Update: Nintendo has denied the rumour.
Japanese newspaper Nikkei — which has proven right about Nintendo rumours on many occasions — is reporting we'll see a new 3DS model announced tomorrow.
The paper claims we'll see a 3DS redesign boasting a 4.3 inch screen, approximately 1.5 times larger than the current machine. Nikkei claims we could see the machine released as early as this summer.
Do you think we'll see a big 3DS tomorrow?

3 words for this. What. The. ****.
I totally called that. Just saiyan.
Bigger? Odd rumour though I guess they did it before with the DSi XL. Would expect one with a second slide pad more than a larger screen though.
Well, there has been complains about the console being small and hurting some peoples hands... Could hapen. It's not a major redesign either, so it wouldn't piss off early adopters since they aren't missing out on alot.
...So, like I said about them saying this wouldn't happen a while back....That's what they WANT you to think.
I definitely would not try to fit a handheld into my purse bigger than the current 3DS, this one is even pushing it... lol Sorry Nintendo, I have most versions of the regular DS and GBA, but not this time.
Gonna buy that one if its true. I was waiting for this.
I would be slightly disappointed, because I love a handheld with big screens.
bigger 3DS sounds great and all, but wouldn't my circle pad pro become useless. I highly doubt they would add the additional buttons on the bigger 3DS. I would actually love a bigger model because I cramp very easily because of the small 3DS
not going to happen.
Unless it comes with a second circle pad I'm not "Upgrading".
darn...the people who get systems early, always miss out of the good stuff... I wonder if I could transfer everything over to a new one without any issues..
Wait....what¿? i really want a bigger 3D screen... but 1.5 times larger is too much
I'm sure it'll have the extra circle pad on the right hand side, too, with the screen directly in the middle as it should be. Dang you, N.
Well considering they did this for the DS, its not really surprising guys.
I doubt Nintendo will reveal a bigger 3DS, but I want one. I don't care if it's bigger really, just that it has the Circle Pad Pro built in, has better battery life, a dedicated screenshot button, and enough graphical processing power so games won't lag in 3D. Nintendo mentioned the Wii U has a dedicated screenshot ability, so that might not be too far off.
3.5 inches vs 4.3 inches. normally i wouldnt consider it but its 3d screen we are talking about.. I really hope they wont release it yet thou. they said there wont be a new model for years.
Yeah right, its only been a year since the original 3ds came out.
If you love your current 3DS then don't buy it. It's for people like me that want a larger screen, I find it hard to enjoy the current model because of the screen size.
The screen size has never bothered me. The one thing that makes the 3DS hard to enjoy is the low battery life. A bigger screen would only make the battery go even faster. They need to focus on the battery first and then later they can change anything they want.
Might be true, wouldn't be surprised. Although if they did announce a bigger 3DS tomorrow, I would imagine that it would also have the second circle pad already built in. I personally would not shell out another $250 for basically what i already have. I love my compact 3DS and don't really mind the Circle Pad Pro that i already have. I'll wait till next years redesign and then might consider upgrading.
A new version so soon?
It would be too early ofcourse.. Although with a better battery and second circle pad build i might consider buying it..
I think they are refering to the Wii u.
I heard there were also getting a vita 3d
Sounds good to me. As long as they include BOTH sliders and four shoulder buttons I'll be buying this day 1. Plus, I can keep all of my settings from my current 3DS by using the system transfer tool. Hoping for a shiny dark green.
They're bluffing.
I'm so mad about this. Who would want a BIGGER 3DS? Especially so soon! It really gets me mad that they're wasting time building unnecessary stuff like this when they could be making the 3DS we have now better. There's hardly anything out for it!
they better not. otherwise, i'll destroy every iwata poster in my room... even if they did, i'd be pissed if it didn't have a second C-pad built in.
@Kyloctopus no, they showed the new U pad and did a pic comparison of the prototype and and final concept. The controller was wider and different button layout but the screen stayed the same.
If Nintendo ends up doing this, we old 3DS users better get some freebies.
This is a lie. A dumb rumour. I think they are mistaking the 3ds for the wii u.
We'll just have to wait and see. My cards are on no redesign/size change.
Not getting one unless it has 2 circle pads. I don't really care about the size.
Bigger screen means StreetPass Fail! I wear pants that actually fit and a bigger 3DS means its staying at home.
Oh boy! I was hoping for a redesign. I get tired of my game machine designs very quickly so something fresh would be great! I hope the screen is really huge, second Circle Pad, dramatically longer battery, better stylus placement, and no freaking lines on my top screen when the system is closed forcing me to put a cloth in between the system!
No way. The first 3DS is selling pretty good right now and announcing an improved version now would seriously undermine that momentum. Aint gonna happen this year.
I hope not given I just bought my siblings 3DS consoles for their birthdays. Not that I didn't realise the possibility was there, but still...
