When it comes to confirming the software number one in this week's Japanese Media Create software charts, it's a predictable task. Pokémon X & Y has stormed to the top spot with over 1.8 million sales at retail, just beating the week one sales of Monster Hunter 4. Capcom's title has continued its solid momentum by coming in third place, accumulating another 110,208 physical retail sales; there are no Wii U titles in the top 20.
Check out the list below, with lifetime sales in parenthesis.
1. [3DS] Pokemon X and Y – 1,866,570 (New)

20. [PSV] Getsuei Gakuen: Kou – 4,527 (New)
As expected the releases of X & Y have boosted 3DS hardware sales, with significant increases over last week. Sony's Vita saw a major bump with the release of lower priced models, but this week brings a further decrease in Wii U sales, with Nintendo's console falling below the PSP — last week's sales are in parenthesis.
3DS LL – 141,245 (85,885)
3DS – 72,325 (37,102)
PlayStation Vita – 60,166 (3,538)
PlayStation 3 – 12,395 (10,232)
PSP – 3,467 (4,093)
Wii U – 3,276 (4,001)
Wii – 703 (914)
Xbox 360 – 575 (354)
Rather grim reading for the Wii U, with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD having little impact on hardware sales in Japan in recent weeks. The good times keep rolling for the 3DS, however, with yet more impressive sales.

wow looks like GTA is popular even in japan to be in 2nd place....
and for those that have Pokémon X/Y don't send swapnotes with images of the game for those that don't have but want..... it's mean...
thats a huge number!
Great week for 3DS. I think that the new Wii U family edition bundles with lower pricing coming to Japan on October 30th will greatly help sales; Nintendo really should have launched those bundles as soon as they announced them because now they have to deal with deeper sales droughts for the system until the bundles are released.
Holy cow at that jump in Vita numbers. Shame we can't see that kind of spurt for the Wii U.
3DS: a Beast, already destroyed last year sales(4.4m vs 4m), Pokemon (as always) amazing
Vita: Nice bump, the new models and a few new games... we have to see how long does it last thou...
WiiU: Nintendo, get your poopiedoodledingdongdoggiepoopsiedoos together or just... i dont even want to say it
Watch the profanity please — TBD
Well the Wii U sales dip again
Seems like Zelda can't even help the Wii U in Japan.
Dang! Go Pokémon!
Seems that more than 1/4 of the worldwide sales for this game came from Japan... wow...
In comparison to previous Pokémon games first week:
Diamond/Pearl - 1.6m
Platinum - 990k
Black/White - 2.6m
Black/White Version 2 - 1.5m
X/Y - 1.865m (excluding digital)
I don't think Zelda has as much of a impact in Japan. That being said the numbers in America's and Europe will probably be really good. Well considering what it normally does anyway. I am still waiting for my copy of Pokemon X.
Dang. That Vita bump is massive.
@CaviarMeths that's because they launched a new cheaper model and they put together the sales of both.
@cookiex pretty impressive for "2 days" of sales XD.
More confirmation that handhelds are where its at in Japan. Glad both 3DS models are doing well, with both doubling their sales from last week. Not surprising Tomodachi Collection and Animal Crossing are still on the top 20 after all this time.
Mario and Luigi still being there impresses me. I heard a lot of good things about the game. I'm tempted. Luigi's Mansion 2 fell off, but it was there for a long time.
My guess is that people are waiting for the big shopping days/ Christmas for their Wii Us at this point
My guess is that people are waiting for the big shopping days or Christmas for their Wii Us
I cant act surprised at Wii U sales. There are simply no games for it. Nintendo is focusing ALL of their efforts on the 3DS. Until Mario 3D World hops around and another HD Monster Hunter is released, don't expect success.
What is hapening to Wii u?? ??
I wonder if the slow death of Wii U sales in Japan at the moment has anything to do with the new bundles coming out there soon? The sales dipped in the US just before Wind Waker (and are up 147% in the last 4 weeks over the previous 4).
@gojiguy - someone at Nintendo is saying "we must save the Wii U, lets save it with 3DS software!"
GTAV managed to put an Xbox game into the charts!
Outside of the hardcore fans like us (if you're posting on a Nintendo news site then you're definitely hardcore) most people aren't interested in remakes, no matter how great the game is. Mario will be the real indicator. The Wii U could even be the top selling console that week.
@Bliquid
2DS isn't being released in Japan. It's for western markets only.
Huh. Vita getting a small boost. But well end up selling horrible again later on, Sony needs to stop this from happening, but I doubt they care. Let's see how the Wii U bundles that's coming out does.
