Grab those tissues, because Koei Tecmo Europe has practically confirmed that Wii U exclusive Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden won't set foot outside of Japan.
In response to Twitterers requesting news of a potential western release of this latest instalment of the Fatal Frame series using the #WeWantFatalFrame hashtag, Koei Tecmo Europe posted the following:
This sad news means that Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden is set to be the second title in the main series to not see a western release; the previous game in the series — Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen — was a Wii exclusive that only saw the light of day in Japan.
For those who don't know, Fatal Frame is an atmospheric survival horror series in which players use a camera-like device called the Camera Obscura to fight off hostile spirits by photographing them.
Are you discouraged by the news or still holding out hope that this will be the first Nintendo-exclusive game in the series released in the west? Need practise shooting elusive subjects or just need another good scare? Check your batteries, available storage, and leave us a comment!

I was pretty much expecting it, but still hugely disappointing news.
Seems like it is still open for debate. Was more of a casual I don't know then an out right NO. Wii U needs games though so maybe Nintendo will convince them to consider a Western release. Shame if it doesn't make it because this looked like another unique game that actually used the gamepad.
"...as far as we know ..." reminds me of " we do not comment on rumor or speculation." It seems as if this is more of a PR account and may not be a definitive word. And if this is a case, why give the new game a new English title.
Damn it Nintendo!!
Be nice if they put it out as an eshop exclusive with subtitles. The kind of experience it is i'd personally prefer subs anyway and it'd keep costs down without voice acting.
As it's got fairly unique gamepad related gameplay then it could make sense for Nintendo to pick up publishing duties too.
Nintendo is too stupid for words.
keep bugging! we need a decent horror game and nintendo wants to show off gamepad uses
A system with a total of three compelling software titles for the next...six months? A year? And a major exclusive will remain in Japan.
How badly does Nintendo actually want a reason to kill the Wii U?
What a failure this is.
Nintendoomed for sure.
@Technosphile its killed already.
@Technosphile Not exactly like this would have come out anywhere else in the next six months if it was being localized anyway " loading="lazy">.
Besides, the lineup still has Yoshi.... and that's about it for Spring. Splatoon is clearly going to be a May title, as it and Zelda seem to be the pillars of their advertising for next year, like MK8 and Smash Bros this year.
Awful news, what Nintendo desperately needs is more AAA games.
I take that tweet as meaning it's Nintendo's decision if and when to announce anything, and that they're abiding by that. Also, if you say '"no" whenever the answer is no, and "we have nothing to announce" when the answer is yes, people will pick up on that pattern, so I also assume there's nothing to be read into non-answers either way.
Sad news! I loved the trailer " loading="lazy">
Nintendo might yet publish this like they did with some of the late Wii games. They've not announced much else so I can't see them making new games before localising this....
This was the reason I bought my Wii U. And now I'm done. I'll stick around for Bayonetta 2, then im giving it away.
Thanks for the great memories, but Im done with you Nintendo.
I'm sad but really not surprised.
Even though this game doesn't interest me I was still hoping it would see a western release. If would have added more variety to the the Wii U game line up
This is just as silly as it gets... Really? One of my favourite series, Which seems to be nearly owned by Nintendo, for the second time not released in the west? Well, I just bought the fourth installment, and I'm going to use the fan translation. But if Nintendo doesn't release this one here in Europe, I'll be deeply dissappointed.
Good horror games in the west are EXTREMELY rare these days, especially physical releases. So much so that I even directly ordered another Japanese horror game for the Wii when purchasing Project Zero/Fatal Frame 4.
Where the f*** is Fatal Frame 4 & 5? Who are the monkeys that run these damn companies? Are we living in the idiot era now? I hate to say this but gaming is becoming a joke now, awesome games like Fatal Frame 4 & 5 we don't get but sure continue to give us craps like those lame Mario & Sonic Olympic games, yearly Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty releases, another Mario Party, etc. On top of that they had the audacity to region lock the entire thing too. Gaming is dead now, end of story.
I'm guessing these rather go towards a new gaming PC instead cuz it doesn't look like NOA and Tecmo Koei wants any of it.
@millarrp - My thoughts as well. And considering the Wii U isn't blessed with the largest of libraries, especially with this type of game this title would've been a welcome addition.
Nintendo do make some baffling decisions sometimes. "A Great company that makes terrible decisions". At least they're consistent.
@CaptainToad Unless Koei Temco is owned by Nintendo (too lazy to look up), Nintendo has nothing to do with this decision.
To be honest, I don't think there really is any excuse for not localizing games anymore. If the localized version comes out later, fine (that's to be expected). Especially with Nintendo needing to expand it's library for the Wii U, not localizing this game would be a really stupid.
Additionally, unlike many other games, even those Nintendo itself has released (Donkey Kong Country: TF) this game actually intends to use the gamepad in a unique way. Not localizing this game is like throwing a whole bunch of positive PR for the gamepad in the trash.
@Fazermint if that is the case, then Nintendo should pay KT to localize the game. Increasing the number of quality titles for the Wii U should be their #1 priority.
