Last year Activision published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on 3DS, an action brawler that tied in with the Nickelodeon animated show of the franchise. With the TV show still going strong the inevitable follow-up has now been announced — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze.
This title will also be coming to 3DS, and development is being handled by WayForward; the release is due this Fall / Autumn in North America and Europe. While the first game was an arcade-style brawler that was pretty average, this entry is promising a 2D platforming approach with elements of exploration and power-ups — a bit Metroidvania, it seems. The following description is from the press release.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze brings together new locations, allies and threats! The game quickly heats up as Shredder, Tiger Claw and a new army of mutants threaten the streets of New York, forcing Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo to take action into their own hands. The game’s distinguishing feature is its vast, interconnected, non-linear game world, which rewards exploration and creative thinking. Powers, upgrades and equipment scattered across New York and Dimension X opens up new environments to traverse, secrets to discover and bosses to battle.
All four Turtles can be swapped between freely throughout the adventure, and each has his own unique rhythm, with specialized stats, strengths and skills. Combat is fast-paced, emphasizing the gang’s martial arts prowess through attack and item combos, counters and finishers, but also provides tools for stealth-based approaches to avoid or tackle enemies.
This could be an interesting one to follow; will you be a Hero in a Half Shell?

We shall all pray for a good TMNT game. The last one was, what, TMNT IV on SNES? I know there are a few above average ones that came after, but in terms of great games, TMNT II, III and IV are where it is act....
Why does no one replicate that genre of game and throw it on the eshop by the way?
The first TMNT on 3DS was a lot of fun. My son and I enjoy it. Don't care to play the one based off the movie because, welll, I didn't like the movie. This one looks sweet.
Come on Activision give licensing a break for once
Interested but will likely never get.
I was interested at first, but then I saw Activision and WayForward were involved and it killed all hope I had
@ FragRed
what do you have against WayForward?
@Legromancer It's probably the combination. Activision is notorious for unreasonably short deadlines on licensed games, and WayForward hasn't been able to deliver their usual quality in such short time, either.
That said, it's entirely possible he just doesn't like WayForward in general. Tastes differ.
Can Konami and Activision work together to release the Arcade, NES and SNES games on Virtual Console, please? Ubisoft worked with Konami to release the original Arcade game on Xbox Live, so why can't Activision?
Big fan of the show, looking forward to this. The first game from the show was nothing revolutionary, but I did buy it and enjoyed it anyway. Guess I just love being a turtle. I would also love some Turlte Power on Wii U...
@Legromancer all of their license work is awful. see smurfs 2 for example.
PLEASE release this on eShop this time.
eShop release? Day one purchase from me and my son. Don't want my four year old with tiny carts to lose, want them all banked safely in our huge 3DS clamshell thank you very much
@WalupeachyTime and somehow it was worse.
Just cutting a deal whereby they re-release turtles in time and the arcade game would be good.
It's just a shame that Konami didn't release turtles in time on the wii virtual console before losing the licence, as they'd already released the NES turtles game
@DESS-M-8 I apologize, but are you referring to Turtles In Time Reshelled? If so, then I do believe you've gotten the two arcade games mixed up.
If they stick to the humor of the show and Metroidvania-style gameplay, they'd have to actively work to screw this up. Should be an easy home run.
Should be interesting to see. Hopefully they have a bigger budget vs what happened with Hotel Transylvania.
Interesting that the cover doesn't have any of their weapons shown...
@faint I'd disagree there. Aliens Infestation was great. Batman: The Brave And The Bold was also pretty slick and enjoyable. I'm also in the camp that really enjoyed Hey, Ice King. Hit-or-miss? Definitely. But not always awful.
Would love to see Konami get a license ro release their TMNT games on the VC, especially the arcade game and the SNES version of tournament fighters.
I see WayForward and my eyes light but then of course it's backed by Activision haha. I've seen WayForward take Thor on DS and made it decent. All I can ask is the same for this game.
All I want is a decent Turtles game that isn't from the 90's. (Though I can argue some of the 2003era games as ok)
Is Nintendo ever going to release TMNT IV turtles in time from the SNES? It would sell lots on the virtual console "hint hint"? And how long has donatello been missing a tooth?
I was a fan of there batman game on the ds, hopefully they are the same way forward we remember, but they were always at there best when they were making 2d sidescrollers
TMNT and WayForward? I'm on board!
@WalupeachyTime I'd also love to see Tournament Fighters on the VC as well! Sure, it's not the best Fighter in the world, but it's still pretty fun to me to this day!
