It's that time once again for the Media Create chart results in Japan, which brought good news for Nintendo last week with the launch of Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS bringing nearly one million sales — Nintendo's figure had it passing the landmark by including eShop downloads.
The latest results are in and the portable brawler has had a strong second week, comfortably retaining top spot and sailing past one and a quarter million physical retail sales. Yokai Watch 2: Gando / Honke has passed 2.5 million units, while Bayonetta 2 makes its début in third place. The figures for Platinum's title are rather disappointing, assuming an inevitable dip in the next few weeks; Hyrule Warriors, available for over a month, has seen its momentum collapse down to 20th place, though Mario Kart 8 is still in the top 10 in what are, outside of the top few releases, low figures overall.
The top 20 is below, with lifetime sales in brackets.
1. [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS – 321,363 (1,266,008)
2. [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke – 56,380 (2,525,591)

8. [PSV] Toukiden Kiwami – 7,936 (129,256)
9. [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 – 6,396 (672,313)

16. [3DS] Medarot 8 Kabuto Ver. / Kuwagata Ver. – 2,763 (48,069)
17. [3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Don and Katsu’s Space-Time Great Adventure – 2,719 (163,540)
18. [PS3] Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition – 2,611 (32,151)
19. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 2,554 (3,788,095)
20. [Wii U] Hyrule Warriors – 2,443 (102,620)
On the console front it's another strong week for the 3DS LL (XL) despite the arrival of the New Nintendo 3DS in October; sales of the larger portable increased once again to give it a commanding lead. The Wii U saw a modest increase this week, likely as a result of Bayonetta 2's arrival; the results below have last week's sales in brackets.
3DS LL – 35,622 (31,602)
PlayStation Vita – 11,148 (12,331)
PlayStation 4 – 8,939 (23,623)
Wii U – 8,396 (7,062)
3DS – 7,970 (7,967)
PlayStation 3 – 6,078 (6,083)
Xbox One – 1,314 (3,015)
PlayStation Vita TV – 704 (817)
Xbox 360 – 103 (96)
PSP – 99 (101)
Nintendo's decision to release its first portable Super Smash Bros. title continues to pay off, though there may be disappointment — if not necessarily a great deal of surprise — that Bayonetta 2 has only had a modest impact for Wii U.

I don't know it sold worse than Bayonetta 1 opening week, third is good but what other notable titles were released that week less than 40k isn't a great start.
I can't believe that PS4 gets better without japaneses games and Wii U don't get successful with a launch like Bayonetta 2...
Yes Bayonetta!!
Hmmm, no spike in Wii U sales in other news, Smash had a great 2nd week!
That Yokai Watch yo. It is refusing to go away, which is a good thing. Smash Bros tops again and Bayonetta 2 gets a decent opening week. Overall, an extermely good week for Nintendo on the software front...
It's disappointing, but I'm sure Nintendo were expecting it. I mean, the first one was a sales flop, that's how Nintendo managed to bag the sequel as Sega didn't want it, and now it comes out on what is a pretty poorly selling console. I don't think Nintendo paid for the sequel to be a big seller, but to give it's new console some credibility with hardcore gamers, which I think it has done.
@Jazzer94
[Wii U] Bayonetta 2 (Nintendo, 09/20/14) – 38,828 (New)
01./00. [PS3] Bayonetta (SEGA) - 135,242 / NEW
07./00. [360] Bayonetta (SEGA) - 64,325 / NEW
Hmm no i'm worried about the sales for Bayonetta 2 in North america if the sales started like this .Cause next week Bayonetta 2 will drop to number 20.
Great second week for Smash Bros
@Saizo Why did you post the same thing twice and I know it sold less that was what I was saying, was I not clear?
@Saizo Hmm, Seems like Bayonetta 2 sales are sadly in proportion right alongside install bases for the consoles they release on...
Edit: Are your sales numbers for Japan only? America? Worldwide?
I highly doubt ANYTHING released to 60k or above on the X360 in Japan.
I think you need to source those numbers or double check them yourself.
I feel concerned about the opening week sales for Bayonetta 2. Hopefully the international release will help it shift a few units, but somehow I don't see it being too big a success.