Nintendo needs to be on them to release this everywhere. The potential in this game is booming and using the gamepad unlike most games. Localize this game PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
Uhm, this seems like it's still in the air, so those of you who are still holding out hope don't lose it yet.
As for me, this is Nintendo we're talking about. I already have a feeling it might not leave Japan (or at least it won't make it America....freaking NoA)
i dont get why it's so difficult to get releases for different regions, except maybe for little independant devs with low budget and low visibility
but here, the title is already existing, there's only the translation work and the approval/validation costs for the various peggi, both costs should be easily covered even with poor sales in the new regions
where/what is really the obstacle to internationalisation ?
@Kogorn733 I agree with that. There's just something not right when Koei Temco makes a statement and people go "damn Nintendo". That's like being robbed and saying "Thanks Obama".
@Fazermint
Nintendo co-owns the Fatal Frame IP, and they're the publisher for the games now, so it's basically going to be up to Nintendo to decide what regions get this game. Sadly.
@AVahne Didn't know that. Whelp, one can still hope that Nintendo sends Koei Temco a memo with translate pls
@Fazermint
hahahah...... cries
Well that's dumb.
@AVahne I'm not gonna guess, I already know they aren't bringing it here. They already got 2 strikes, Fatal Frame 4 and the Fatal Frame 2 remake both never made it to NA, the remake was lucky enough to reach Europe and Aussie but never in NA shore. If Fatal Frame 5 isn't coming then this is their 3rd strike, after that I'm burying the Wii U. No reason to keep that crap of a console if we kept getting games cancel left and right especially games everyone (and by everyone I mean people other than the Japs) wants to play.
@Ichiban Ive been done like a month ago.
@retro_player_22
I feel ya. Hope you can sell your Wii U for a decent sum of you do that. I'll just keep mines for the few games that DO come over here and just hold out hope. Not for Nintendo, but for the hackers to crack the system (also the 3DS) and remove region lock. So that when we're at the end of this gen and Nintendo abandons American owners yet again, I'll at least be able to import EU localized games.
Sigh, i fell for the clickbait article title.
Edit: Wow people are really taking this as an offical confirmation? I thought i was bad for just clicking the link lol. Lol hiw many times do we ave this exact same scenario? No plans or afaik does not equal and offical confirmation.
I think that KT is waiting To see hyrule warriors sells well outside of japan . If it does i am almost sure they will at least consider the worldwide release of this fatal frame .
There goes the only title I've been looking forward to on Wii U. Nice.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
way to get salty over a tweet guys...
when the (probably awful) american version of the movie launches and there's still no localization, then you can get salty, until then relax and don't let a "we haven't heard anything yet" tweet ruin your world (it seems like this tweet was the end of the world for some of you guys..)
sell your Wii U, bury it or destroy it and go buy a new one when the game comes, I'm still expecting this to reach the west, if it doesn't then I'll get salty too but I won't get rid of my U over it there's still to much enjoyment to be had with it..
Can't believe it!!! Fatal Frame 4 on Wii had a patch developed that worked a treat. Maybe same kinda thing could be used here ..... although the patch took bloody ages to be developed and released. I'm hoping this aint true!!
@AVahne I gave them too many chances last gen and this gen. I was even nice enough to defend them when games like Aliens: Colonial Marines, Call of Duty: Advance Warfare, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, Need For Speed: Rivals (a game I really wanted for Wii U but instead bought it on other systems), Ultra Street Fighter IV, Pac-Man Museum, and Resident Evil Revelations 2 all took a passed on the Wii U. Those are exceptions because they are 3rd party titles so it's up to the 3rd party devs to decided whether they come to Wii U or not but these games, Fatal Frame 4 & 5, both are Nintendo own franchise now, there's no reason to continue holding back on these titles.
I was even more forgiving of them when they hold back on Disaster: Day of Crisis, Another Code R, Captain Rainbow, and Takt of Magic because I know those games aren't that good or popular to begin with but this is the last straw. Everyone over here knows Fatal Frame 4 & 5, they want Fatal Frame 4 & 5, not bringing those here means Nintendo doesn't care about the fanbase of that franchise. I was even nice enough to buy Spirit Camera on 3DS as well, now why did that one made it but not the others? I'm so pissed at both NOA and Tecmo Koei right now I'm not sure I want to look forward to anymore of the console's titles. Sure a new Zelda is coming, my pre-orders of Bayonetta 1 & 2 are coming too but without Fatal Frame 4 & 5, this is a dead console. If I can't play these games legally I'm not going to bother supporting the console.
Well, who knows they are giving us Project Zero U instead. " loading="lazy">
Hopefully this makes it for the people who want it. Not my thing, but a good library for the console is better for us all. Go the subtitle route for it, too, like Project X Zone. That was fun just to baffle people with the volume up, wondering just what the heck was going on with my 3DS.
very disappointed but expected
ill still keep my fingers crossed
To those of you crying over how the game might never be localized keep in mind the European branch might not be fully aware of any plans for localization. Japan is where the majority of the major decisions regarding localization are made so why don't we wait until they come out with an official statement. If they truly had no plans to release it elsewhere than why are they doing a live stream in English. Don't give up just yet
Big mistake booooooooo hisssssssss usa and eu gamers play way more games and sales.
