Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I seems all but a distant memory now, but SEGA is ready to revitalise your nostalgia for 2D Sonic games by officially revealing Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II tomorrow.
Gamespot will have the exclusive teaser trailer tomorrow, with SEGA brand manager Ken Balough keen to emphasise its teaser-y nature; don't expect a full-on information blowout, but we should hopefully get confirmation of its formats at least.
And yes, SEGA did just announce a teaser with a tease.

hmm, cool
i want this game!!! 2D old school Sonic, ....FTW!!!
Very nice
Sounds great. I already have Sonic 4 Episode I in my PS3 so i like to know what episode 2 will be like.
I thought that episode 1 was good (the physics and constant zoom was annoying though) but I am really disliking the 'episodes'.
It's just a quick way to cash in, I'll be the compilation if it's ever released.
...who am I kidding, I'll still buy them.
I've been wanting a good Sonic fix lately. Sonic Generations for the 3DS is pretty good. (though the console versions look a little better...wish I had City Escape...). I'm hoping for Sonic and Tails in this one, both playable too. In my opinion anyway.
I was wondering about this the other day actually. Sweet, can't complain, although the first "episode" was pretty pricey for what you got...
I actually bought the first game by mistake. I cried knowing that I wasted $15. I couldn't believe it. I just wanted to see the price or something, and clicked the wrong button. Horrific experience... Still haven't downloaded the actual game from the Wiiware shop after buying it. Really didn't want to. Oh well. Should give it a go sometime I guess. But $15. Right there. Out of the window.
@stromboli - might as well play it now that you've paid for it anyway! You might actually enjoy it!
The only thing is, why did it take so long to come out with an episode 2?? The first one was pretty short anyway. Not bad though.
@stromboli: I had the same experience with Mario Kart 64 when I was comparing file size space for N64 Virtual Console games. I even contacted Nintendo about it and they coudln't/wouldn't do anything. Well, I got the entire Monkey Island series (except episode one) for free, so I guess it wasn't too-too bad. Still bugs me to this day, though.
Sonic 4 Ep. 1 was a little too fast/chaotic and much too short. Depending on improvements, if any, I'll probably save up to buy Generations. Or skip em' both and buy Sonic CD for $3 on my iPhone. The app store has had so many wonderful Sonic games lately...
Well it's about time!
I honestly thought they abandoned this project.
Here's hoping they listened to the complaints about Episode 1
I hate episodic games. I just want the whole game in one piece please.
/waits for a retail release on the 3DS.
Where's my episode 3 and 4?
Excited!
I'm glad to see that there are others that get annoyed by game "episodes". Just release the whole game!
I would really like to know on which systems the game will be released on. Are there versions planned for Atari ST, Amiga, Amstrad CPC and Sinclair ZX81? Oh, come on Ken Balough. Don't tease us, tell us!
@5. Well at 1500 points on wii 3 episodes is about the price of a new game.
It's crazy that I thought of Sonic 4 Episode 1 & 2 yesterday.
Please Sonic Team... some decent level design for this one! Episode 1 was terrible - you'd be encouraged to build up speed and then punished for doing so for speeding off the edge to your doom in many cases making it very much trial & error for most of the levels. End bosses section was lazy too. I want something resembling Sonic 3 & Knuckles pleases!!
@pixelman
Except, sonic 4 episode 1 was a complete game in every sense of the word.
They might as well be calling this one sonic the hedgehog 5, it's all semantics. It's going to be a different game to episode 1 in the same way sonic 2 is a different game to sonic 1
It'd be nice if the episodes could lock together into one big game the same way Sonic 3 & Knuckles do.
@LinkstrikesBack
The Hell is was. It only had four worlds. That's a fraction of any of the classic or 2D games.
major cool dudes!
awesome!
I remember back when Sonic 4 was a good idea.
Episodic releases and bad execution has made it into a terrible one though
If this is anything like the first episode I will just wait for it to go on sale. I still need to pick up Generations anyway.
cool I hope Ep 2 is a WW game and not a Wii U Ware game, because HD sonic looks hideous
Meh people can whine, whatevz. Been waiting for his game for a while, can't wait.
Although I admit I hope there's better physics. That's really all the game needs to be amazing. They've had a year and a half to fix it so far...
@22 - No, no, no, of course not.