Eh, I'll let the sales and marketing folks worry about Bayonetta sales. I've got it on preorder, can't wait for it to come out, and it won't change the beauty of the game itself. Leave the concern to the people who are paid to be concerned.
Same deal with the WiiU. I can't worry about how many people have it and what will "save" it. It's a great console and does exactly what I want. For me, the PS4 and XBOne are PC/entertainment centers, where I want a games console. And Nintendo has the games I want. Should I be concerned that popularity will mean I don't get great games? I'm already getting great games.
Keep in mind this is coming from someone whose favourite console is the Gamecube and loved PN03.
@ferrers405 That says more for PS4 than Wii U.
@Saizo Ouch!
Poor Bayonetta 2, it flopped worse than its prequel on 360 of all platforms and PS3. It didn't even lift Wii U sales above PS4, well it's look like the undated Super Smash Bros U will have to pick up the job but I'm starting to doubt that because of its 3DS version.
@Saizo - Wouldn't happen to have the install base numbers would you? I suppose being behind X360 on anything in Japan is just plain bad, but PS3 probably had 10x the install base when B1 released as Wii U does now?
Anybody know how B1 released in Japan w/ B2 - on disc, DL only, did they even get it? Maybe releasing B2 so close to SSB for 3DS wasn't the best timing?
How does B2 compare to week 1 W101 sales? (Unfortunately I don't think the Wii U install base has grown all that much over the past year.)
Guess I just don't see 3rd place as being bad, what would a "realistic" good number have been? If they were expecting 50k then this is sort of bad, if they were expecting 500k then this is really bad. At least Wii U got a slight bump going up against everything else out there.
Week after everybody is playing Destiny probably didn't help either, 2 completely totally different games I know, but alot of overlap in purchasers probably.
3DS LL sold 35k in 1 week!! Doesn't anybody in Japan read Nintendo Life, they are getting the new model in like 3 weeks? Now I'm curious to see if the "new" models will even get a bump at launch?
People are taking the news of a slow start a little to harshly. This is Nintendo publishing it, it doesn't have to sell as much the first week as something published by SEGA. Nintendo will make sure it's on shelves much longer, and keep modest marketing going. Plus, this time around, many may actually be getting the digital copy, so the sales a probably a good bit healthier than what these numbers suggest.
Isn't 36,000 about 4x as high as W101 was in Japan? Not a win but at least sales are heading in the right direction.
and like @Pod says, Bayonetta 2 will probably sell for quite a long time after 2014. There's not exactly going to be much competition in January when people are looking to expand their libraries beyond their xmas presents of Smash and MK8
Is it a typo that Destiny sold the same amount of units for 2 weeks for PS3 and PS4?
Was hoping for more of HW type numbers for Bayo2 but maybe it will be more of an evergreen title. I guess we wait and see what it does next week.
@Peach64 - "but to give it's new console some credibility with hardcore gamers,"
Who are all playing Destiny this week.
Bayonetta 2 was announced 2 years ago - Sept 2012 - when Nintendo was trying to change its image from Wii casual gamers playing sports and Just Dance games to Wii U hardcore gamers with Batman, Mass Effect, Darksiders, Assassins Creed and Bayonetta 2. Wii U really did try to launch to gamers.
I think that message lasted all of 6 months, as the games coming out on Wii U now are 2D side scrollers like Yoshi and Kirby and 3D puzzler Captain Toad.
I'm not saying the hardcore ever cared enough about Nintendo's new console to feel betrayed, but they are all playing Destiny and GTA on other systems, the marketing to the hardcore didn't stick. What hardcore gamer is going to buy a Wii U now w/ it's almost total lack of 3rd party support?
@Gerbwmu - "Is it a typo that Destiny sold the same amount of units for 2 weeks for PS3 and PS4?"
Yeah, I was wondering that as well, figured either it's a typo or the 1st weeks numbers were combined for the 2 systems.
4. [PS3] Destiny – 18,396 (104,291)
6. [PS4] Destiny – 13,014 (104,291)
You want to take a crack at that @ThomasBW84
@Gerbwmu
I think it will be more of an evergreen title. The Bayonetta series, while amazing, is a very "niche" series. Other than the people who are fans of the original and/or followed Nintendo directs on it, the concept of the game might seem strange. I think after more of the reviews come out (which are really good) and word of mouth spreads that sales will greatly improve.
