Final Smash Attacks aren't just powerful moves to obliterate enemies, but also shameless, glorious fan service — perhaps that's part of the reason why we loved them so much in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Whether an insane charge shot from Samus or a hulking great Landmaster for Fox, they stick in the mind.
Masahiro Sakurai's most recent daily Miiverse post is too good not to share right away, in that respect, as it shows the Final Smash for Mega Man; it brings together another four iconic heroes from the franchise and its various spin-offs. The image and Sakurai-san's quote is below.
Pic of the day.
MegaMan.EXE!
X!
Mega Man!
Mega Man Star Force!
Mega Man Volnutt!
The Mega Man legends, united.
Many of us have favourite characters, but how many of you are desperate to take Mega Man into battle?

Simply put, this game is gonna be huge!
To be honest, if i was capcom, i would be ashamed beyond belief by this.
That a collaboration between Namco and Nintendo manages to please the fanbase to such an extend where capcom, owner of the MegaMan IP failed to do so for years and years...
To me the most hyped character is a tug of war between Mega man and The Villager I love both soooo much
What indicates that this is Mega Man's Final Smash?
@Liquid_ice I'm pretty sure that Sakurai said that this was his final smash in the big smash direct.
I'm just happy to see X - out of the all the Mega Man games I've played (and I've played a bunch of them, starting with the original on the NES), the X series on the SNES was definitely my favorite.
@L
Tiny case of "I am not Shazam", probably needless to nit-pick, but that Mega Man is called Shooting Star Rockman, not Star Force...you could probably get past by calling him Mega Man-Xis or mentioning that Omega-Xis fuses with Geo...maybe even Mega Man-Omega?
Or maybe it's just a translation, they probably didn't realize that they avoided calling him "Shooting Star" outside of Japan? storywise, the Star Force becomes less relevant because that's the thing of the 3 satellite admins, Leo, Pegasus and Dragon.
Oh man... I'm pumped to use Mega Man as my main fighter for this one. Ever since he was announced, really. But this singular image confirms it!
I almost exploded when I saw this in the direct lol. Its a dam shame we have not seen a new MegaMan game in years.
These should be his alt costumes.
@Jazzer94 You were 6 minutes faster than me haha ! Really wish I can play as X. Same moveset and all, but with a X skin! That would be nice
This isn't a new Mega Man game!
Buy Mega Man from Capcom! Or even better buy Capcom! And put Retro Studios and Keji Inafune in charge of a Mega Man revival!
@Liquid_ice Check out Mega Man's (the original one) eyes. They're glowing.
I can't avoid to think that MegaMan didn't need a "crossover-summon" for make a final smash, but let's face it, this is too awesome for complain against it ^o^
And even show a lot of effort and love for craft the character, it could look like a simple attack as concept, but making all the extra models and animations it's admirable for say the least
.EXE FTW!
This is cool.
And there's still plenty of options for alternative costumes... Bass and Protoman anyone?
These are the alternate costumes for his armored form. There's also a Xero Suit Mega Man that's a completely different character, where he's completely topless except for a cape and helmet. Oh, and rocket boots, can't forget the rocket boots.
I'll be too busy thinking about this video to have a fanboy fit.
But seriously, it would be cool if you could use them as alternate costumes. Wish Sakurai would confirm if Wireframe Mac is the only one. There are so many cool choices for alternative costumes.
Awesome screenshot! Can't wait to play as Mega Man in this game!!!
As @Jazzer94 and xj220_afiles said, it would be awesome to have completely different models for alternative costumes, for every character!
@Einherjar
This is Sakurai telling Capcom: "look at this! You have 5 different Mega Man and you are not using ANY of them!"
Inafune cares, hence his successful Kickstarter campaign. And his desire of going back to Legends 3.
I like the way he words that... "The Mega Man LEGENDS united"
No Mighty No. 9?
Rockman!!! <3
@Liquid_ice The fact that you see 5 different generations of Megaman all on one screen and the Original 8-bit one's in the middle giving the attack.
My favourite games are MMX4, MM6, MM&Bass, and MM9. The Mega Man games I've played are all of Classic Mega Man and some of X, so I'm only familiar with two of these Mega Mans shown here.
Ah, I'd forgotten about that Final Smash. For a sec, there, just before clicking into the article, I was thinking it moght have been an announcement of alt models for Mega Man. I was super jazzed to play as X, at long last.
No MegaManZX!?
These could be doable as alternate costumes (Wireframe Mac will not be the only one, if history serves) except when considering the balance ramifications of increasing Mega Man's height. It may be a small deviation but Sakurai lords over such balancing issues and I wonder if he would be comfortable subverting or tweaking his system for the sake of a costume change.
