Masahiro Sakurai has revealed via Twitter that the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros 4 will appear alongside the Wii U edition at this year's E3 event.
According to a rough translation, he said:
Wii U and 3DS versions — I would like to show you both.
The Wii U version of the game had previously been confirmed for a showing at E3 2013, but this is the first we've heard about the 3DS edition also being displayed.
Sakurai has spoken briefly about the forthcoming game, stating that:
The game system itself is complete, so we don’t want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it. However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all the while keeping the usual frantic game play.
Are you pumped about playing this new instalment on your 3DS?

Sweet as.
I'm not extremely crazy about Smash Bros., but it'll be interesting to see how it's turning out so far.
This will be a great game to get digitally and have on the system memory. I'm probably more excited for the HD version on Wii U though.
Yeah I'm excited for it, hopefully SSB4 will turn out even better than Brawl
I just hope that namco does not derail the game too far away from its predecessors and keep it a "nintendo" game rather than a "Namco X Nintendo" hybrid sort of thing.
Other than that, im very excited about it, even more so for the WiiU version
Excited for the 3DS version. I hope that both versions will have the same characters. I'm not a fan of console exclusivity for these kinds of games as far as the roster, even though they are both Nintendo systems.
@Tsuchinoko
That's my fear also.
What does he mean by 3D?
@Lan: I think he means he doesn't want incorporating the peculiarities of the consoles (3D for the 3DS, the gamepad for the Wii U) to be the top priority. the incorporation will add something, but the game isn't built around that.
I'm looking forward to it of course, the smash series is great. I do hope we'll get it when it's done and perfected, much more than early because quite frankly there's a lot to play on the horizon
Hoping for updated character additions through its life and stage updates through its lifetime. I'd love that.
*edit: and oh, I don't really care about the 3ds version. The wiiU version is where it's at for me.
I'm way more stoked for the 3DS version if its done right it'll be so AWESOME to finally have a true portable version of Smash Bros. - I'm so looking forward to some online battles !
@Lan I think he means it's going to stay a 2D platformer/fighter with 3D effects, rather than making it a 3D game in which you're running into the foreground and background.
Awesome ^_^
Best on the go digital download yet! besides mario kart 7 so far.
Woo-hoo! This E3's gonna be FULL of great games! Oh, and I really hope they keep some of the unlockable characters from Brawl, including Sonic, but giving him some more pizzazz in his moves. I dunno, felt something was missing from his attack style/roster, if that even makes sense. Also, I think another sega character like Knuckles would be good, cause since he's very much the cool fighting character that would fit much better than side characters like Tails or others of the Sonic gang in a SSB game.~ (My opinion everytaco!) XD
This game is gonna be great but I don't really care about the 3DS version of the game since I'm getting it for Wii U.
I also hope the 3DS version has Download play and online play (most likely),so that my friends without the game could battle with me. SO looking forward to a portable Smash Bros., I really think that's where it's gonna be at, with all the 3DS button smashing. XD Plus, I don't even have a Wii U. Doesn't matter, 3DS ROCKS DS HOUSE!!!!~
Can't wait for the 3DS version, SSB on the go!! Download all the way, no need to change carts. Thou I do really hope to keep it fresh and alive they add in DLC threw its life cycle new characters, new maps & music ect, maybe even mini-games
TheSonicdude97: *DA HOUSE!!!!~
Pacman!?
How Does " I would LIKE to show" Translate To "To Be Shown"??
As long as they remove random tripping, I'll be happy.
I cannot wait.
Will there be cross play between the Wii U and 3DS?
Will the 3DS version be free with the Wii U version?
Hey, Sony stole the PSASBR idea from Nintendo, Nintendo might as well steal some ideas back
Very keen to see the Wii U version! I just hope it doesnt suffer visual wise in order to keep the 3DS compatablity.
Bring it
I just want Snake to stay for SSB4. He was my most used character in Brawl with Cap Falcon, Mario and Link behind.
Well it's about damn time we got a portable version:)
Well, it seems nobody else wants to see this happen...but I'd personally like to see a considerable distinction between the Wii U and 3DS versions. I don't want one to just be a port of the other because I was thinking of owning both and I'd like to see some cool cross-platform features.
On a side note, I think one of the things they should focus most on for the 3DS is online play. Since it will be harder to get friends together for local games on a portable system, I think making the robust on it will be essential.
The only real issue is that a Wii U disc has more space than a 3DS cartridge, and something has to fill that room up. I am a crazy fan of the Smash Bros series, and I would really hate it if the 3DS version ended up without something like the Subspace Emissary.
Furthermore, I'm curious to see how the Gamepad will be used.