@Wolfgabe If I wasn't pissed I would give them another chance but right now, not gonna work this time. Unless they come out and make another Nintendo Direct at the same time showing some NA footage of both FF4 & FF5 then I may reconsidered but at this moment their big mouth already ruin all excitement and expectation I had for the game.
Why cant this be download only on the eshop?
Uve come to the conclusion a good portion or gamers are idiots. A couple of things, this has got nothing to do with nintendo so far its a KT game if they choose not to release it in the west then nintendo may still pick up the publishing duties, so why is this nintendo's fault. Secondly buying a console for a game that was never announced in the west is a stupid move, gaming history is littered with games that never made it to the west its not like a precedent is being set here. Thirdly, lets be honest from a business perspective it's probably not worth the time and cost to translate the game, the sales wont be worth it.
If it comes out here I will buy it, but im not going to lose any sleep over it
@Ichiban This wasn't Nintendo's response.
@retro_player_22 This wasn't Nintendo's response.
If you are going to give a person a piece of your mind, it's Nintendo. Either email their treehouse dept. or do it on Miiverse.
@SamirMalik For Nintendo and Wii U's sake I hope it isn't their response either. This is coming from a player who still owns Fatal Frame 1, 2, & 3 on the PlayStation 2.
Sigh... I was expecting this but still I was a little hopeful to see this title on the west someday but with Nintendo, is better to always have zero expectations, otherwise the dissapointment will hit you hard. Yeah I know this is not a Nintendo only game but still. Japan has been getting lot's of good stuff lately, they have Smash, they have Bayonetta 2, they have Fatal Frame, they will have the New 3DS next week... it's not fair, Iwata, why you don't share the love to the west?? Maybe he does but Reggie denies it and he prefers to focus on bringing Wii Fit U2 featuring Bono as your new Wii Fit Trainer... At least Smash is finally releasing this friday...
@retro_player_22 Well if it makes you feel better, the english name was leaked in their Japanese stream. If TK isn't doing anything or are even aware of what's going on then it seems like Nintendo's TreeHouse team is working on it.
That's quite a shame, it'd be nice if they reconsider.
Any type of negative Nintendo news and rest assured @Peach64 puts on the negative nelly cape and commences troll strolling the comment section…
Nintendolife community: We were pretty much expecting it, but her comments are still hugely disappointing…maybe Peach64 wouldnt be so negative if she just played games for fun instead of worrying about sales and review scores then changing her mind later nonchalantly to fit in with the gamers that actually played the game " loading="lazy">
LOL im just teasing though i gotta say i miss ur Wonder Pink avatar even though u dont have a WiiU the Wonderful 101 will always give u credibility maybe u could support the games u want to continue getting #OPERATIONPLATINUM maybe?
I must say it is disappointing news but im curious as to why they would go as far as to translate the title in english in their tweet for the last Nico Nico stream? Guess we just have to wait and its not just wishful thinking(fingers crossed)
They probably consider the localization costs to be too high, its why most of the Fire Emblem games did not make it stateside. And AFAIK this title has voice acting, which is another cost, since Nintendo would not consider releasing this without voice acting. (Even keeping the existing japanese voices might cost more since they might require re-negotiation for a US or Europe release).
You also have to remember, NOJ doesn't care about the US or European markets. Most japanese companies only care about Japan.
Don't get why but i guess it's because it has japanese themes and culture. Stop blaming Nintendo for this guys this was obviously Tecmo's idea
@Morph For someone who isn't gonna lose any sleep over it, you sure have alot to say on the subject.
And yes, this was the deciding factor why I picked up a Wii U. Stupid or not keep your little digs to yourself. Kids these days eh?
Another moronic decision from Nintendo! A massive lack of games in 2015 and no horror games since zombi u. Just give me zelda so I can get rid of my wii u.
Isn't this just basic PR? The game is OFFICIALLY JP only because it has only been announced for that region. What more can they say at this point? Isn't Nintendo the publisher anyway?
@Fazermint Nintendo bought exclusive rights to Fatal Frame a few years ago. So yeah... they have ALL the responsibility to release this in the west.
@Boxmonkey Did people forget about RE:R? Also, this isn't Nintendo's response.
Well, I hope they're wrong. Our WiiU is pretty much dead here.
Probably they are afraid it wont sell well in the west..
Anyways, Silent Hills P.T is WAY much better..
Let's get some things straight here. There is no massive shortage of games in 2015. We already know about:
Captain Toad (Europe)
Splatoon
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Zelda U
Star Fox U
Miyamoto's two projects
Mario Maker
Devil's Third
That said, yes it's a moronic decision, and we should keep contacting these companies to let them know we want this game
So let me get this straight. A game that actually fully utilizes the Gamepad and it is not releasing outside of Japan? And thanks to region lock we can never play it? Brilliant!!