While it wouldn't be unprecedented, I'd be a little surprised. Particularly since the CCP would be incompatible with it.
That is, of course, unless the larger model has 2 circle pads built in...
Don't. Give. A. Stuff.
Unless they redesign it like DSi, I won't be kicking myself in the leg.
i thought the point of a portable handheld was so that you could take it everywhere. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BRING THIS WITH ME IF IT WONT FIT IN MY POCKET? the dsiXL is already a piece of crap. the DSi has a crappy engine, and all the graphics look like crud. why would anyone want that on a bigger screen. even with the pixelated games on the DS, the bits are all blurry. aint no way will i ever set a finger on this.
I'l buy a bigger 3DS, a 3DS XL if you will
@Captain_Hookey ur talking about the DS, where talking about the 3DS, two different systems
NO! I do not want to buy another one. I love my 3DS and I don't want to spend another £200 on it.
I wonder if this means that when you switch Gameboy and Gameboy Colour games to their native resolution they'll be actually big enough to see without using a magnifying glass.
@hydeks
i dont care. i got my point across. portable systems like the 3DS should be small. if they're big, then they can't go anywhere.
There is no way I'm going to buy this right away. I'm already saving for the Wii U, and this will not fit into the budget for a while. I probably won't buy it period unless it has a built in circle pad pro and an HD screen. I.e., I probably won't be buying this at all if it happens.
Oh HELL NO ! That's not fair to all of us that already have a 3DS ! Come on now! I'm gonna be pissed if it's true ... t(-.-t)
3DDS
Why would anyone be angry about a niche XL model? It's just an alternative either way, and the current "slim" model will continue to be primary.
@Captain_Hookey: "Crappy engine"? What on Earth are you talking about?
Original 3DS Ambassador program?
Maybe we can all get a free CPP mailed to us from Club Nintendo and then a free game or two.
i might buy this if i can transport all my games and mii plaza data to the other ds
at least this might help the sells.....right?
Matte texture please.
Did ya hear that, Non-Specific Action Figure?!?
...or they could just let you play your 3DS games on the Wii U. ...and for download-able titles they could use a sign-in/out method.
If this system is going to...
-Improve battery life
-Provide complete stability (sometimes when I press a button on my 3DS, it turns off instantly and my date and time gets reset to 1/1/2011 and 0:00 (12:00 am), which is annoying)
...then I'm in.
We can always do the 3DS System transfer to another 3DS! So no worring about losing data! So theres going to be a 3DS XL. The bigger the better!
@Nintendude789 It only transfer pics, music, and any DSi or DSXl data. No downloadable games will be transfer.
@Hyperstar96 do u think the resolution is bad already???
a redesign?! Yay!... -.-
Well, it does make sense. If they were planning on putting a second circle pad on the device, it would be logical to enlarge the screen along with the device to accommodate the new addition. Unfortunately for me, I will more than likely fork over the cash for the new version.
I'm not sure it's going to happen because the 3D screen is pretty specialized to start making it in two sizes. I would probably buy it though just to play my games on the big screen, even though it would be terrible for portability/streetpassing.
@Hyperstar96 Resolution will be the same. You're confusing this with pixel density. Personally, I take a screen with lower pixel density over one I have to squint at any day. A 3DS is already difficult to carry compared to everybody's favorite mobile general computing platform of choice: smartphones. Nothing Nintendo do will turn the 3DS into a pocket device, so they might as well make it actually ergonomic by increasing the size, so a grown ups hands won't cramp after 15 minutes of Mario Kart. Larger size also means a larger battery fits in. It wouldn't hurt the 3DS, if its battery life wasn't situated between "laughable" and "poor". Plus, on a larger device Nintendo might incorporate the second analogue slider and shoulder buttons. The ones they forgot their device might need, until 3rd parties apparently reminded them and they had to release that embarrassing circle pad pro.
Yes, I'm sure many people want that.
False rumor. because the if it is bigger the sweet spot will be farer away than before and the 3d efect will not work as well!!
NOPE! It's too soon. Also, I won't be getting it. I just plastered my 3DS with Majora's Mask stickers.
if there is going to be a new nintendo 3ds ,im not getting it eney time soon.Because i am happy with my original 3ds system.
This is sooooo not happening. A new 3ds could eat away sales from the Wii U this fall. Also, they are finally making a profit again on the 3ds, and they have sold a lot of copies in a very short period of time. Why would they mess with the current swell in sales? Just lots of 3DS games and more sales of the normal 3DS this fall. I don't even think we will see another price drop for at least 2 years.
It will probably happen.
DS(2004)->DSL(2006)->DSi(2008)->DSiXL(2010)
@18 EXACTLY the screen is way to small to enjoy properly and fully appreciate the graphics/experience.