A week after that. :3
As long as Sonic no longer accelerates like a tank, I'll definitely be getting Part 2.
@23, 25 No, it wasn't a complete game, but it wasn't too short, either. It has a cliffhanger plot twist after you collect all the Chaos Emeralds. As for length, don't forget that each Zone has 3 Acts before each boss fight instead of just 2 Acts, plus the Final Zone. That actually makes it a little longer than Sonic 3. This is an especially appropriate comparison when you consider that Sonic 4 is actually following nicely in the footsteps of Sonic 3. Sonic 3 was actually the first episodic Sonic game, where the game of that title was actually just Episode 1, while Sonic and Knuckles was Episode 2. Hopefully, there will be bonus content exclusive to owners of both episodes of Sonic 4 to really drive the comparison home.
I miss old Sonic. He was the coolest hedgehog ever. He never talked, only hung out with Tails and Knuckles, never did homing attacks, and had a nice rounded tummy to put it all together. Now all he does is say, "I'm going to help my friends!" and "That was tight!" and "That was rad!" and weird stuff like that. Old Sonic's games were fun and simple. Nowadays, all of it is confusing and odd. If Sega wants to make good games, they should make Sonic act more like he did before and talk less. Also, no more Rogue the bat, Big the Cat, or Silver the Time Traveling Hedgehog. That would make me happy but some would disagree.
I hope its better than episode I.
Make the Physics like Sonic Generations, or better...that's ALL I want. Better level design and Tails being playable wouldn't hurt too.
I was just wondering about this yesterday.
Oh well, I won't be getting this immediately. I want to see how Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (all episodes) pans out before making any decisions.
That will be awesome!Sonic 4 Episode 2 might be really good!
please tell me that we can play as tails it irks me when sonic team makes him be unplayable
@Pocketim, hmmm- I do recall playing Mario Bros Wii. I borrowed in from a friend for a day because I didn't want to buy it due to the fact that it strongly resembled the DS version that I already had. All I remember was making it to the Desert Stage in like World 2 and messing up. This was followed by much swearing as I could not get passed the level for some reason. It should of been easy cause it was only World 2 but I kept messing up. I suppose your reasoning makes sense. I would get this game if I had a large quantity of points because I greatly enjoyed Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 and this is similar. I have been let down by Sonic many times so I no longer respect his modern character. Secret Rings I enjoyed, Unleashed I hated, along with me hating the Dark Brotherhood. Maybe it is the childish personalities of the characters or the incredibly complicated plot that involves robots and ultimate lifeforms and police working bats and crocodiles. The reason Mario sells so well is because he is simple. He is a jolly plumber that enjoys a good mushroom and never lets the friendly princess down. He is respectable and I always know his games are going to make me happy. This is why I thought Winter Olympic Games was going to be good- Mario was in it. Once I played through it, I realized that it was simply terrible. Then I figured out it was purely made by SEGA and that explained everything. I don't know where I'm going with this but Sonic is getting worse and he'll soon drive his followers into down spiraling depression.
Please make new and original bosses Sega. Please...
I really hope this game comes out for the 3DS.
Can't wait to wake up!
Yay! Sonic 4: Episode I was truly awesome & have been fervently waiting the next installment! Hopefully the 'Teaser Trailer' means the game is releasing very soon Hopefully on WiiWare again!
Cant wait 4 this to come out, the first episode was great. I'm almost certain this will b out for wiiware, this is all suppose 2b 1 game, so it would make more sense to release all the episodes on the same platform. I guess I need 2 hurry and finish sonic colors then play episode 1 over again before this comes out.
Honestly I hope that there are two more episodes just like the genesis, tails and knuckles become playable characters(mostly knuckles), and for the entire sonic 4 saga to come to the 3DS=) PS 1st post
@Incognito_D you're right. Hopefully!
@MasterGraveheart exactly. it's something that can't happen in retail.. well maybe with a "1 click amazon", but they let you cancel too.
Can't wait
I can't wait until Sonic games finally stop being made. Never had fun with a single one, and I did try. oh wait, I kinda liked the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure but that was it.
the 2d stuff always promised some kind of high speed collecting/running thing that just didn't work very well for me, always had you bump into something, loose your rings or else miss things that you have to go back for when you do get speed; no consistency in the goals. And the early Sega music drives me crazy, it's so bad.