@Jazzer94 It's only been 4 days last I checked. We'll likely see stronger sales next week, then it'll drop off.
Why Destiny continues to sell well, despite being a mediocre game, is a mystery to me. Must be the drugs (http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/why-gamers-cant-stop-playing-first-person-shooters)
@rjejr There seemed to be a dodgy figure for Destiny on PS3, have updated from 4gamer.
@Kogorn733
the bundle helps, some people just want a white PS4
This is just Japan, so I am not worried. When it comes to NA, those numbers will change.
@CanisWolfred Hopefully you're right, would be a great shame if this sold such a small amount.
@Peach64 i think we can both agree that any great game that doesnt sell great is a great travesty especially since people are swarming over incomplete games like Destiny or any other game that pretty much will sell u DLC that shouldve been there to begin with. We are to blame because we support that and not great games packed with content unfortunately. But i also cant help but laugh because what im sure u consider "hardcore gamers" is in actual fact the NEW casual gamers now and days…buy the console or consoles where u can enjoy a plethora of games…and i mean different genres not just the same old stuff over and over again but sadly that perspective is also frowned upon…hardcore gamers is a silly term we all play games but it is unfortunate that these NEW casual gamers prefer quantity over quality
@rjejr i agree with u my friend and just want it to be Oct 24th already
@abbyhitter - I agree. The first edition version sold out on Game within a day, maybe two. I expect it will sell well in the west.
@Action51 If Japan has sold 1.6 million 360's then 61,000 is not unreasonable people are going to want something on it. (And people with them probably have all consoles).
@Jazzer94
For a system that really isn't setting the world of fire, it's okay.
For those of fussing over Bayonetta 2 the sales figures are not that bad for a start and its still far better than W101 considering how Japan is mainly handheld dominant these days and I do expect to see higher sales in the west
Looking at the bright side of the Wii U news....it is very possible the Wii U has 4 games in the top 20 next week
I was actually expecting these numbers. For a title that didn't exactly light the world on fire on systems with much larger install bases, I think these sales are pretty reasonable.Hopefully it can hang in there a while and reach 100K in the long run.
@WanderingPB The gaming industry has to be the only one I know of that refers to their most casual of audiences as hardcore. Everywhere else, the term "core" is easily definable and you know it's talking about the people that actually sink a lot of time and money into their hobby. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer but there's something amiss when I play more systems and games than little Jimmy "Hardcore" who only plays GTA, insert overhyped first person shooter of the year here and the annual COD/AC releases on his Xbox or Playstation.
Ouch Hyrule Warriors
It's up against Smash Bros 3DS and Yokai Watch 2 in Japan, what do people expect? Plus we'll know more over the next few weeks how well it really does, lets not forget that after a decent opening week in Japan, the original Bayonetta sank quickly down the charts like a stone. If it's total worldwide sales figures end up being much worse than the original Bayonetta's worldwide sales on either format, then I'll be concerned.
I wouldn't take too much stock in Destiny's sales figures either as it's a bundle game with both PS4 and Xbox One at the moment.....not saying it isn't selling well, but it's not selling quite that well.
True story....I wasn't really interested in picking Destiny up but I got a decent deal on a brand new PS4 recently and Destiny came with with, therefore an extra sale for Destiny it wouldn't have otherwise had. I've put some time into it but it's really not held my interest and I'm finding Hyrule Warriors much more enjoyable. I'm intending to just whizz though the main campaign (I'm 3 quarters done with it) and then sell it to CEX whilst they're still offering an OK price....I expect that there will be an absolute ton of preowned copies floating around soon.
Come on Bayonetta, sell sell SELL!!!
@rjejr what a noob 38k in around two days for bayo, 104k for destiny in ps4 and ps3 in 16 days, wii u its just behind ps4 world wide
@PrincessSugoi My friend u summed it up more eloquently than i ever could! Im happy to teach my son that playing video games to have fun and enjoy is what's truly important. Regardless though on Oct 24th a great game is coming out…I will call out of work sick, stay home and lose myself in the world of Bayonetta 2!!!