If true, not the brightest idea. If they're worried about sales. Eshop it.
Wow. Do they not realize that things like this is what leads to the desire to hack the console?
It'll be Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen / Fatal Frame IV all over again.
When they refused to release that game fans took it upon themselves to translate the thing on their own. Sure, at first you had to have the physical copy of the game. But that only lead to more interest in cracking the system and spreading the word on how to do it.
Now I'm not naive, the full Wii U softmod WILL happen sooner or later.
I'm just saying not releasing popular games will make it happen sooner rather than later. And that is not in Nintendo or T-K's best interests.
It's things like this that make it very hard to defend Nintendo and the Wii U.
As incredibly stupid decision as not releasing Fatal Frame 4 worldwide. Or when Sega decided not to release Yakuza 1&2 HD in Europe&North America.
NoA didn't bother to bring the (already translated) Fatal Frame 2 Wii game over, they didn't care about Fatal Frame IV, so I fail to see how this is a surprise either.
Disappointment? Yes, it's a huge disappointment. But not a surprise. On the upside, at least it's easy to get both Wii Fatal Frame games running if you care enough to make the effort and import the games. (I did.)
its a great shame. I had the one on the Wii, although I think a Wii U version with gamepad would be better suited. Maybe the Wii Fatal Frame didn't sell enough copies outside of Japan?
Nintendo have ran this series into the ground...
Oh no, let's burn those Wii U's!
[/sarcasm]
I won't give up hope though as many others have said 'why give it an english name then?' and 'as far as we know - reminds me of we do not comment on rumour or speculation' also they can't really announce an english release until Nintendo confirms it.
@darkgamer001: Miyamoto's 'Projects', Lol... I'd forgotten about those. That would be some serious meme material right there.
Splatoon and - maybe - X is all I have hope for, sadly.
I bet it gets released in west
WTF was the point of obtaining exclusivity of the series if you were never even going to use the license to it's full potential. Survival Horror id dead. FF is the ONLY series that has stuck to it's original formula throughout the series. That's why it's unique to the genre and fans WANT it. But, Relase in Japan only, where the region is dominated with handheld gaming; and those piss poor sales will dictate that we don't get it. Bravo, Nintendo. You made your Smash 3DS to compensate for the Japan region and portable console market, while gimping the WiiU version in the process. And, now THIS. You have no clue what gamers want.
@Ichiban I'm in the same boat as you. Told everyone I knew if Nintendo pulled another FF4 with FF5, I'm done. Smahs Bros WiiU will most likely be my last Nintendo purchase. It was a good 28 years. I just cannot keep defending this dumb decisions, one after another, being blinded my nostalgia and faith I had in the company.
Oh, Homebrew, where art thou?
@heathenmagic That's because the Wii Fatal Frame game that was released outside Japan was a remake of Fatal Frame II so everyone who already got a PS2 got that game already. Even so we at NA never got that remake and Fatal Frame 4 itself never left Japan. It's likely that Fatal Frame 5 may end up the same. I personally don't mind the remake but I do want to support Nintendo on Fatal Frame 4 & 5, the thing is they just don't want me to. To us in NA, it's either mod our Wii so we can play the patch version or just not bother with it at all. I did eventually get to play the patch version but I had to sacrifice my Wii to do it (meaning risk losing warranty on my console).
That's disappointing, I remember Iwata outlining Nintendo's plans to work closely with Japanese third parties to bring more of their games to the west. Did I imagine that? I haven't noticed much of a difference
Am I mistake, when this title was announced they also announced the Japanese film and they said they had made an agreement with an American film company to make a fatal frame film in the states? .... Also Nintendo themselves localised fatal frame 2 on wii so I'm assuming (probably wrongly) that a western release would be a nintendo decision and they work in mysterious ways especially when it comes to more adult material. I for one still think this game is coming ..... I typed that with my fingers crossed
I don't see why it's so hard to localize games nowadays... They could just translate it to English, leave the Japanese voices, and make it only digital if they are worried about money.
Lets make it RAIN?
Seriously!? Nintendo NEEDs Wii U exclusives that actually make good use of the GamePad. This is a terrible decision!! " loading="lazy">
Will hold out judgement until an official statement from Nintendo.
That "AFAIK" is rather dodgy.
This is by far the worst let down up until now. I'm gutted. This was exactly the game this system needed. Hang your head in shame, Tecmo! You too Nintendo!
http://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/japanese-fatal-frame-5-stream-lists-game-with-new-english-title-hmm/
Still holding out hope. It was given a name "Fatal Frame" in a japanese stream, where the only region the series is called Fatal Frame is North America. Of course, Nintendo could have shut this down, themselves. Tecmo wants to release this in all regions, but Nintendo makes the silly decisions not to.
i never knew that "as far as we know" means the same thing as "we definitely know ..." i am really bad at english. ow wait it doesn't. so, just keep calm and wait till Nintendo comes with a statement and says if its coming or not
So some some social media relations intern for Koei Tecmo who probably doesn't know much outside of a general release schedule tweets something vague and this place runs with it "as all but confirms Fatal Frame Wii U as Japan-Only?" Wow, at least some other people realized the foolishness in this too. "As far as we know" is slightly one step above "we don't know" on the clueless scale.