Count me in if it happens
already got a 3DS since launch
no need for the circlepadpro or a bigger screen.
better battery would be nice though!
@Hyperstar96 Yes i kno that, I didnt see your comment til after i posted the first one.
if they don't put a second slider pad (if they could put joysticks instead that would be better) then that would be stupid.
well i love the change (if its true) but ill rather get it at an awesome color or a nice bundle maybe the next Zelda on the system
Only a year? 1.5X bigger? Never heard of the source?
Are they trying to kill the 3DS? I'd be pissed if I already had a 3DS. It'll be good for me, though since I still need to get one.
So what is it going to be like a 3DS XL?
WTF?? They better not,i just bought my regular 3DS and now this? Probably just a rumor anyway.
And plus they said that they wasn't going to redesign the 3DS no time soon.
So soon? What the hell? I hope this is just a rumour because if it's true that'll be an annoying kick in the nuts!
What the butts? This better be false.
@Squirtodile Nikkei is a big Japanese newspaper and generally very reliable.
Will not be out until the Wii U has launched and gained ground... I give the 3DS "XL" until this time NEXT year, period.
I bloody well hope not!
This year they should focus on the Wii U and the 3DS.
Maybe next yeah,hey?
Meh, good for those who prefer bigger screens - but if it's just a 3DS XL, I'm not interested - I carry mine around and play it mostly on the train. If they have a regular sized 3DS with a second circle pad, I could see having to cave and buy one when a game comes out that I want that forces me to use dual analog control.
Gosh Nintendo, they better not.
Unless it comes with the second circle pad built into it I wont buy it. I am not interested in it just because they made it bigger.
Man they just want more money
If there was a "3DS XL," it will probably just be bigger, rather than a complete redesign. If it was a complete redesign, well than Nintendo would lose about 16 million fans.
Derp.
I hope it's not going to happen, but if a 3DS XL is announced it better have some other upgrades than just the size. I love my 3DS as it is, and I wasn't planning on buying a new one the next months, unless it's an amazing upgraded 3DS.
This is why they have been releasing all the info about the patents.
I'm really not a fan of the movement to make portable consoles bigger and less, you know, portable.
Bigger isn't always better.
Already proven false.

Another link, just for fun: http://andriasang.com/con1b5/nintendo_nikkei_denial/
Who would want a bigger 3DS? All it is is just a bigger System than the one we all have now. It doesn't really make the bigger one any cooler.
@Shadowluigi2 i thought that way about the dsiXL, and then i held someone's xl in my hands and DEAR GOD it was FANTASMICAL
so euphoric, will definitely get this if its true
Confirmed fake: http://nintendo3dsblog.com/
Good to hear that it's confirmed to be fake.
A bigger 3DS would be horrible! D:
I don't see what would be so bad about a bigger 3DS. I liked the DSi XL and hardly ever picked up my DS lite after buying one.
I hope they do eventually have a 3DS with a bigger screen, that or make something equivalent to the "super gameboy" so I can play my VC games on a TV screen. I guess the latter is pretty unlikely though.
Dang you, Nintendo!
So, you announce it, then you say it's a hoax. Then you say its not. Then someone posts a minute ago that it IS a fake. I'm dizzy. Can someone verify their sources a little better here? lol jk i love all the work you guys here at NL do, so don't stop
It maybe difficult to have a bigger 3DS fit in someone's pocket to pick up StreetPass signals. This would be one of the cons of a 3DS with a bigger size.
In the words of Lex Luthor.......WROOOOOONG!!!!
They will eventually release a major 3DS hardware revision. Every Nintendo portable console released has had multiple design changes. They also did a redesigned NES and SNES.
Game Boy Phat
Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy Advance XP
GBA Micro
DS Phat
DS Lite
DSi
DSi XL
3DS
???
Shut up and take my money. I'd love it to have better battery life, a second slide pad and more space for downloads, but I already have my pre-order money ready.
To be honest, I'd welcome this if it were true.
I have poor eyesight, and larger screens help tremendously. My fiancee and I have a DSI XL along with our 3DSes and it's an absolute dream when playing ds games. We both have large pockets so the larger size is not an issue.
I tried playing Thor: God Of Thunder on my 3DS and found myself wishing for the XL's larger screens.
So...3DS XL, you say? BRING IT ON!!! lol
Cool! Have been waiting to buy one till they get bigger, this summer it seems like the wright moment to buy one. Awesome news.
For me the size of the screen is like a joke, but maybe when your small yourself its not really a problem.
@Big_Al1 It looks like some reports speaking about the truth to this reveal there will be NO second circle pad if this thing hits the market.
too soon
@Marioman64
I've also owned a DSiXL, It was big.. but not all that Impressive.
If only they knew...
Nintendo is a liar.
@Oddy Always trust Nikkei.