How the games sell against each other will be something. The 3DS controls seem much more superior to the Wii U's (The 3DS works just like a Gamecube controller). But as I said, the Wii U will probably have more data and something will happen with the Gamepad. Overall I'm definitely in for the 3DS version, I can play anywhere and with comfortable controls rather than having to use a Wiimote or somehow use the Gmaepad.
And what about hints at new games, like the way Pit is in Brawl? With lots of luck, we might see something in the gameplay...
MY BODY IS READY!, im not bothering with the wii u version like Tsuchinoko, im more of a handheld guy and there better not be any special charaters in the different version either like what Tsuchinoko also said, just want equal...unless the 3ds gets more
This time around, I'm gonna avoid Smash Bros. Soho!!!! These games sound TOO DAMN EPIC!!!!!!!! I want to be SURPRISED!!!! I don't wanna know who or what is in the game til I get it!!!!!!
This might be my first two platform game.
You can keep honing your battle skills while on the move!
I just hope they have some kind of a bundle or a discount campaign for those who want both versions.
It's kinda weird, to my knowledge, this will be the first Nintendo game produced for two platforms.
@Moshugan Wario's Woods, Yoshi's Cookie, Mario is Missing, Mario's Time Machine, and Tetris Attack would like to have a word with you.
Also, I'm really excitied for Smash Bros. 4! Playing Project M a bit too much is certainly making the wait harder for me, too. XD
I'm just going to get both. So excited!
I want both, but if I could choose, I would get the Wii U version for sure. To play Smash Bros. in glorious HD is a dream come true!
Did anyone else get a feeling of HYPE when you realized Sakurai said the game is basically completed? That means the game might not be as far off as we thought.
This will be the only game I play for weeks.
I'll get both but am looking forward to the 3DS one more
@Emaan
Hate to burst your bubble, but he said the "game SYSTEM" is complete. I'm thinking that just means the basic structure and balance of how the fighting will work. I'm guessing they still have to produce all of the various art assets such as characters, levels, and items.
@rjejr
lol oh man, anyways they arent going to be the same game in that sense so very unlikely of that happening
@rjejr: Yes, Sakurai mentioned something about possible cross-play.
Given Nintendo's track record, I doubt that one version will be free. Also, it sounds like both versions won't be the same.
As for me, I will get both for sure, because it's Smash
I'm definitely on the train of those who will be getting both!
Being able to play it in HD and on the go? Not missing out on either!
E3 should be pretty good this year. I can't wait!
Cross play?
yeah i heard online wise they will both be competing on the same level. so if your playing WiiU SSB you can play online against people who are playing 3DS SSB. pretty awesome
I'm getting this for sure. It would be cool if they let us buy both at once for a discount through eShop, but we will have to see. I actually kind of hope they leave out 3rd party characters this time, UNLESS they get all the appropriate 1st/2nd party stuff in first. My brother doesn't like ANY fighting games, and guess which one he likes. Haha.
Hold on, Iwata said there will be SCREENSHOTS shown at E3, not TRAILER. Does this mean all we'll see is just a few tantalizing pictures? I mean, it would make sense to have a trailer, but the way he worded it...
I don't care about characters so much as I do gameplay improvements. The first Smash Bros. initially wasn't going to feature nintendo characters = Sakurai sorta just brought them in so the game would sell. While this game is a fanboy's wet dream, the core of the game, for me, is the gameplay.
Im going for Both
I'm going for both, too.
I'm quite excited... and I'm TERRIBLE at fighters. So, there you go.
Since the games are supposed to be cross-play, I do wonder what kind of sacrifices the games will have. The Wii U hardware is very powerful, so what kind of scaling back would it need to do graphically and probably mechanically to work with 3DS. Also, what kind of features that would normally be attached to a handheld game like Streetpass would the 3DS version miss out on like Streetpass or even normally acceptable handheld mechanics.
Smash Bros is my favorite series from Nintendo. Looking forward to see this at E3. I kinda hope that both versions are different from each other.
So basically an amazing game on the Wii U but then a crappy version of it on the 3DS..SSB should stay only for consoles!
@UnrealDan You don't know it'll be crappy, heck some handheld games are better then there console versions
hopefully the reveal a release date for both of them
I swear, if they end up scaling back the Wii U version in terms of visuals/content just because they had to make it compatible with the 3DS, I'm NOT buying it!
The 3DS version is supposedly more focused on single player, IIRC.
They'll be completely different experiences, and that's better for everyone.
Looking forward to both!
Not really sure what he's talking about but ok, bring it on.
I think it's pretty obvious the Wii U version will be better, and I will be picking that version up first. I'll get the 3DS version eventually.
Looks like I have to buy both.. Epic local multiplayer battle on the big screen and an epic online battle in bed on the 3DS. Hopefully it will sync with each other (Like Monster Hunter).
