We recently brought you word that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was nominated for the GAME Award of 2010 at this year's British Academy Video Game Awards. As the only category voted by the public, our readers showed a lot of support for the rotund plumber which should hopefully help him snag the recognition. If you haven't already, make sure you head over to the BAFTA voting page and cast your vote.
"But what about the other categories?", we hear you ask. Well, the Academy today officially announced which games have been nominated under which category and this year, there are a total of 44 different titles battling it out to win as many BAFTA Golden Masks as they can across 16 categories.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood from Ubisoft is ahead of the pack with seven nominations, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 hasn't done too bad itself, snapping up four as it leads the way for games that are available on Nintendo platforms. Will it win awards for Best Game, Gameplay, Original Music and the people's choice GAME Award of 2010?
Other titles hoping to get their hands on some gold include LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 which has been nominated for two awards: best game under the categories of Family, and Handheld. Professor Layton and the Lost Future, Sonic Colours and Super Scribblenauts have all been nominated for best Handheld too.
With the recent announcement that Activision is abandoning its Guitar Hero, and DJ Hero franchises due to continued declines in the music genre, it's a shame that the latter series has been forced to stop so relatively early in its lifespan. Let's hope DJ Hero 2 from FreeStyleGames gets a nice farewell by winning the Use of Audio award that it has been nominated for.
The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 16th March at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Dara O'Briain will once again be the host for the evening and for the first time, the awards will be streamed live at http://go.ign.com/baftamicrosite, www.bafta.org and www.baftagameaward.com. There is a category of "best game", and "game award of 2010". What's the difference?
GAME Award of 2010 is voted for by the public; Best Game is decided by the BAFTA panel.
Hopefully Limbo sweeps in the categories its nominated for. And I think that the real competition will be between Assassins Creed Brotherhood and Mass Effect 2.
Though I can see SMG2 winning Best Soundtrack.
Wait, wait...Black Ops for Best Story...? Did I miss something?
Hopefully it will win at least one award. I'm not sure the soundtrack will win because it's pretty much recycled stuff from the previous game isn't it?
Red Dead with only 1 nomination?
Best multiplayer... hah what a joke!
How many of them actually support splitscreen four player?
Only Halo deserves to win that one.
Now if it was best online game that would be different.
Black Ops nominated for Best Story... uhmmmmmm... how?! The onlt good thing about it was the major plot twist at the end...
I agree that Black Ops did not have a good story line...
Those are some UGLY trophies!
What kind of artistic achievment did Black Ops accomplish?
I agree with JimLad. Halo deserves to win multiplayer.
@grenworthshero It was good at first, but then by the end it got too technical/weird/not so good
Red Dead Redemption wasn't nominated for use of audio OR artistic achievement?
I give up.
Perhaps the British have different tastes than Americans
Black Ops shouldn't be anywhere near most of these lists...Artistic Achievement? Best Story? Really? I like Black Ops, but it's so overrated. Of course, trust the average British gamer to vote for it as best game of 2010.
I hope ME2 wins a lot of awards, it's one of my favourite games ever. SMG2, Layton and Super Scribblenauts should also win something.
How much did activision pay the BAFTA panel again to get those undeserving Black Ops awards. Just imagine the Best video game story of 2010 is: a guy shot russians in a war that there was very little shooting and then went crazy and heard some numbers (which was pointless), Best audio track of 2010: some generic war music samples that play for about 10 seconds each and some gun fire, best artistic acheviement in 2010 is: having your clan tag on your gun and some pretty red dots... ZOMG... generic British gamers = stupid
This list of nominations just shows how pitiful the tastes in gaming the UK has in general. There are many examples of this in these nominations but one of the best is the artistic acheivement category. How did COD: black ops, Assasin's creed: brotherhood and God of war III get nominated for that?
Actually, Black Ops story was better than the haters give it credit. It's a Manchurian Candidate rip-off of course, but it's all done quite well. Highly debatable if it's award winning material (story wise), but let's not spout bullsh*t just to desperately try to appear hip.
Frack me....SMG 2 should win at least two categories hands down. Social, inclusive gaming should win.
Really sad that Dragon Quest IX wasn't even listed.. Nor Monster Hunter Tri for at least Best Multiplayer- AT LEAST.
... And MHTri definitely should have been in Artistic Achievement rather than Black Ops...
Agree with 21