I had already done 2 screencaps of this, offset by the gleam on the busters, to a shot closer to the one above, with a minor gleam. I still have to doctor the pics to remove everything else. Now I will add this official shot to my collection. This is MM's final smash; it was in the ND(irect).
@Ack: "if history serves" - You are correct. Brawl had alt costumes/models for Wario.
@Everyone: A lot of people wanna play as X. I definitely would, although I'm totally happy that MM is playable to begin with.
To put into perspective, these five Mega Man represent the five previous gens of Nintendo:
If we add in Mighty No. 9, that one would represent Wii U & 3DS
This picture made me tear up a little..I will definitely main Megaman and Charizard.
@Baum897 NEVER PLAYED A MEGAMAN GAME? SHAMEFUL!! Now go pick one up in the VC
Hoping for a new Mega Man game for wii u or 3ds with all this love Nintendo is giving Mega Man.
@Einherjar I don't think they care. They are not making Megaman games simply because they don't sell that much, so having them cameo in another game is not something they will make them lose sleep or something.
@minotaurgamer Unless I'm wrong, Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 both sold very well across three platforms each. I'm not sure how Capcom could have lost money on those games given they were basically NES games at their core.
I do know they were at the top of the download charts on the Wii for the longest time.
I think their refusal to work with Mega Man comes from bitterness towards Keiji Inafune leaving Capcom and his outspoken nature.
Its gotta be something more than Mega Man game's don't sell anymore given Capcom has gone out of their way to mock Mega Man and the fanbase of the series. I don't care what people say, Bad Box Art Mega Man in Street Fighter X Tekken was a slap in the face to Mega Man fans.
Smash Bros 4 is the first time in years Mega Man has been shown some decent treatment. And given Mighty No 9 has done well on Kickstarter, I think the market is hungry for a new Mega Man game or something like it.
@Baum897 Well, im a total MegaMan addict and absolutely biased towards him. He will be my Smash main regardless of how he plays
I know, its stupid, but a fanboys gotta do, what a fanboys gotta do
@sinalefa Exactly ! And honestly ? Look at how easy it was ! He just listened to the fans, nothing more, nothing less. They wanted him in Smash since brawl introduced 3rd party characters. Now hes in and as a bit of fanservice, his final smash includes pretty much most of his most important incarnations.
All he did was work with what past capcom had already established and instantly created a giant ruckus around HIS game.
That capcom abandoned the MegaMan IP because "i doesnt sell well" is complete lunacy. Its one of THE most iconic IPs out there that even survided to the present day. I would even say that his status comes close to that of Mario.
How capcom treats this IP alone, regardless of how bad the others are handled, just shows how urgend it is to replace their head honcho, and quick.
@Caryslan
The Kickstarter not only did well, it was a smash success. Something like Cult County won't even get 500 K and Mighty scored 4 million,securing each and every stretch goal. There IS demand for Mega man, of that I am sure.
And yes, that fat man was like a middle finger to fans: "You wanted Mega Man, didn't you?"
The only thing I could think of is that Capcom wants to use Smash Bros to build hype and awareness, and then present a new Mega Man game, but by then No 9 will be upon us. Wishful thinking on my part, I know. Without Inafune, Mega Man will not be the same to me.
I really like Megaman and all but out of these Megaman.exe is my favourite. I would have loved to see Zero though as he is my favourite iteration of Megaman. I know that he would stand out due to his red colour, plus he starred in a spinoff to the X series (a side series itself) but since this smash is there, Zero is Missing!
@sinalefa lol so true, I really hope Capcom does something with megaman while he's hyped for smash Bros
@Caryslan Not really. MM9 had good but kinda mediocre sales. The only reason why they made MM10 was because the developers wanted to. If they were that succesful where is MM11? There you go.
I know is hard to admit but kids don't care about MM anymore and the only people that bought 9 and 10 where fanboys. And seeing how awful those games where (contrary to what journalists and message board gamers like to say, MM games were hard but not stupidly though) maybe is for the best.
This is beautiful ;_;
@Liquid_ice
Megaman's yellow eyes
@Einherjar
At least they stocked a decent chunk of classic Mega Mans on Wii U and 3DS eShops, and to Capcom's credit, they DID make a Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10, both of which were all money. The most we can hope for is to see MM9 and MM10 added to the Wii U and 3DS eShops, then wait for Mighty No 9 to release next year.
@JaxonH When MM9 and 10 were made, Capcom was still in possession of all of their senses. After that, it went downhill, and fast !