@WanderingPB I'd love to know how you see my comment as trolling. I said it was expected, which is based on the fact they never brought Fatal Frame 4 out, on a much better selling console, and I said it was disappointing, as I've played the first 3 and love them all. I'd be delighted if Nintendo announced the localisation at their next direct, but I wouldn't hold my breath. As much as it's considered a big game on here, it wouldn't sell well in the west.
And FYI I do have a Wii U and I also have W101. Got Bayonetta 2 pre-ordered too.
@retro_player_22
I enjoy your comment immensely.
@Ichiban no im not going to lose sleep over the game coming out, thats got nothing to do with the 3 points i made. The over reactionon here to a tweet with no real substance has been ridiculous, there's every chance the game will still come to the west, in fact I expect it to. Its been a long while since I was a kid, but the internet and the way news spreads does as much harm as good to gaming these days
Dragon Quest X, two other Dragon Quest 3DS titles, two Wii Fatal Frame games, Mother 3, Zangeki no Reginleiv ("The Slashing of Reginleiv"), Disaster: Day of Crisis...
Why, just look at this list of Japan-only Nintendo games, and go be sad somewhere with the knowledge that Sony (a Google search for "Japan only Playstation games" didn't yield results anywhere near as quickly as the same search with "Nintendo" instead of "Sony") and Microsoft have made their devices region-free and still try to port over more games: http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Japan_exclusive_games
For all we know, this may be a european KT rep not being in the know whether Nintendo has intention of brining it themselves or not. When was the last time Tecmo brought a PZ game outside of Japan themselves? Project Zero 2 for Wii was brought to Europe by Nintendo themselves, but KT Europe might not necessarily be in the know if that's the case. For me, all this tweet confirms is that if it's coming to Europe, it'll be coming from Nintendo and not KT themselves.
EDIT: I now see that Fatal Frame II & III originally came statesides through Tecmo themselves, but no PZ game was ever released in Europe by Tecmo or Koei Tecmo themselves (first was Wanadoo, second was Ubisoft, and third was Take-Two. Then the remake of the second was Nintendo themselves...). So what does a KT Europe rep know?
As expected ... still sad though. But I doubt any sane person would have expected anything else, so the disappointment should be limited. I think it's decent, that they didn't leave people hanging with some kind of vague vestige of false hope.
@Quorthon how many of those games are from before sony and microsoft even got into making games, i see a lot of snes and nes games there, also games like monster hunter 4 are on there by default because they arent out in the west yet, some of those came out under a different guise pokemon red and green for instance, and games like jump superstars had too mamy licensing problems.
I'd have played captain rainbow and soma bringer, of the games from the last few console generations on that list, thats about it. Disaster did make it to the west as well, thats one lies with NOA
Misleading headline, if ever there was one.
Why can't Nintendo do what Sony does with region free. The amount of games I import for my Vita for that very reason. I hate Nintendo region lock!
@turnmebackwards Nintendo's region lock is nothing but a big pile of poopoodoodoocacapoopledoople. Don't give me BS reasons Nintendo, if Sony and M$ can do it, so can you.
"Grab those tissues"
oh, i can guarantee you they will. i can guarantee it.
After reading the tweet more carefully, I think it says "i don't know bruh".
With the US being the largest uptaker of Wii U's so far and Nintendo's attempts to a) capture back some of the hardcore market and b) show games that utilise the gamepad and its features, it boggles the mind why this game has yet to be announced for a Western release.
I hope its just because Koei Tecmo and Nintendo are in discussions as to localisation and the T&C's.
Maybe Nintendo should take a piece from their VC Japanese releases in the west. Offer them digital only and at a slight premium, well as long as that may not impact sales.
Some of you are acting ridiculous and childish, the person that sent out the tweet clearly just said he didn't know. He never said 'NEVER COMING TO WII U, SO SAD TOO BAD' you guys make it sound like that's 100% confirmation.
And even if does officially get confirmed to not be coming, we could always pull a project Rainfall.
Edit: Actually I think a good number of blame has to go to the NintendLife writer...come on guys, this seriously counts as a confirmation?
Well it looks like it should start with burning some cars and some death threats to give them a chance before phase 2.
This game looks as if it made a good use out of the gamepad as Zombi U did.
@Morph
Sony and Microsoft are an example. Both companies are region-free now, and both tend to release their games in all regions meaning they refuse nothing to their fans. Suffice to say, if you want a certain PS4 game, you can get it and play it. This issue about not being able to play Japanese games on North American consoles is almost never heard--if it is at all--concerning MS or Sony, but it is a CONSTANT problem with Nintendo hardware.
