Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D has only just made it over to Japan and the 3DS title has swung right into number one position in the sales charts after shifting 104,569 units.
It takes the place of Tomodachi Collection: New Life, which has been a consistent seller for Nintendo in the Land of the Rising Sun.
The Japanese top 20 was dominated by 3DS titles, with the top five all being available on Nintendo's handheld.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Animal Crossing: New Leaf are residing in fourth and fifth position respectively, while Shin Megami Tensei IV - which entered at number one about a month ago - is now sat in seventh.
As for Wii U, there was one title in the top 20 in the form of New Super Mario Bros. U, which was unfortunately propping up the rest of the table in last place.
This week's software sales are below, with lifetime sales in brackets.
1. [3DS] Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D – 104,569 (New)
2. [3DS] Tomodachi Collection: New Life – 43,372 (1,133,246)

20. [Wii U] New Super Mario Bros. U – 2,224 (521,251)
In terms of hardware sales there's been little change. The 3DS XL is dominating - with its closest rival being the original version of the console - while Wii U sales were slightly down on the previous week.
The full hardware sales chart is below, with last week’s sales in parentheses.
3DS LL – 29,533 (27,172)
3DS – 17,602 (12,700)
PlayStation 3 – 10,872 (10,394)
PlayStation Vita – 10,664 (9,733)
Wii U – 5,983 (6,330)
PSP – 5,651 (5,076)
Wii – 1,461 (1,060)
Xbox 360 – 397 (432)
It's pretty much business as usual in Japan, with the 3DS dominating on both the hardware and software front and with plenty more games on the horizon the trend isn't showing any signs of stopping.

Good news.
Yep, Nintendo definitely needs to get out of the hardware business If I hear that one more time, so help me God!
Great Job Nintendo!!!
DK!!! DONKEY KONG IS HERE!!!!
I can't help but smile when I read great news about the 3DS
I need to go to Japan! I just keep thinking to myself how many StreetPasses I'd average a day as compared to my 5/month that I receive here in my town?
@gavn64 yep it is.
15 games from Nintendo in the top 20...doomed you say?
@Neo-GeoFan
No kidding. People seem to forget about Nintendo's handhelds when they say stuff like "Nintendo is doomed if Wii U fails."
What an awful week, everything that its not a 3DS its dead in Japan, the 3DS its hitting aroun 12m LTD, but it will never reach the DS numbers (wich sold more than 100k for about 2 years EVERY WEEK)
when i say that it will never reach the DS numbers its not a bad thing, its just that the 3DS its doing great (even better if you see those Vita numbers and that Japan its a hanhelds land) ! but its a long shot from the monster that its the 3DS
Worth noting these games sales figures are retail only not downloads.
Anyone who has yet to buy a 3DS should really pick one up, the backlog of games is amazing and the forecast for the rest of the year is awesome aswell. Can' wait to see the figures when Pokemon & Zelda are released.
Wooow...the 360's sales are terrible there.
Go Ninty!
And they wonder why they are making a new one for Wii U and not Metroid...
@Emblem
Just picked up a 3DS myself because of the amazing backlog (also BC with DS games? TY Nintendo). It will definitely keep me busy until Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101. And heck, I haven't touched Pokemon in ten years, but X and Y have me really interested!
@Joshers744
The Japanese have never really warmed up to non-Japanese game systems. Most retailers there stopped selling Xbox 360 systems and games a couple years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if a large portion of the current sales are to Westerners that live in Japan.
In Japan 3DS and consoles rule. They don't use PCS a lot for gaming and play games in public on handhelds.
Its a totally different market than EU and NA. EU/NA adult gamers mostly use smartphones. They mostly won't be caught dead with a 3DS in public, many use PC to game.
The rest of your comment was unnecessary, it stands just fine on its own — TBD
Wow, Japanese sure love them some 3DS! Me too Lots of great games on the charts over there.
Someone forgot to tell Japan that Ninty is DOooOoOoOOooomed!
Anyway, great job Nintendo!
anyone knows what that game at number 3 and 16 are? I have never heard of them
Two Taiko Games in the top 20 this week YEEEEAAAAAHHH!!!! (?)
It's always nice to hear good news that's 3DS related. As we all know, the better 3DS gets, the more developers would be willing to make games for it. Which will make 3DS sell more then more games will be developed. I love that cycle!
Not bad for a 3D port.
The japanese are really digging a couple of american made games. Fancy that.
Nasty, a remake is number 1! ;0
The Japanese sure do love primates!