I'm honestly amazed the 3DS LL is still selling like it is with the new 3DS now just a couple weeks away in Japan .
It's decent enough folks.
I am still getting it. I hope Nintendo gives Bayonetta 1+2 a nice marketing campaign. Smash Bros and Hyruke Warriors seem to be gearing up for success in the US, hopefully Bayonetta is successful too. Console biases and console wars are getting too out of hand. People are letting good games fall flat because of fanboy feuds. Fact is, if you can buy the same sports games, FPS, and consumer gouging subscription fees every year on a more expensive console, you can afford a Wii U.
I have recently decided to skip getting a PS3 and just wait for KH3 before taking the plunge for a PS4 or XB1. My reason? Wii U and 3DS are going to own my wallet for the rest of 2014 and all of 2015, and not a subscription fee in sight.
@Vineleaf Excellent point. Let's all enjoy the games that are available on the platforms we own.
These numbers don't show digital sales either.
If the japanese gamers are anything like me, they buy pretty much all their games digitally. If only we had digital numbers, we'd truly know how it was doing.
@Pod couldn't have said it better. Unless these guys all start jumping onto twitter and saying their game is a failure....I dont see a need to worry.
This isnt a "make or break" title that needs high opening sales. 3rd place on the software charts under two ginormous 3DS games isnt really sitting at the bottom of the barrel either.
It's only for a few days but it's obvious this is going to be another critical success and commercial failure, as most of PG's games are. No surprise, but it still saddens me.
3rd place sounds good, but Platinum's Minami commented that all of the other Platinum releases would be a C or D for sales in this article (Revengeance probably doesn't count): http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-17-platinum-games-president-rates-its-sales-as-a-c-or-even-a-d
That includes the original Bayonetta game which reached one million worldwide across two platforms with time. Fortunately, Nintendo footed the bill and it still exists for us to enjoy.
@Tritonus Digital sales tend to be 10% or less of any retail video game's sales unless there are significant deals for a digital copy, it is a game which sells out but still has demand and/or it is a game that someone can and would like to store with their system 100% of the time.
Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life and Smash Bros meet much of this criteria. Almost any console games misses out because there is less storage or reason to not get it on a disc especially if they have preorder bonuses or other specials.
@CaptainToad A first print of 15,600 copies selling out could be more of a sign of demonic resellers than genuine interest. I've got my first print and will never sell it, but it is a small number.
@Nintenjoe64 This game sold over 7 times as well as The Wonderful 101 in Japan first week which got around 5K.
@Punished_Boss I'm not sure how many people knew about it on Week 1, but since the PS3 port was abysmal and probably the 360 version had notable marketing even if there isn't exclusive content that could be why the 360 version did so well back then.
Bunch of Debbie Downers and Negative Nancys in here. Just because Bayonetta 2 was released 48 hours after the finalized date of the MC sales chart (game released on the 20th, while the charts finalized the week ending on the 21st. This is only a start and the game haven't reached a week just yet. Think positive for once... I'm sure this perfect 10 sequel from Nintendo will surpass the 38,828 mark.
Considering this launched closely after Smash, this isn't shocking. Use your heads, people...
Bayonetta 2's sales are okay given the time of the chart posting in relation to its launch date AND the fact the Wii U install base is low. It is also important to remember that Bayonetta 1 was NOT a big seller in Japan. It had a strong initial week on consoles with larger install bases, but slowly tanked. The PS3 version had sold 130k its first week and only made over 200k sales total. Games like this won't be big sellers until the Wii U's user base is increased with bonafide system sellers like Smash Bros and Zelda which Nintendo has waited a long time to put out.
Bayonetta 1 sales in Japan:
31st October 2009 1 138,864 N/A 138,864
07th November 2009 2 28,075 -79.8% 166,939
14th November 2009 3 12,167 -56.7% 179,106
21st November 2009 4 7,142 -41.3% 186,248
28th November 2009 5 4,587 -35.8% 190,835
05th December 2009 6 3,219 -29.8% 194,054
12th December 2009 7 2,647 -17.8% 196,701
19th December 2009 8 2,604 -1.6% 199,305
26th December 2009 9 2,661 2.2% 201,966
02nd January 2010 10 3,057 14.9% 205,023
Another flop for a non Nintemdo title.... it really seems the wiiU userbase is made of Mario Acolytes....