All the rabid sonic fans have been pining for a good sequel for 10+ years and it never happened. If you like the 1st and 2nd one in your youth (which I didn't but I understand the appeal) just stop hoping. It hasn't been done again and it's clear that it never will.
Can't wait! I LOVED Episode I.
@Contrary As long as the dialogue isn't too childish (**cough** Sonic Colors), there's a reason Sonic talks like that. His character was originally designed to appeal to fans of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series, and his voice and character in his two early 90's cartoon series only further cemented that notion.
@Ren Maybe you should try the Sonic Rush games, as they turn 2D Sonic into more of a race like you seem to prefer. Most Sonic fans (myself included), however, think 2D Sonic works best when its a mix of high-speed thrills and slower 2D platforming along with the excellent level design of the Genesis games that rarely had you running blindly into a trap or enemy that you couldn't reasonably avoid.
And its not coming to wii, 3DS or PC.
Fun!
What the heck??! I just saw the trailer.
No Nintendo releases, what so ever. How stupid is that? All I own is Nintendo systems for one. That's bull.
@Pocketim
Oh how wrong you are. There are so many examples of retro-style games that do it right in today's world:
Mega Man 9
Mega Man 10
DKC Returns
Kirby Returns to Dreamland.
NSMB Wii (that was actually a very memorable game for me, and I prefer it over 3D Mario)
No Wii version?! So we're all left with an incomplete game then...
Just great! Might as well pull Episode 1 from the Wii Shop, since it's absolutely worthless now.
@54 I know !! i have the exact same problem! how stupid is it that its not going to be on nintendo consoles. I am a huge sonic fan but all i have is Nintendo Consoles!!
@Pocketim (57.):
I beg to differ. You might be right about games like Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth, Contra ReBirth, Sonic 4: Ep. 1 and Adventure Island: The Beginning. While these games (especially the former two) were nice and captured most of the typical flair of their franchise I felt there was somewhat missing to make them cult classics. But to me they were at least good enough to not harm their respective series.
It was different with Mega Man 9, Contra 4, Gunstar Future Heroes and Metal Slug 7. Their gameplay is near perfect and cannot really be enhanced by anything imo.
In the case of MM9 I guess it was that for a long time there hadn’t been a game like this. It was an unexpected return. A return to form since many people believe the series has gradually gotten worse after MM2. MM10 came too soon after it so it didn’t feel so special anymore. Which is a shame since with the reception of MM9 they could have made the series go strong again.
While Gunstar Future Heroes, Contra 4 and Metal Slug 7 were also returns after a long hiatus I guess I also give them a bonus for being portable. They may not bring many new things to the table but I think these games didn’t harm the reputation of the respective series. It may even have improved.
And that’s the point where games like DKC Returns, NSMB Wii and Kirby Mass Attack kick in. These games imo all achieved stuff that could not be done on the SNES.
DKCR’s detailed environments and the blow-mechanics paired with a less static, more action-oriented presentation and the completely new barrel riding levels made this one feel different enough from its predecessors. It is a very good foundation for future titles.
NSMBW’s multiplayer let platforming-aces really help less talented players this time. (In SMW when you were no good in a level you could only hope the other player would finish it, here you can literally work together.) That aside I think the Wii controls were used quite well and again gave it something less static that couldn’t be done before. I’m sure i wouldn’t have been as hyped for Galaxy 2 if it wasn’t for NSMBWii.
And Kirby Mass Attack while touch-controlled feels like a slightly evoluted SNES game to me. And I mean that in a good way.
To me 2D platforming is in the best state it ever was since the SNES days. Maybe it’s even better today. I mean heck, I haven’t even touched Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Aliens: Infestation, Mighty Switch Force and Rayman Origins yet and I am quite sure they’ll be great.
@BulbasaurusRex (52.): I didn’t like Sonic talking before Wii’s Colors. To my own surprise i found him really entertaining there. (Haven’t watched any cartoons with him though.)
@Pocketim: Guess we just have a different opinion then. I just couldn't help but write another love letter to the state 2D gaming is in at the moment. As you surely know it's hard to completely understand others when you really like something and i thought maybe i could help you see it from another pespective.
In the end none of us is right anyway since it's only the sales numbers that count.