Yep, there are NES and SNES games in that list I linked. So what? Unfortunately, this illustrates that this may be a bigger problem with Nintendo than it seems. It's not just Iwata or Reggie being stubborn, it seems to be an internal corporate culture of, for some reason, NOT releasing games.
Not surprised by this,still crossing my fingers... " loading="lazy">
Calm down people, they never said it isn't coming, they just don't know yet.
@Quorthon As others have said, a lot of those are Famicom and Super Famicom titles that were part of Japan-centric add-ons or had licensing issues (much like Earthbound did). Others like Sim City 64 were just bad games (in Sim City 64's case it did not help that it was on the N64 DD). Get past of that and you still have an issue of a small team of translators that are forced to pick what they believe will be the most commercially available.
Fatal Frame is ultimately very niche. I can understand (although I question) the reasoning for skipping it. I think they could eShop release it with English text and subtitles; and still have good sales, another exclusive, and earn gamer goodwill from fans.
What I really do not understand, is why Nintendo of America has passed on other titles. Especially when the translation work had been finished by Nintendo of Europe.
@LUIGITORNADO
It's not like anyone was going to buy this game. lol everyone needs to get over it.
@Peach64 Well my friend like i said before i was just being facetious playing at the expense of ur renowned blatant subjective pessimistic tone that ur endearing comments usually cradle so well…
Like i stated in my comments before u probably didnt read past my cynical sarcasam i am also disappointed and though it maybe wishful thinking im keeping my fingers crossed that we get this localized outside of Japan
glad to hear u finally decided to get a WiiU and r supporting Platinum games!!! i dont know if u finished W101 yet but they also have the entire awesome sdtk available on itunes and sumthing.com if ur interested in that Won-Stoppable Wonderful 101 anthem " loading="lazy"> Also DKC Tropical Freeze is on sale now which i personally think is the best 2D platformer out there. Well my peachy friend happy gaming Oct 24th cant come any sooner and then of course Scalebound!!! So many good games wouldnt u agree?
Well I was really looking forward to this game until I read an interview with the creators about it and man... Their priorities were just awful...
They kept going on about how much work they put into making the clothes revealing in water and getting tips from Team Ninja about how to model and program "chest physics". Ayame from Dead or Alive is actually one of the main characters in this game...
Would have sold badly if it had been localised so might have been a wise choice by Nintendo even if most of you won't see it that way.
@Quorthon i mentioned the nes/snes games because if anything it shows nintendo have improved with time in this regard. I dont agree with region lock, but that is another issue
Absolutely gutted. Loved the series on PS2 and bought the 2nd game in the series, on Wii, to support more adult orientated games like this making their way to Nintendo platforms. The series has a cult following that have been excluded two games now... It's like the '90's Nintendo all over again. I'll just play cruddy Resident Evil games then...
The thing EVERYONE needs to remember is this isn't a Nintendo made title. It's a Koei Tecmo title. Aka, the same company whose Hyrule Warriors just recently flopped in Japan.
So how do we bring this game West?
BUY. KOEI TECMO GAMES.
BUY. HYRULE WARRIORS.
If games like Hyrule Warriors do much better outside Japan, these games will seem worthwhile.
If they could cancel FFV, I'm sure they would. But you can't cancel a released game.
Prove it would sell, flood the company with requests and buy their other games.
If Assassin's Creed had sold well on Wii U, it wouldn't have skipped this year.
If Rayman Legends would have sold a couple hundred thousand for Wii U, Watch Dogs might not have been treated so poorly.
These aren't your friends. They're businesses.
And blaming Nintendo for not going after this game, exclusive or not, is asinine.
Wonderful 101 failed. Nintendo backed that.
Bayonetta 2 is failing. Nintendo backed that.
Why keep pandering to Nintendo gamers that aren't supporting their efforts?
If anything Nintendo backed was as successful as MK8, yeah, blame Nintendo.
But Nintendo WOULD NOT sell systems with Fatal Frame V.
GUARANTEED.
Hate me. Go right ahead. With all your names and anonymity.
But you know I'm right. Until Smash comes out, Nintendo couldn't care what this game does.
Oh and for the record, 90% of western games are either heavily delayed or not released in Japan and only a handful of devs are actually supporting it there.
If the game flops in Japan, we COULD see a West release, eventually, but people need to stop acting like Nintendo is screwing them over here.
Well, that'd be unfortunate if it never came here, but yeah, I guess there's still a chance. I'm quite interesred, and Wii U needs all it can get n' such.
@darkgamer001
There is indeed a massive shortage of 3rd party and AAA games. Miyamoto's "two games" are noted to be nothing more than tech demos that might end up stuffed into the new StarFox, and 2015 seems like an unrealistic goal for that game. Since the new StarFox has no release window, we shouldn't expect to see it until 2016. Your 2015 games list is now down by 3.
@NodesforNoids
Actually, Fatal Frame is Nintendo's. They co-own the franchise.