And the VC thing, well, the WiiU VC is still missing a huge amount of games, the promised GB titles are still nowhere to be found and Mighty Nr.9 snt even from Capcom
All the Megamans together! That's really awesome!
Seriously? this is old news! I watched a video of this on YouTube the day after the SSBDirect.
@Einherjar
The GB games come in May. All 6 are hitting the 3DS eShop next month. It's something at least. And while Mighty No 9 isn't from Capcom, we can still enjoy it as a "Mega Man" game. I'm just saying from the viewpoint of a Mega Man fan, it's all good now that Inafune is looking out for us. Forget Capcom. Like I said, I don't expect much from them. Gimme the classics, throw 9 and 10 on the eShops, and I'm good. I think when they decided it was a good idea to put the fat old MM in Street Fighter x Capcom, that's when they lost their senses.
@JaxonH "Bad Boxart MegaMan" was actually a well meant joke to promote the then upcomming and later canceled "MegaMan Universe", which also starred him in this form as some sort of optional character. It just hurt like hell since after that, MegaMan was pretty much dead. That was more or less the last time weve seen him properly.
Instead of being a "tongue in cheeck inside joke" it was the worst kind of swansong.
Also, deont get me wrong, i like the idea behind Mighty Nr.9 and the game looks extremely promising...but its no MegaMan.
I know, its all aesthetics, but i grew up with the blue bomber, it actually was the first game ive ever played, so it means quite a lot to me.
I cant just switch that off
So yeah, the ruckus around the blue robot hurts like all heck, and the "promise to catch up on the VC titles", especially comming from Capcom means absolutely nothing. I believe it once ALL games are available, and not a minute earlier.
that awesome moment when nintendo cares about megaman and the sad moment when crapcom doesnt care about megaman
@Manaphy2007 You would think that Capcom would realize that people will buy Megaman if given the chance. But nope, they would rather tank as a company.
@scrubbyscum999 thus the term crapcom, nove giving a crap and also screwing their own company to the ground.
The day that Capcom develops Megaman 11 and Megaman X 9 is the day that EA develops their biggest game without DLC required to finish the game.
I'm in the minority who isn't wowed by a "family reunion," even while having much love for the family. It feels like a lazy concept for a Final Smash, especially given Megaman's rich history to draw from. But since many fans go gaga for cameos, I guess the developers anticipated and delivered.
If we have to have a cameo-filled Final Smash, I'd rather see Protoman, Roll, Bass, and/or Duo at Megaman's side; if we have to have a giant beam Final Smash, I'd rather have Megaman's Marvel Vs. Capcom super. But what I'd really love is to see the Super Adapter or Rush Jet in action.
@Liquid_ice
Mega mans final smash

More Mega man in one picture from Nintendo than what Capmcom has done in years...
@SahashraLA I think you may be giving /me/ too much credit, for I never suggested that the MVC titles were top-shelf, and I never even mentioned Capcom. If "shameless fan service" is meant to characterize my post as undue praise of Capcom, that's not what that term means. (If it's meant to describe Megaman's Final Smash, that is appropriate, and I'm glad we agree.)
As for why I'd rather something else over "all of the Megamans," I suppose it's for the same reason I wouldn't be thrilled if Link's Final Smash simply had every iteration of Link appear, or Bowser's had all other major Mario villains appear. As I said originally, those would feel lazy, compared to what can actually be done with the characters themselves. I'm not against the other Megaman characters, but I think it'd do all of them more justice if we saw them appear in more individualized appearances, such as Assist Trophies. (I'm not advocating they all be ATs, though; that would be oversaturated.)
Sakurai's interpretation of Megaman, the playable character, is at once traditional and unique. The Final Smash "creative and distinct," though? No, it's been done. To offer but a few:

@Lasermaster123 Zero is a completely different character, not an iteration of Mega Man.
@Liquid_ice Megaman's eyes are glowing? besides... Just looks at it.. this screams final smash
@mjc0961 Well yea I know that he is technically not a Megaman in the same vein as that role is fulfilled by X, but he is still my favourite in any Megaman game so would have wanted him to make an appearance.
@Liquid_ice the nintendo direct they made not to long ago
It seems that Nintendo knows how to better utilize other companies characters better than the companies that own said characters. Sonic handles in Smash better than he does in his own games.
I'm happy and disappointed at the same time. I am really happy Megaman is a character but, why megaman? Almost none of his attacks are physical unlike one character I know. "cough" "cough" Zero "cough" "cough" X. but really, you could have done Zero and X. Megaman may have been the first but people like X and Zero more.
@Discipledoctor mighty no.9 is not a megaman game. and its not even out yet so we don't even really know what he does really.