@LUIGITORNADO I would say for a system that has so few releases, it is an abysimal result (again)
3rd place isnt bad, 2nd is better and 1st is what all devs want. bayonetta 2 did sell some wii u's, not enough but every bit counts
The fact that the game is actually called "Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS " is disappointing.
@Arnoldlayne83 do you happen to have any other hobbies? Lol
@Ferkner the fact that you didn't already realize this was the game's name is disappointing...
Wii U increased by as many units as the Xbox One sold.
For all the negativity surrounding Hyrule Warriors (which is still charting ahead of the DLC) and some admittedly low numbers for Bayonetta 2 (despite the fact it's the top selling console title) Nintendo's still doing infinitely better than Microsoft. Which is only notable when you consider how much hype MS put into the One's debut in Japan.
Wii U is still chugging away, but I guarantee Nintendo's not happy about MK8, Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 not pushing hardware into the tens of thousands.
Maybe the inclusion of Fatal Frame V will push Wii U holdouts over the threshold, but western gamers won't have that option.
To be honest, if Smash U does drop in November (cannibalising Watch Dogs, and deservedly so), then I can't imagine Nintendo's going to have much in January, February or March. Nothing looked far enough along to make it out before April and Toad's Treasure Tracker looks finished.
Couple that with the launch of the N3DS, and I'd bet we'll have another software drought.
Project Cars and..?
Some oft-delayed indie cash grab?
October, November and December will be stacked, I get it.
But we should probably prepare for 2-4 months of next to nothing.
Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame all release in the same month. Smash Bros and Yokai Watch are dominating 3ds sales. How much disposable income do we expect Japanese people to have? I would expect Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame to continue to sell well, without being spectacular, for a few months.
@arnoldlayne83 I wish I was bored enough to troll on the Internet.
I sincerely hope these numbers get better, Nintendo needs to push this game. Hopefully in the future when more Wii Us are purchased, this game will keep steady sales.
Bayonetta 2 is doing really well imo - due the system it's on and how it's more 'niche' than other titles on the system (Anyone can play a Mario game but not everyone can play Bayonetta 2 due to age and gameplay style).
It makes me laugh when people say "That's because all the hxc gamurrrrs are playing Destiny and GTA hurrrhurrr Wii U is for losRRRS" I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware that the meaning of hardcore in gaming was limited to a specific genre or game? So I could spend over 1000 hours in AC:NL and still be a casual? Maxed out Bayo 1's hours and still be casual? Own lots of systems and play a wide variety of genres of games and sink thousands of dollars into my hobby and still be casual? Lmao
@NavySpheal
This is a pretty clear case of a game for a relatively niche market, which won't sell well with such a low install base, but certainly will make a compelling case for purchase of the system to genre fans.
So what I'm expecting to see is that whichever number Bayonetta 2 manages on a weekly basis, it's a number added to console sales as well.
Man Bayo 2 doesn't deserve these sales. 38k is just insulting imo. Lets hope this game does way better in the west.
Dat Xbone sales tho.
One of those copies of Smash Brothers was me! I mean I purchased it, I didn't somehow change into a copy of the game that someone else purchased. As far as I know.
Ok does no one on here realize or take into account that the game has had 1 maybe 2 So those numbers are not accurate. Next week numbers are a real indication of how the game is selling.
Don't know why everyone is so caught up on the 38k figure, considering that's only 2 days sales. If it sells like that over the next week it'll look a lot better.
Either way i'm not fussed just can't wait to get hold of my copy!
@Hy8ogen Bayonetta 2 sales haven't reached a full week yet. Just because the sequel made its debut at number 3 doesn't mean it's losing sales since was launched 48 hours that day that Media Create top software charts data was completed. Wait until next week until we get the full week result of Nintendo and Platinum Games' Wii U exclusive title.
Didn't expect it to sell much. I've preordered mine already though.I really appreciate Platinum's games, they're true hardcore games for me, not those random first person shooters the market is filled with.
