Here's a curious one: Disney has just registered a trademark for Castle of Illusion that explicitly states it refers to video game cartridges, discs and software.
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse was a much-loved release back on the Mega Drive, and although it's unlikely this trademark could point towards the game's re-release on Virtual Console.
However, it's much more likely this trademark relates somehow to the much-rumoured Disney Epic Mickey 2 which has been doing the rounds on the Internet rumour mill for the past few months.
Of course, companies register and re-register trademarks all the time and it may simply be a case of Disney renewing its ownership of the Castle of Illusion mark to stop it falling dormant.
Which would you rather see — Castle of Illusion on Virtual Console or a follow-up to Disney Epic Mickey? Speak your thoughts below.

I predict that Epic Mikey's 2 full title is going to be: Disney's Epic Mickey 2: Castle of Illusion. Just you wait and see. Would be a nice nod to SEGA-fans.
Either that, or a free download of Castle of Illusion as a pre-order incentive.
Loved this game on MD. Please release on VC. Make it work with PAL component cable too.
Why not both?
Virtual Console, please.
I would love to see a sequel to Epic Mickey.
Loved castle of illusion. I dont mind what they do with it as long as its good .
Such a good game.
I loved this game on Mega Drive, so I'd love to see it on the VC. But including it in Epic Mickey 2 would be alright, if it's done right.
Castle o' Illusion....FTW!!!
i would like both.epic mickey 2 would be good if they made it a bit more traditional.minus the robots etc
Neither. I'd rather see the Magical Quest trilogy.
So excited! They better nail the gameplay this time though. The first one was amazing because the story and Oswald, but I doubt whatever they come up with will be able to carry another game on its own.
Oh who am I kidding? I will totally eat it up regardless of its "flaws"!
Both a VC release and new Epic Mickey would be great. Also I love the box art for Castle of Illusion
Epic Mickey 2: Castle of Illusion is exactly what I was thinking to Muis!
I hope this game will be on both the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PSVita. I was greatly disappointed that the first Epic Mickey game wasn't on the 3DS.
They're totally making Epic Mickey 2 and I'd love it if instead of the cartoons it paid homage to his gaming history instead.
Beautifull little game. One of the most interesting megadrive games.
NintyFan, licensed games aren't banned from the VC. Its just that re-aquiring the license is often a long, hard and expensive process that nobody bothers going through the trouble to do so. And sometimes licenses are impossible to re-aquire due to shifts in company attitudes and status.
If Disney wants to release Castle of Illusion on VC, then it would be easier for them to do so than for Sega to approach them to request the license to do so.
I want this for VC.
Interesting, I wonder if it will like Epic Mickey 2.
Oh! Thanks NintendoLife. Forgot about Castle of Illusion. I need to add that to my retro collection!
The former - VC
Not too worried about this on VC as I always have the cart near the top of my Megadrive collection. Could make a great '3D Classic' or remake on 3DS, if done well.
The VC option.
It would be nice, if Disney did give the green light to all their old titles from the consoles the VC emulates.
@James
And I´d love if it paid homage to his comics, like the ones made by Floyd Gottfredson, Romano Scarpa and Paul Murry.
Awesome game.Loved it as a kid. Please release this on VC!!! Pretty please!
would be good to get both an epic mickey sequel and castle of illusion for the V.C.
it also makes me wonder if disney would go on to secure the rights for donald duck's quack pack from sega. that was also a megadrive/genesis game and a very good one too.
I'd love to see anything on the Virtual Console again. Anything.
i remember a good donald duck platformer on megadrive.not sure if it was called quack attack.was also a good co-op mickey+donald 2 player not sure what console it was on.
@LordAndrew anything as good as castle of illusion on the V.C is just what it needs instead of nothing.
@daznsaz it was quack attack. and as for the co-op, i think it is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Illusion-starring-Disneys-Mickey-Sega-Genesis/dp/B000035XLD/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1317761813&sr=1-1
Quack Attack, or Quackshot?
World of Illusion is also good, with differing levels if you play as Mickey, Donald or both. Very easy though.
@Ristar42 quackshot. sorry, i got the title muddled up so i googled it to check. quack attack was on the gamecube, quack shot on the megadrive.
@misswliu81 I still have these three games, Quackshot is great.
The Master System also had some excellent 8-bit Disney games, it's own different version of Castle of Illusion and Donald in The Lucky Dime Caper.
@James The idea of Epic Mickey 2 paying homage to Mickey's rich gaming history is genius. I would snap up a game that looked back at Castle of Illusion, or Mickey Mania.
Castle of Illusion is pretty legendary as far as retro platforming games are concerned, it was lovingly designed and it really set a visual benchmark for both its background graphics and character animation on the Mega Drive. The Mean Machines review of the game is well known to UK retro mag fans, it scored 95% in Issue 5 (Feb. 1991).
I have very fond memories of reading the review and then importing this fun SEGA platformer from Japan.
@misswliu81 yea that was the co-op one.back then all the disney games were good though.
I'd be interested in picking it up on Virtual Console, if only because it'd mean that the DuckTales and Darkwing Duck games would join the fray eventually.
I'd like to think it was part of "DisEM" 2 since there was an interview I read on the web where Warren stated he had plans to turn it into a trilogy [right before the first DisEM was released], and this seems like a legitimate scenario or backdrop for the title. However, I cannot verify the trilogy status, as when you google "Disney Epic Mickey trilogy" it only comes up with speculation and whiny, albeit persistant fans.
VC.
I wish
Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, and Quackshot on the VC please!
Watched gameplay videos of Castle of Illusion and while decent it seemed a bit too formulaic to me. Could still be fun to play of course. I can remember having great fun playing the Master System's Land of Illusion with my aunt though and there are so many great Mickey and Disney themed games it kinda makes me sad not to see them on the VC or released as collections. The idea of such releases gets me more excited than Super Mario 3D Land. And i'm really looking forward to that one.
If they want new Mickey games to appeal to old school fans and casuals alike it would be a smart move to do a new 2D platformer in the vein of Rayman Origins, NSMBW, DKCR or Sonic Generations imo. If it's good enough faith in the franchise could be regained and from there on they could think about 3D and other genres again. Btw, what exactly is Retro doing at the moment ?
I still don't know if i can trust Epic Mickey but if they decide to make a new 3D platformer your idea sounds great @James (17.).
the disney games were great on megadrive, aladin, lion king, castle of illusion, world of illusion, quack shot would make a great collection of games. please put on VC or release all on a disc
Ristar42- i'm not familiar with donald in the lucky dime caper
Daznsaz- that was when disney video games were great; nowadays you get a mixed bag of some good, some ok, and others not so good.
i'm not too keen on the disney games by EA and disney themselves- ones like hanna montana etc are aimed more at young kiddies these days.
@misswliu81 yea theyve gone a bit off course nowadays.enjoyed epic mickey.gonna get that one again cos daughter liked it aswell.