@ShadowFox254
Naww I think the Vita would be a decent second place in Japan, the rest of the world is its problem
Also, just for some perspective about people going nuts over things like Wii U sales going up 700%... the Vita sales increased 1700% in Japan this week. Just shows how you can easily end up with crazy percentage increases when sales are so low to begin with, and it's kind of pointless to react to a percentage.
Did anybody really expect Wii U sales to go up the same week over 200,000 3DS and 3DS XLs were sold? Nobody would be playing on it anyway w/ 1.8 mil X+Y games sold.
So why aren't the Japanese getting the 2DS?
I wonder how they localized GTA5 o.o
sees some of the comments on here ...lol...gotta love TBD's editing. xD
You know it's time for the Wii U to gain mementum when Peach64 is being optimistic about the future! ; )
Also @Nintenjoe64 seriously the attach rate for GTA5 in Japan must be phenomenal considering it's miniscule sales there.
I'm glad that the Wii U continues to fail. Did Nintendo seriously think that a lazy port like WWHD would save the console?
Nintendo needs to relaunch the Wii U with a new and amazing ad campaign,
They should release the Wii U with new colors like (Blue or Silver) and with some sweet bundles like (Nintendo Land + Wii Sports HD) or a green Wii U with (super Luigi U + Super Mario bros U inside the box.)
The Wii U is like a sinking ship and I don't really know why Nintendo is not making an aggressive effort in saving the system, unless they have something up there sleeves that we don't know about, or that they think Super Mario 3D worlds and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze will make the difference.
Why are you guys talking about WiiU on a Pokemon Game release week, obviously any Japanese Nintendo Fan will only be getting Pokemon this week.
Next week shouldn't be any better as all Nintendo Fan will only be playing Pokemon. The October 30th is the important week for WiiU. If they can't break 50k on that week then it's just sad.
@Peach64 True, but you could definitely say the Vita bump was amazing this week. 1.700% is a LOT, but so is 600%. Just take a look at last week's chart: the Vita sold roughly as much as the Wii U sold this week. That's definitely impressive.
Hmm... Maybe Ninty should release Pokemon Z for Wii U? This Christmas?
@Yasume ..............
Anyway, good for 3DS. SM3DW please come out! Like @Peach64 said, you could make the Wii U top console for weeks in Japan! And the bundles should help, too!
Before I go, I will say this: I will not be blind, but I will be optimistic about Wii U's rebound.
@redsoul91 Japan doesn't really have a huge "holiday" shopping season like many western countries do. I wouldn't hold my breat for a sales hike on that day if we aren't getting one normally, unless a lot of huge games are coming out in December.
Like I said, more of the same. The top three console spots were taken by handheld consoles. Its just where Japanese gaming culture is, and has been leading to for quite a while. Its also one of the many reasons that Microsoft isn't a huge gaming presence here.
You know, if Sony would just get some major titles out on the Vita they could sustain these bumps. Its not like people are completely cold to the Vita, even in Japan. What makes this more impressive is the fact that the bump happened around the time Pokémon X & Y came out. Sony just needs to push their momentum and get some games out that will sell the Vita.
But those Wii U numbers, I just don't know what could sell that console in Japan. I doubt even Mario could make a dent in sales. Looks like Japan has truly turned their back on console gaming. The PS3 is the only one that has even a half-way decent showing, and that's several years old.
Looks like Japan will keep up being the main market of handheld consoles.
I'm starting to worry about Wii U ( But hey, this is predictable, no games coming for Wii U this week and Wind Waker just loose all the impact of being a new release. Sigh, let's hope it recovers with Sonic Lost World and from there till November with the release of their savior/hero of the year: Super Mario 3D World. That game for sure it would save Wii U just like it did with the 3DS with 3D Land.
@AdvanVC I don't think the release of 3D Land was the sole reason that the 3DS turned around to become the biggest console in Japan, and a major player in the western market, There was a lot of factors.
@Tsuchinoko Well it's true, the 3DS is in a totally different market and stuff, but let's just hope 3D World can do something good for Wii U, sell a lot and it can stay in good position till the next batch of big games like DKCTF or Mario Kart 8.
@AdanVC Sonic has never been a big seller in Japan since the days of the Megadrive/Genesis, so I doubt Lost World will make much of an impact over there. Which means it will come down to 3D World, and while I can see Wii U sales improving, I just don't see it helping much in the long run.
Its not even the fault of the Wii U, Japan just seems to be cold to consoles now. It says something when the PSP can still outsell the Wii U despite its age and no games charting this week. To be honest, I'm not even sure the PS4 will do any better.
It says a lot when Wind Waker HD has helped turn around the Wii U in other regions outside of Japan. 3D World might give a bump, but I just don't see it pushing the Wii U that much.
