If you're a non-North American fan of American football, you might want to fling a coloured flag in EA's direction: the Wii U version of Madden NFL 13 is only being released in North America.
Madden NFL 13 on Wii U was officially confirmed last night at EA's Summer Showcase, scheduled for release at the console's launch. However, it was only in a later EA Sports press release that details of the restricted release came out. As far as we can tell, other home console versions of the game will still touchdown outside of North America.
The first Wii U screens have also got into formation; you can see them in our media album below.
How do you feel about the limited launch of Madden NFL 13 on Wii U?
EA SPORTS UNVEILS FIFA 13 AND MADDEN NFL 13
New Games Feature Award-winning Gameplay, HD Graphics And New Ways To Play
Guildford, UK. – August 2, 2012 – Electronic Arts Inc. today announced that EA SPORTS™ is developing its two most popular sports videogames—FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13— for Nintendo Wii U™. Featuring award-winning gameplay, HD graphics and new ways to play, FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 promise to be incredibly innovative football games on the Wii U, and they will be in stores around the world when the new console launches.“We challenged our teams to develop innovations designed specifically for the Wii U, and to create new ways to play that would bring players of all abilities together,” said Andrew Wilson, Head of EA SPORTS. “Our teams have truly delivered creative new football experiences with FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 for the Wii U.”
In development at EA Canada, FIFA 13 features three new ways to play that bring players of all abilities together. Families can play together in Co-op Mode, where one player manages and up to four others play. Team Management Control features interactive radar to send players on supporting runs, attacking or defensive, and touch screen control to change tactics, formations or subs on the fly. Experience the thrill of managing your favorite football club in Manage Match, directing players from the sidelines and even giving half-time talks. View a statistical analysis of the match and any player at any time, enabling you to make informed decisions. Plus, connect and interact with friends like no other FIFA title. See your friends online and invite them to play, or message them in real time using touch screen typing. FIFA 13 features innovations utilizing the Wii U GamePad™ that immerse players in the action on the pitch. Gamers can lift and look through the GamePad touch screen to aim the ball on set pieces and penalty kicks, then put the perfect curve on a shot and let it fly. Shake the GamePad to activate Touch Screen Shooting, removing the element of ‘hit and hope’, and allowing for pinpoint accuracy.
Madden NFL 13 on the Wii U delivers the most authentic NFL experience ever on a Nintendo platform, including core gameplay new to the franchise this year, beautiful HD graphics, the newest depth and career modes, and all-new touchscreen features exclusive to the Wii U. With the all-new Connected Careers mode, you can build your own legacy as a player or a coach, or relive the glory of an all-time legend. Plus, the new CBS commentary team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms make every game feel like an authentic NFL broadcast, as they call the action from the 3D booth. Get immersed into every game with features exclusive to the Wii U, including streamlined playcalling, pre-snap adjustments and personnel management - all directly from the innovative Wii U Gamepad touchscreen. Madden NFL 13 on the Wii U brings next generation innovation, gameplay, and graphics straight to your living room like never before.
Madden NFL 13 will be available on Nintendo Wii U in North America only.

Yay for NA exclusive!
The obvious "reading between the lines" is that the Wii U isn't being released early enough in other countries for there to be enough of them in peoples households to justify releasing this.
And besides, as long as the rest of the world gets FIFA do they care about Madden?
All of my friends don't give a dam about Madden so yeah... I don't think many Europeans care about American Football in the first place.
I figure the rest of the world doesn't really care about football anyways.
Hm...so EA has 3 games available for release when the Wii U comes out? I can see FIFA helping the console's sales in UK.
Good.
Let America keep it.
Our Wii U store shelves will look better without it.
I don't see EU or Japan playing a Madden game honestly. FIFA, maybe.
@BenAV
Ouch dude... but I gotta say, you haven't lived until you've been to a Packers game at Lambeau in Green Bay, WI.
Might have to get this too, might have to give up eating for a few weeks to pay for all these games coming out at the same time.
err...North America is USA and Canada, just pointing that out to the article writer (he saids North America, than at the end of the first paragraph saids USA, which is it? all of north america or just usa?????)
In all honesty, I don't care about this game, but seems stupid to not release it anywhere else too, but than again I see no reason for FIFA 2012 to come to north america (we'll never like soccer like europe does, NEVER) but that is, for whatever reason...
Still waiting on a great madden to be released for 3ds....
I'm honestly suprise any american football game would actually be published outside of NA....
I might actually get this later on when the price goes down... prefer baseball and basketball but I'm happy a nintendo console is actually getting good sports games again...
@Treverend
You betcha. Live a few miles from Lambeau.
@hydeks I second that. Too many people on this site use terms like NA, USA, and America interchangeably. Mike, can you please specify for our Canadian friends what is going on with this game? You have conflicting information and I think you should correct it.
I live in America so that's okay.
As much as I like Madden, it would be nice if some other companies could make a football game instead of just EA. As far as it being available only for NA, it's a shame as football is a awesome sport!
My bad, it's North America as a whole according to the press release. Corrected.
I'm in America so I'm happy
Has madden ever been released outside of the USA? Since it is American football, I thought the game would be sold just here. I don't imagine it selling too well in other countries because most people from there don't care about it.
@Kid3dizzy of course fifa. soccer's a world sport.
Well in Europe football is only one...most people dont even know how this game is played.
What's the difference between Football, and Football?
Im not a fan of the NFL but i love the CFL, wish EA would make us canadians a canadian football game. I wish i could play as the Winnipeg blue bombers or the Montreal Alouettes, please EA show canada some love.
Anyone else see the ESPN interview with EA Sports? The Wii U version won't have the new physics engine and will be missing two play modes.
lol yay it is confusing for us Canadians when they North America but than say USA, America= USA, North America is Canada and USA ^-^ All good, though, we screw up alot on Europian stuff lol.
Thanks for the fix up though! Appreciate it
@A-Hungry-Banker The comma after the last L in football,
@hydeks Soccer is certainly a far 5th place in popularity among American team sports, but it's still a lot more popular here than American football is in Europe. Interestingly, youth soccer leagues are actually pretty popular here, but kids would much rather play the sport than watch professional soccer on TV.
as long as the GamePad--or Wii U Classic controller give me GOOD controls/gameplay--just like GC controls--I'll get it....I still hate ALL the EA Sports games on Wii--cause I HATE the Wiimote Waggle
Just don't make it as crappy as Madden 3DS
Awesome! Now if EA will just keep FIFA games EU exclusive.
You'd think that nowadays they could at least make it downloadable in American English.
Anyway, i hope the Wii U is region free so this won't become much of a problem.
Why is it that no other countries reall play american footbal besides us! Such an amazing and exciting game!
