guarantee there will still be those websites - Digital Foundry might be one - that will work there magic and still report their results anyway, no matter what Nitneod says. And that was all I said:
"Does this mean all those people who run the tech sites will be counting pixels now to tell us if its 720p or 1080p?"
I'll be shocked if within a week or 2 after release there aren't technical articles about it.
No love for Yoshi in that video. Melee and Brawl have better intros but it is still good.
Also, I take it that Ness, Bowers Jr, Jigglepuff, GanonDorf, Lucina will be playable from the start? Did not see other hidden characters like Mr Game & Watch and Falco on there. So I'm just assuming.
Well anyway
Everyone complains about the intro.
>Press Start Button
Problem solved.
Oh remember Melee intro wasn't a reveal trailer. The intro was just shown at E3 before the game came out. Simple as that.
"arguably Nintendo's biggest game release of the year", it's no bigger than, say, MK8. Anyway, I liked the cinematic, and I haven't seen previous ones either.
I certainly wouldn't have minded seeing something with a bit more to it, but this is still more than good enough for me.
Mewtwo, the epic return of stage builder and, 8 man smash....not even concerned about a cinematic at this point....
It's pretty good!
People keep saying that this was lazy and used old material. But think about it. Melee wasn't preceded by a series of character reveals like this or Brawl. We are actually getting more of an intro, more of a roster, more players, more everything.
Feels lazy a bit but it's really... well.. hypey!
People need to chill, this is better than Brawl's.
Who honestly expects something to be better than Melee's opening anyway?
@Ichiban Now I wish I checked the comment section before I watched the video... >_< Oh well. Next Smash game I guess.
Anyone else notice Shadow?
Nintendo produces one...two...ELEVEN! Eleven extremely well-made character reveal trailers and people still want to complain that this opening cinematic is lazy. I think those people are just acting spoiled. This opening is very good. No original cinematic like Melee? Too bad. Suck it up and move on. You can't expect Nintendo to bend over their backs for you every time with this kind of thing. Making just one of these has to be very expensive. If Brawl's intro was fine you shouldn't be complaining about a new and arguably better version of it.
So basically... Meh?
Melee still has the best intro!
Its good. it's Interesting just how the melee intro actually has the figurines that look like amiibo and brawl has a better intro music..
@MagicEmperor Haha don't worry, I won't change that anytime soon.