The PS3 is the only console that still has a decent showing, and it's several years old and established. Plus, I would bet its sales are still lower in Japan than they are in the West. I have not see the PS3 get over 20,000 units sold in a week in a long time in Japan.
Short of Dragon Quest XI or Monster Hunter 5 being exclusive to the Wii U, I don't see it changing.
Its not the Wii U's fault, Japan just seems to prefer handhelds over home consoles now. At this rate, I doubt the PS4 would make a big impact over there. Maybe that's the reason why the PS4 is launching in the West first.
Home Consoles just don't seem to sell over there anymore.
Good to see the game selling well.
The 3DS/2DS is certainly back in top form after the terrible start.
Consider my original thoughts that the 3DS would struggle going forward this gen to be corrected. It will be interesting to see how it ultimately fares compared to the huge success of the DS when the generation comes to an end...
If only the Wii U could see such a boost.
i WONDER why.
People moaning about Wii U sales did you really expect people to rush out and buy a Wii U when Pokemon X and Y are around? Its to be expected since handhelds are pretty much king in Japan
Ya know, I don't understand the public's lack of interest in the Wii U. I really don't. The console is genuinely innovative and impressive with features that actually do enhance the gaming experience, the price is definitely right, and there are quite a few really great games to be played on the system. It's quite appealing (it was appealing before all the games came out and price dropped to me, but definitely is now).
Without getting into the clusterf$$$ of pointless criticisms about the console, which there is a great bit of when it comes to gamers, the Wii U provides a funner experience than any console I've ever owned. That's why it's so great- and my activity log is usually between 100-150 hours a month, and I work a full time job PLUS overtime AND an hour travel time both ways! Even my 3DS doesn't get play time now! I never played my Wii, Gamecube, or even the mighty N64 back in its heyday, or any line of PlayStation, as much as I play my Wii U.
I think the Wii just left a really bad taste in everyone's mouth from those 2 years of shovelware bombardment. The Japanese public appears to be keeping their distance from the Wii U for the time being, and considering how Nintendo allowed the Wii to turn into a dumping ground for low-grade party games, perhaps it's going to take a little extra time for everyone to warm up to the Wii U.
@Nintenjoe64 360 has been in the charts before in japan, but normally at the bottom I think...
Damn, poor Wii U. At least my 3DS is still busy kicking some donkey. Go 3DS! :B
@Caryslan People shouldn't be so quick to generalize what sells in Japan and what doesn't. Remember, Skyward Sword actually did rather well in Japan, and Phantom Hourglass did really well.
People are always talking about the sales of Zelda games being low in Japan, when that's not true, Sonic games are harder to talk about in this way, since he's not really been a big seller for a long time. But that's not only the case in Japan now, is it? I think Sonic is unreliable as a franchise, and that's why many Japanese game buyers don't automatically go for his games, unlike Monster Hunter or Pokemon, or Mario, or depending on the console and the timing, Legend of Zelda. I say this because after doing some research, I've found that actually even though the console Zelda games do merely okay, the handheld Zelda's, including Ocarina 3D, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks were all high sellers. It seems that one of the things holding back Wind Waker HD might have been the console it was on. Hopefully this common expression about Zelda games in Japan can be put to rest.
I honestly don't know what will happen with Sonic Lost World. It just seems that, unlike our friends Pokemon and Monster Hunter, its just not easy to tell.
EDIT: I just did a post on the A Link Between Worlds thread comparing the sales for Wind Waker HD to other recent titles (WWHD's 30,000 versus, say Phantom Hourglass at 304,000, or the original Wind Waker at 360,000).
Just for fun I looked at the sales of all the Sonic games. Yikes...Saying that Legend of Zelda and Sonic are both low sellers is a huge disservice to the Zelda series. Other than the Olympic games titles, they are sell horribly, and I mean ALL of them.
Just compare Sonic Colors. The Wii version did first week sales of 4,301, and the 3DS did 2,944. Even just comparing that to Skyward Sword's 198,719, or Spirit Tracks at 306,830 is really unfair.
I wouldn't expect Sonic Lost Worlds to pull the Wii U out of its ditch. If any game was going to do that, it wouldn't be a Sonic game.
Aww yeah Danganronpa in the top 5!~~~~~~~
One of those copies is mine now~! ^^ Love that series - you guys should try it out sometime, ace attorney x battle royale x persona 4
Anyways yeah I'll keep Pokemon Y (the one I'm getting) on hold for a few more weeks, due to that gamebreaking glitch I heard about.
-Wont be getting that game until nintendo patches it ^^
Maybe people were confused and thought the Vita could play Pokemons
Nintendo is gonna have to make a steeper cut in the price of the Wii U for it to sell. in the 200 dollar range.
@Jellitoe Ok, I don't agree with that. That would just be too deep. The losses would be too great.