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!! Smash Bro time! Crossing fingers for MegaMan and Pacman :{ Woo! Mustache!
YEAH BUDDY!!!!
Well, that was fast.
I'm still 99.99% that the game won't be released intil at LEAST 2015, but the fact that they have SOMETHING to show at e3 this year is just baffling to me.
All I want to know is which new characters will be in the game and if the game could be crossplay and online. If all that are confirm at E3, then it'll make me a happy gamer.
I WANT
I don't play smash enough to warrant getting two titles - I'll probably just get the WiiU one.
So both games are a lot further then we suspected? Though I don't expect a full blown-out on both titles, more of a teaser I think.
So it seems the 3DS version won't have 3D. I guess that is because of the hectic action, though I am not sure.
So ready for some Smash Bros. on my Wii U
The game is already done? Oh god yes.
@X-Conor-X
Um...no it's not. If it was, we would've seen something on the Nintendo Direct.
@shinpichu In the quotes, it says the game is complete...
Just because a game is complete doesn't mean it needs to be shown..
It's called building anticipation.
I'll probably get it for both lol
@Five-seveN What?! How could you say no to the Blue Blur or his good ol' rival Rad Red (Knuckles)? Are you loco in the coco??~
wow thats good to hear we will get to see something
im also kinda worried if they wont have the same roster of characters for both games D= would be nice to have DLC to it later on though
Well I think its safe to say nintendos E3 is going to be the best
this is so awesome but then im so sad because there is no E3 anywhere near where i live
this is so awesome but then im so sad because there is no E3 anywhere near where i live
SSB alll da way
There's people worried about the 3DS version being horrible and all that, but then I think that it's Nintendo developing as series they've always been in charge of and have made SURE that they're good game-wise...
To that, I'd say people should stop worrying. All three of the first games have been awesome. You'd think people wouldn't have so much distrust for Nintendo.
Sweet Jesus... Can't wait...
Can't wait for it...I really can't!
Wow, this is really awesome! Can't wait to see it on a handheld!
Sweet! I have been waiting a long time for this! Fingers crossed for Zoroark!
I like this news, but I am in the camp of "make the versions different". I am not buying the same game twice, only to have it portable. There should be bigger incentives to get them. I am not against having exclusive characters in each version.
So it will depend on the crossplay capabilities, or if one of the versions releases weeks or even months before the other one. It would make sense to have the portable one first, as Sakurai has had more time to know the hardware and his team has even made a game for it.
Cross-play..... so is that like we have to dress up as Lt Uhura to play these, or am I confusing it with cross-dressing cosplay again?... I have better legs than Nichelle Nichols.....
@Burning_Spear 3d means literally the stereoscopic 3d effect on the 3ds, not 3d in terms of gameplay moving foward and backward on another axis.
we REALLY need new terms for 3d and 3d (being 3d-steroscopic 3d effects, and 3d-not just left and right movement, but forwards and backwards too) people are like "oh a 3d game" and people have to ask "is it a 2d game displayed in 3d? a 3d game displayed in 3d? a 3d game displayed in 2d?" come on people
This years E3 is going to be AWESOME.
Oh no, you know what this means don't you?
Someone out there is going to make more Brawl Taunt flashes.... RUN, RUN AWAY NOW!
@kyurem6298 just watch it live online, then
PIT BETTAH BE BACK WITH MAGNUS !!!!
Huh? What? SSB4 game "complete"? Guess that 2014 release is looking accurate as I'm sure they will spend the rest of 2013 and portions of 2014 polishing it for a late 2014 release. I'm just glad to hear any news.
I cant wait for the 3DS version of this game to come out. A DS smash bros. is way overdue
Please don,t get rid of Luigi!
i wonder if each version has different characters and if they are interchangeable?
I doubt they'll get rid of Luigi, he's one of the veterans and is a very popular and well-known Nintendo character. But I've heard things about Meta Knight being taken out.....
I'm so ready for this game
I dunno about you guys, but I think some of the magic will be lost in the portable version. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting it and I'll play the heck out of it, but it won't be the ultimate couch game anymore. Maybe some of you DO sit around with your friends and their respective 3DSs and play multiplayer games a lot...but I certainly don't get to that often. Hopefully they will anticipate this and really beef up the online play, even though that's nowhere near as great as actually couch multiplayer.
Also, put Magnus in the game, goshdernnit.
@Tsuchinoko same here cuz im going to only have the 3ds for it
somewhere i saw it will be released november 12 2015
DETAILS cant wait for cross platform connectivity between 3ds and wii u plus online play dont care that much about wii u version
There should N64 1P stages that can be playable in any mode. Metal Crystal, make that stage bigger so 4 players can fit there, Duel Zone where Fighting Polygons fight, and Final Destination with a looping background change. We need new Mother and F-Zero characters in that game.