@Morph
The region-lock is, indeed, a related issue. It limits the appeal and potential of the console every bit as much as not releasing games. And while Nintendo has "shown improvement" (which I never denied), they still lag well behind Microsoft and Sony, who prevent you from playing nothing on their hardware. Nintendo is not porting games, nor are they letting you import them yourself. This is the exact opposite way that--and this can actually be said--literally everyone else in gaming works.
@Darknyht
They passed on those games because Reggie is no Howard Lincoln. I mean, look at what a beast that guy was: http://www.dromble.com/2013/09/07/howard-lincoln-kicking-ass-before-reggie-came-along/
@Quorthon So you can arbitrarily remove games based on your almighty power to decide what is a game and what is a tech demo, and your inside knowledge on what is and isn't coming out in 2015 despite the E3 confirmation. Nice....nah, I think those 3 games will stay on that list, thanks.
@darkgamer001
No, I didn't do anything. NINTENDO NEVER SAID THEY WERE GAMES.
Oh wow, look, TECH DEMOS, i.e. NOT ACTUAL GAMES: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-connecting-star-fox-on-wii-u-with-project-guard-and-project-giant-robot/1100-6420390/
Oh look, while this claims Nintendo hopes for a 2015 release of StarFox, it again reaffirms that the TECH DEMOS are likely related to StarFox or may be incorporated into it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Fox_(2015_video_game)
Nintendo ALSO had stated that Xenoblade Chronicles X will be out in 2014, and we know that it WILL NOT launch this year. Not a big surprise as few companies (maybe Valve) have the notoriety of delaying games that Nintendo has. Almost all E3 coverage of StarFox revealed a game that was extremely rough and very early in development--and there was no gameplay that was actually clearly shown, the EXACT OPPOSITE of Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles X, which have had revealed gameplay footage for up to two years, and over two E3's. All the evidence would indicate that StarFox is unlikely to hit a 2015 release.
And the two "Project" titles are TECH DEMOS, not games.
"Project Giant Robot and Project Guard are still considered experimental at this point" as quoted from http://nintendoeverything.com/time-leaks-3-nintendo-games-star-fox-wii-u-project-giant-robot-project-guard/
Until they are actually confirmed as games, and not just part of StarFox, IF they even move beyond the experimental phase, they are not games. It would be irresponsible to just assume these are full games to be released in 2015 when absolutely nothing along those lines has EVER been stated by Nintendo. You might as well say that Sony confirmed Last Guardian as having a 2015 release date on the Vita or that Alan Wake 2: Super Alan Wake is coming to the XBO in 2016 because "that other Remedy game will be out sometime in 2015" because just as much information has been released on those fronts. You're just making assumptions.
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/06/10/giant-robots-and-security-camera-defense-on-wii-u.aspx
"These projects won't necessarily become games themselves." http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/06/11/shigeru-miyamoto-star-fox-wii-u/
@NodesforNoids
That's quite a massive tirade considering you were wrong in the first paragraph. Nintendo Co-own the franchise.
This is very bad news.... I would've bought this game.
@Quorthon Never said they were games. Erm...wut?
Miyamoto said that they were related to the same Starfox universe but never said they're not games in their own right. It's in the interview itself
It is scheduled for 2015. Now if we want to doubt everything with a release date based on past experiences, we could do the same for a crapton of other IPs on other consoles. Until a delay is confirmed it's scheduled for 2015
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-commits-to-2015-release-date-for-star-fox/1100-6422055/
As for the other games, one is already scheduled for early 2015
http://www.vg247.com/2014/06/12/nintendo-wii-u-project-guard-giant-robot-miyamoto-e3-2014-watch-play/
I expect better from NL than headlines like this. The tweet confirms nothing; the guy clearly doesn't know if it will release here or not. Why are you putting words in his mouth?
@darkgamer001
The links you provided do not have sources, and seem to be pulling these "Q1 2015" and "Q4 2015" "release dates" right out of thin air. Nintendo's own website doesn't even have pages for these games, but it does for ACTUAL confirmed games such as Devil's Third, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Captain Toad, Splatoon, Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, etc. StarFox ALSO does not have a page as it is way too far out for any concrete information.
You don't HAVE to confirm a delay because no release dates have even been confirmed. What you're basically saying is "I'm going to believe in unproven whatever because no one has yet disproven the unproven whatever." No, the proper way to utilize logic is to simply not believe in the unproven until such time as it can be proven.
We have not received an actual release date or window, nor even confirmation on whether these tech demos are full games or just part of StarFox, which seems to be the prevailing hypothesis. Not every site online has accurate or correct information, and you appear to be running with bare scraps of information because you want to believe them. Did you even watch the video you linked? They noted that Project Giant Robot has been a conceptual idea SINCE THE N64. It may very well be just an update of an old demo that's been around for over a decade.
