It's another simultaneous release on the 3DS Virtual Console this week, as Nintendo of America has confirmed Metroid II: Return of Samus is coming to the eShop on Thursday.
Set before Super Metroid, Metroid II is — as surely everybody knows — completely devoid of Space Pirates, despite the official Nintendo press release stating:
On Nov. 24, Nintendo will release the original 2D version of Metroid™ II: Return of Samus™. This Game Boy™ classic has intergalactic bounty hunter Samus™ Aran battling Space Pirates as she seeks to destroy Metroids on SR388. The game lays the foundation for the smash hit Super Metroid™.
Talk about a rookie error.
We'll have a full review shortly after the game's made available on the 3DS eShop.

awesome
totally awesome
Technically there's no space pirates in this game
@ennan Official Nintendo description says:
Yes but there are still no space pirates in the game. Just metroids. One of my all-time favorites!
Never played this before, will be buying on Thursday.
I CANNOT wait for this.
If Nintendo says there are space pirates...there must be space pirates!
Awesome! This is the Gameboy game I've been waiting for on VC since I never got to play it as a kid.
Sweet!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ME
Aww yeah. Loading this up thursday morning so 8 can have something to play on while at thankgiving dinner.
YAY!!
/me will be playing Skyward Sword while others eat turkey and play this game
AWsome! wont be able to get it till christmas though since i dont have a 3ds yet. Cheers for 2d metroid games. (i dont like the prime series). CLASSICS RULE!
@James
From the Metroid II wiki:(http://metroid.wikia.com/wiki/Metroid_II:_Return_of_Samus)
"Metroid II: Return of Samus is one of three Metroid games without Ridley, the other two being Metroid Prime Hunters and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. It is also the only game in the series to not have any Space Pirates in it at all."
I played this as a kid, the space pirates only had a "operation" going on there, hence the metroids all flying about evolving all over the joint! Oh well whatever. Its not like space pirates were ever a solid sell point anyway!
The music in this game is pretty awesome!
At this point in the series, the space pirates were more of a thing that was referenced rather than seen. The original Metroid didn't contain any of them either aside from Ridley and I guess maybe Kraid, but they were definitely a part of the game. The classic mantis-looking pirates didn't actually appear in person in the games till Super Metroid.
Can't wait for this one!
VVVVVV and NightSky, two amazing games I already own, or this and Kirby, two amazing games I don't? D:
Awesome game though I never beat it as a kid. I will definitely need to get this original cart for my Metroid collection and finally beat it.
Yes! This holds a dear place in my heart from way back. I remember being so blown away by the structure and challenge of this game, on a system I didn't know could deliver such deep, solid games. I don't think I even finished it the first time, it's very hard.
I haven't tried any of the GB games on 3DS yet, though, can anyone attest to how they look on the screen? They gameboy screen made things a chore to look at, I almost can't imagine what it would look like properly lit.
@23 Ren: Playing these games on the 3DS is like night and day. There is no motion blur that the original Brick Gameboy had, and of course having a back light makes a world of difference also. My only complaint would be the lack of Super Gameboy support.
See, this is why I love you guys.
Article updated with my love and thanks to you all!
Yes, it's finally here
tear I'm just so happy
Donde estas Wario Land?
Oh, and I'd add this to my wishlist
@James - description is wrong. No space pirates in this game. They are recovering from having their ass handed to them in Metroid and the Prime series. This game takes place on the metroid homeworld - the mission is to wipe them out. Not one space pirate in the whole game. This was my first gameboy game and I know it inside out.
Ah you already corrected the article!
YAAAAAAY!!!
I'll be too busy playing Skyward Sword with my golden remote.
I hope she comes to Europe soon too.
Awesome! I loved this game when I played it a few years ago, though unfortunately the cart I played it on was used and the battery save didn't work, so I couldn't beat it. But once I get a 3DS, this'll be mine!
Yes! Finally my long lost game will be mine once again!
Love it!
Nice, I never played this when I was a kid.
Great a new game to add to my wishlist, got to love the lack of eshop cards

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. The one Metroid game I've never played. I played through every other game in the series this year, so this'll be a nice way to cap off the year
No space pirates? ARRR! That be lame, me hearties!
WOOT!
If I ever get a 3DS, & support it's VC, I will get this. The game looked too similar in many areas to easily beat the game. Obviously, this was b/c the limits of the GB, & it's cart rom sizes.
great game played this game on my gameboy when I was a kid... hope the fusion series comes next....
I actually never played those titles
cool! this is one of my favorite games I want to play on 3ds.I been noin this game will come to eshop ever since my friends on 3ds talkn bout havn this on eshop like 2-3 months ago.
Darnit, spent the rest of my $ on 3D Kirby's Adventure
Yep. I'm downloading it ASAP.
About time! When I eventually get a 3DS, this will most likely be my first purchase (along with 3D Land)...
i would absolutly love for them to make a sequil to the metroid prime hunter game. most likely not gonna happen i know x_x but a game like that would look amazing on the 3ds and it wold handle so much better with the circle pad in there as well.
