Another week, another Kickstarter campaign for a title which might be coming to Nintendo platforms. Thankfully, Rex Rocket is well worth keeping an eye on.
The game is a 2D platformer which needs $6,000 of funding to get made — and it's already bagged over $2,500 of that total with 27 days remaining. Developer Rob Maher has dropped us a line to tell us that if the game receives sufficient funding, it will be coming to the Wii U and 3DS.
January 2014 is the expected launch date. In case you're not excited enough already, here's the description taken from the game's Kickstarter page:
Inspired by the retro glory days of 8-bit games, Rex Rocket is a traditional 2D platformer brought into the 21st century. Paying tribute to classic NES games like Mario, Mega Man, and Metroid, old-school gamers will find Rex Rocket a breath of fresh air, stirring warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia. Rob and Tyler, two passionate indie game devs, have a mission to keep the world of retro games alive. Rex Rocket features one-of-a-kind handmade pixel art, over 100 handcrafted levels connected in an expansive starship filled with a wide variety of puzzles, enemies, hazards and bosses. To top it off, we have an an original, kick-ass chiptunes soundtrack by Saskrotch. Creating this universe and the memorable characters in this game has been a true labor of love.
Will you be chucking a few coins in the direction of this campaign?

Looks really good. Just wish the characters looked less like Lego
Look indies, I LOVE PLATFOMERS! Don't get me wrong! But can guys try and mix it up with other genres? We don't want platformers to go the way of guitar games and speed racers again.
For once I'd like to see one of these kickstarter projects being made specifically for Wii U and 3Ds instead of it being at the end of a list of other goals.
They will have no trouble getting funded. Looks to be a pretty solid Megaman clone. Unfortunately, I suck at Megaman style games. They're just tough as nails. I wish people would make a good Mario clone though, not like there's already a ton of retro platformers to choose from.
@Usagi-san That's my gripe as well. Too many people out there are using the platform as an afterthought. That's why I appreciated Shovel Knight so much.
I'm starting to get sick of retro indie platformers. Hopefully indie devs don't overdo it. I'll be getting this game if it's good.
At least this game's kickstarter goal is pretty low. Surely they can reach that amount of donated money.
@NintendoPro64 there are barely any action platformer kickstarters. mostly metroidvanias.
@ErnisDy
I'm just slightly cynical. It would be nice to see a Wii U release as the "goal" and not just an extra possibility accompanied by uncertainty, that's all.
This looks awesome! Bring it to the 3DS please.
I wonder what happened to Detroit that they needed a "New Detroit." Maybe it was burned down after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup one too many times.
Hi all!
I'm Rob, the pixel artist for Rex Rocket.
@Chiptoon Thanks, bud! I'm working off the NES color palette and I added a hue of yellow in there for skin tone. The palette is pretty limited and I thought this fit the best. I'm also a huge fan of legos and the Simpsons.
@NintendoPro64 Thanks NintendoPro! Depending on the success of Rex Rocket, our next game will most likely be a Zelda-clone called Blossom Tales - http://www.robertmaherdesign.com/town0.png. Google "Blossom Tales" for more screens.
@Jayvir
@Usagi-san So would we! However, Tyler and I just didn't feel comfortable stating that the game would for sure be coming to the Nintendo as Nintendo could choose not to let us publish to their platform. The WiiU is looking pretty amazing for Indies at the moment but Steam / PC still looks better. Tyler and I will focus our efforts on porting to Nintendo and other platforms after the PC release of the game.
Getting Rex Rocket onto any of Nintendo's devices would truly be a dream come true for us and we will do everything in our power to make it happen.
@StarDust Thanks! We're currently just about at the 3/4 mark so things are looking good!
@KnightRider666 Fingers crossed!
@Bulbasaurus Earth, in Rex Rocket, is somewhat comparable to the world of Judge Dredd. Earth has suffered from an extreme catastrophe, the surviving humans have condensed into "super cities." After the discovery of light speed, the Council of Science created a list of all known star systems and planets that could be habitable for humans and named them after the destroyed cities of Earth.
Thanks for the interest guys!
Looks nice, except from the characters.