@FragRed are you aware of wayforwards track record? If you ignore there 3d games they have a very solid library. Switch force, Shantae, aliens, Thor, and batman on the Ds and also contra 4
@Swiket That was my first thought too!
This is the pattern, Activision releases new Cod then gets a ton of money, gives all the money away for licensing, loses money, repeat.
I have high hopes that this will be a decent game at best. It's been so long since we've had a GOOD Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Shall be looking at gameplay and reviews of this game when it comes out and see what I think!
Another mediocre TMNT game, sign me up;) On a side note, I'd LOVE to see TMNT 1 NES get onto the 3DS VC. But seeing as it was taken down from the Wii quite some time ago, I doubt we will ever get it.
WayForward is the most overrated company in the business. Here's the secret behind that: Any property that they own (Shantae, Mighty Switch Force) will be good. Any property they REALLY care about because it's a legendary property (Contra 4, Aliens: Infestation) will also be good. Any other property will either be decent but too short and easy (Thor, Batman the Brave and the Bold, pick one that most didn't like but you thought was decent) or just plain terrible (everything else they've made).
That being said, Magic Pockets did the first two TMNT games on 3DS, and while they were both good if not great, it's nice to see someone else give it a go. Though, Metroidvania isn't my thing. These boys were meant to brawl.
The description and the fact that it's WayForward makes this very interesting.
@XCWarrior: Why do people forget about the GBA game that came with the also mostly forgotten 2007 animated movie? It wasn't TMNT arcade or in time but it was the best TMNT game in ages and the 2004 based ones weren't that bad but it seems turtles work best on 2D plane so I hope Wayforward cares about TMNT ( or atleast as much as the fans do but not the rabid ones)
Looking forward to it. I think a lot of people are missing the boat on the latest 3DS game based on the movie. I thought it was awesome! Dungeon crawler RPG in the vein of a simpler Diablo, complete with XP, weapons crafting and skill trees. Original storyline separate from the movie (I liked the movie, but to each their own), graphics looked good & most important: while it was short (around 6-7 hours) it was really fun! I beat it, then immediately played through it again. Totally check it out if your a TMNT fan, even if you don't like the movie.
Way better than the first 3DS game based on the Nickelodeon cartoon as well. The biggest fault with that one was how dumb your fellow Turtle's AI was. They would just sit there and get beat until you jump to their character and start attacking. Ninja Turtles should never be sitting ducks. Wasn't a terrible game, or even a bad one per se, just rough in spots.
Always down for a new 2D Turtles game, the Metroidvania style is always welcome. Here's hoping this title builds off how great the last one is. Will be picking this up.
@XCWarrior Hyperstone Heist was an awesome game as well. In fact, I enjoyed it more then Turtles in Time!
@Grimlock_King It's not up to Nintendo. Konami which was the developer of Turtles in time and Acivision who is the current license holder have to come to an agreement to release this game onto the eshop. There is also the issue with the soundtrack of the 80's cartoon, which in the past forced ports of first TMNT arcade game and Turtles in Time that were put in as bonuses for two PS2-era turtles games to get all new soundtracks.
So, we have an issue where the previous license holder has to come to an agreement with the current license holder and the holder of the soundtrack of the 80's cartoons.
Its tons of rights to wade though. There is really nothing Nintendo can do to get the old Turtles games onto its virtual console besides hope Konami and Activision work out a deal. Not to mention, it's unlear how Nickoloden would factor into this as well.
If it's like you say then it will never come out on VC.
Maybe this game will end up being like TMNT 3 Radical Rescue on the GB. I loved that game.
@WalupeachyTime?
Turtles reshelled was a remake of the snes game turtles in time.
Have ubisoft worked on two turtles games?
WayForward could well save this, but I'm guessing it'll still end up being mediocre.
Hmm, I love the show and with WayForward as the developer, I'll have to keep an eye on this one.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. I bought the last TMNT game on Wii and was VERY disappointed with it. Probably the first time I brought back a brand new game the same day I bought it. If they really want to wow me, Konami needs to release on Wii U eShop Turtles Arcade and Turtles in Time much in the same way Capcom released the arcade games for Dungeons and Dragons. If they threw in the Simpsons game as an unlockable title I'd be all over that too.
I was so bummed when Turtles in Time Re-Shelled was never available for the Wii. I really hope Danger of the Ooze becomes available on the Wii U. Even if its a download from the Wii U eShop. I would love to see Re-Shelled also available, but since that game is 5 years old I wont hold my breath. But seriously... the Wii U needs a Turtles game.
Why the hell is it that one of the few only companies that refuse to release on eshop have this great licence!!!??? Total crying shame and a waste