Nintendo is under a lot of pressure to show off the GamePad, which is why these two tech demos appeared and why they have revealed LITERALLY NO CONCRETE INFORMATION concerning them. The video YOU PROVIDED has a lot of "maybes" but nothing in the way of information. Your two links failed to provide sources for the release dates, other sites aren't considering them games, and it has been rather heavily hinted that the future for those games is completely unknown--that again, they may, indeed, be incorporated into the next StarFox. Which would, frankly, make sense--especially for the robots, as piloting a mech was intended to be part of the cancelled StarFox 2 on the SNES. Have you never bothered to wonder why StarFox news so regularly shares news with these two projects?
http://nintendonews.com/2014/06/project-giant-robot-project-guard-star-fox-missions/
You may want to actually watch the "video evidence" you supply next time. Miyamoto says nothing about release dates for either Project Tech Demo. I know, ironic, right? The very site that posted the video also posted supposed release dates that weren't even mentioned in the video! I hope StarFox comes out in 2015, but until there is something more concrete, I'm waiting.
Next time provide links with proper sources. The absolute best thing anyone can say concerning those two demos is a TBA 2015 as a placeholder, because at least that indicates that news on them is still TO BE ANNOUNCED. Hell, even GameStop doesn't have listings for these things yet, and if there's someone out there eager to sell you something that may not exist, it's them.
I played Zero 4 on Wii and it was awesome. Creepy and atmospheric.
I was planning to buy Zero 5, if it appears on Wii U.
@Quorthon So what? A lot of games are conceptual ideas that have been around for a long time. The fact is that they were shown now, not during the N64 era.
If I want to use bare scraps to believe something....well you seem to be doing the same to prove the opposite. For example, the link you provided doesn't really back up it's claim that those games will be part of the Starfox game, it's only a hypothesis. The fact that Nintendo went to lengths to display them separate from Starfox would indicate that they are more than mere tech demos or a mini game from Starfox. What seems likely is that they are separate games all linked to the Starfox universe...possibly releasing before Starfox itself to build up hype for the main game. Now that last part is of course, pure speculation...but let's just say I'm not the only one going into unbacked speculation here
So the console is in a bad software draught, they have a game which had a decent number of followers in the west and they are not going to publish it here? Whoa.... if it is true, at Nintendo they must be masochistics....
@Quorthon still think it's a different issue, being able to play japanese games is all well and good, but understanding them for non japanese speakers is a different matter.
Realistically if we had no region lock, i might have bought code of princess usa boxed version, and maybe 2 other 3ds games. Wii u I might have picked up yakuza 1+2 and thats about it. Its not really as big an issue if most games are translated which they generally are nowadays
@Jazzer94 ...I don't know where our comments disappeared too, but whatevs.
Niche? Sure of course, but you know what...you can't tell me to my face that you thought Tomadachi would have sold like it did without the marketing Nintendo pulled off. I'm not saying it would sell like hot cakes like Tomadachi did, but it COULD have sold some pretty solid numbers if Nintendo marketed it correctly to that particular market, in this case the "Niche" market, it also could have made people aware of the game who would otherwise never would have glanced at it. Marketing is the ultimate tool in the sales wars.
Very lame.
Man whats the point in making games that are region locked..
Um... he pretty much just said "AFAIK" which is not a confirmation of anything. But I guess that wouldn't have been as compelling of a headline.
The Wii U needs this as a global release. A game that makes proper use of the gamepad. Maps and off screen play are such half-arsed uses of the gamepad it might as well have never been created if that's all it is destined for.
It's sad cause I love Japanese games but I hate Japanese devs that won't sell overseas. There should be rules about this. You want to develop for a platform, fine you have to sell it everywhere.
And instead we get Hyrule Warriors?
What a tragic state of affairs.
Wii U is severely lacking in horror games. Nintendo needs to step up their game big time, if they want to stay competitive in the market.
Nintendo sadly owns the Fatal Frame title now. Meaning it would never appear on Playsation nor Xbox.
However if this game were on the other consoles. I can guarantee you that the game would be released in US & EU - Worldwide.
The only way we can get Fatal Frame series released worldwide is to stop buying Nintendo consoles, since this is the only way to make Nintendo understand that we really need this game released worldwide.
Because thats our only chance, to get this game inside our US/EU consoles.
No Fatal Frame, no new Harvest Moon...
Sorry but I don't see any reason to put money into Nintendo when my PS4 takes very good care of me. ~3~
&^%$£&^ Aghhhhhhhh Japan only Noooooooo I've been playing Fatal Frame since ps2 days such a shame japan only come on nintendo sort it out.
Extremely disappointed at this, Wii U needs good and original content so badly, Nintendo should just pay for the western localization for this game, really wanted to play this game, love the series,
Ever since Nintendo bought Tecmo they are leaving us out of the loop... We were able to get 1, 2, 3, XBOX Director's cut 2, but they let UK have the remake of 2 for the wii... WTF.. then you try to give us that horrible Spirit Camera which took me not even 30 minutes to beat... What did we do to not get these translated? Now I have to buy a UK Wii, a Japanese Wii and a Japanese Wii U just to play.... Screw you nintendo it's not fair.. I love this series over all the games they have done... T~T Just not fair...
