With the portable entry now here, attention inevitably turns to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with Masahiro Sakurai no doubt preparing to reveal more about the HD entry ahead of its Winter release.
A key feature of the home console version, of course, will be its support for amiibo figurines. We've seen plenty of footage in terms of how these will work, primarily from E3, and now Sakurai-san has used his latest Miiverse Pic of the Day to show off some of the interface for amiibo, while also revealing a minor benefit of connecting a figurine.
Pic of the day. For the first time ever in the Super Smash Bros. series, you can play with a collection of real-life trophies in the form of amiibo. Simply touch them on this part of the GamePad. This particular screen is dedicated to activating amiibo, but you can also tap your amiibo on the GamePad at the character-selection screen to let that character join the battle.
Once you do, the trophy of your amiibo character transforms into a Figure Player (FP)!! FPs fight and develop on their own.
Are you excited about amiibo in the Wii U version, or more concerned with whether an update will eventually make the figures compatible with the 3DS iteration in 2015? Let us know in the comments below.

I want a Duck Hunt Amiibo :<
Hype! amiibo will be downright awesome. To all the haters, its not going to be anything that hurts gameplay, just a cool extra. So chill. Also, I'm so excited for the definitive edition of Smash this holiday! The 3DS version is nice but its going to be so lame compared to the Wii U version! =D
Still waiting for them to actually give us information on what they do outside of smash. No money for Ninty until this happens.
Still no release date, I'm starting to doubt the November 21st rumour posed by several shops. Possibly January?
As for Amiibo functionality, I want to know about the use outside of Smash.
Getting Mario, Link and DK first as I can also use them on MK8. Maybe Peach and Yoshi too for the upcoming Mario Party 10 and Wooly World.
@Grumblevolcano
It says Holiday/winter 2014 so I don't think it will be later than December.
They need a release date. My son has £20 burning a hole in his pocket this weekend but unfortunately skylanders is out on Friday so that'll disappear there, it would have gone Amiibo's way if they'd pull their finger out
Hoping for a Captain Falcon Amiibo down the line.
I hope there is gonna be wario too. But im gonna get link and donkey kong first :3
bankrupt is coming...
I'm excited for amiibo and I'm loving smash. But I probably will not use them together.
I'm intent on buying them all but my wife is not keen on the idea. Apparently I shouldn't "play" with "toys" and that she would "divorce" me if I bought them all. Either way I have to get Link so she'll have to just "deal" with it.
Still waiting to find out what Amiibo's actually do in other games. The Smash Bros use seems pointless.
We need more info of amiibo for this game and other to see if it's worth it. Don't get me wrong. I will buy the link, toon link, olimar, Mr.game and watch and Luigi figures but more info doesn't hurt.
@Jllanos22
Agreed. I'm not buying a thing until somebody actually provides me information on how these things will work not just in Smash Bros., but Mario Kart 8. I'm not just buying them because they look nice.
There's only one 3ds smash update I want; one that sorts out the lag when playing online. Does anyone know if this is even on the cards?
@Gridatttack me too! And megaman. .
Im sure i sound like a broken record now but i think having a Direct to answer all our Amiibo needs would be great! How will it work in MK8 and Captain Toad? Sure they're incredibly awesome but what else will these magical figures do?
@Gridatttack duck hunt dog amiibo will be day 1 for me…oh and megaman…and shulk…and…oh crap they got me already didnt they? Well played Nintendo well played
Can't wait. Bought a new bookshelf just for these things.
@Chaos_Eevee Here here.
@Grumblevolcano Check again and don't doubt Sakurai word. Dates are up now.
I still don't quite understand how they will work, but I'm hyped nonetheless.
I still don't understand, what exactly is a figure player? How is it different from a normal fighter? Like how is FP Mario different from regular Mario?
Hurray, I finally find out what FP stands for, never could figure it out in the screen shots. Guess it's somewhat better than HOV for the car pool lanes.
My kids have been having a ton of fun customizing their Miis and the actual fighters - never even knew you could do that, they had to explain it to me like 3x - in SSB for 3DS so I don't see how this is much of an improvement for $13 each when you can do almost the same thing for free in the 3DS version. I still have lots of hopes, dreams, illusions and hallucinations for what the amiibo could do, but based on what we KNOW s far I'm not the least bit sold.
Ohh that made me hyped for the Aiimbo's figures for some reason.
I must be the only one who does not care at all for the Amiibo functionality. I want them because I love how they look. The connectivity is just icing on the cake, and I can do without that.
As figures they look great, but I'm still questioning why I should buy these. I know they won't hinder gameplay, but I'm not sure why I should shell out money to buy them? So in Smash I connect them and fight them? Can't I already do that against all those character? Does each figure's "figure player" AI evolve to my playing style and strength? Too many questions right now.
It would be cool if there was a separate Amiibo game similar to the Mii Plaza games where you can level your Amiibos in various Nintendo games and then take them to the Amiibo game and unlock stuff or use them in some sort of game.
It's weird that the news is nothing new but I'm still hyped about the post. I can't wait to try my future Kirby on it.
@Gridatttack Yes plz
I win they where in easy to open box's as pulling apart the blister pack for such amazing figures will be painful.
@SuperMinusWorld exactly what i'm thinking, i dont really see the point so far
This just seems gimmicky to me...
I'll just wait until the Rosalina & Luma amiibo comes out to get one because each figure is going to be like $11.99 or $12.99 for one. I'm going to be SUPER DUPER broken with all these awesome things games coming out. My poor wallet....XD XD
48 amiibos.... im going to be poor really really poor
