Europe was lucky enough to get this excellent game not so long ago and in our 9/10 review we called it “original and entertaining”, “a great surprise” and “a must-download for fans of the FPS genre”. So yeah, it’s rather good. It retails for 1000 Wii points.
Over on the Virtual Console, C64 fans will be in heaven with the trio of games available today - The Last Ninja, International Karate and Pitstop II.

Boo.
Awesome!!
UGH! Boo is right Popyman. After all that waiting...
And I JUST KNEW Commodore 64 was coming today!!
Looks like I have to buy even more Wii Points now...
Nice one! Onslaught is amazing, and I look forward to pwning you all! And... possibly getting dethroned on a few high score lists
Shame that you haven't got SAMEGAME yet though. I wonder where that one got to?
Surely the C64 North American launch news should be at VC Reviews?
But great news on both fronts and for once four titles in one day for North America!
@Sean Aaron: Yeah, I'm surprised there's no update there yet...
Here I thought we weren't getting this for a few months. Glad I was wrong though.
I knew this would hit today, Hudson updated their site since early morning for it.
Good for US and Canada. Now Europe need to catch up. There are only 6 EU Only Games, except the C64 games. If US and Canada catch up so fast like Australia in the Past with the Turbografx games, it would be very unfair against Europe.
Then there were 27 US Only and 6 EU Only games.
RGVEDA
This was released in Canada today as well, of course.
It'll be fun playing some multiplayer FPS action against fellow forumers.
@KS8: Woah, didn't reconize you with the new avatar! Getting ready for Black Knight, eh? =P
@Jogurt: Duh.
@Popyman: lol. I've had this avatar on other sites so I thought I'd change it here too. I had debated over using my Professor Layton avi but I know someone else uses it... and it so happens they've posted here. (Wanna play ACCF? lol.)
For me:
Meh for the fps, still, I'm glad for all the people who wanted it .
YAAAAAAAAY!, for the C64 comming to NA .
@KS8: Oh ok, lol.
Yeah sure! I wanna change my avatar first, you got me wanting a new one...
wow what a great week! I will probably not buy Onslaught, although it does look quite good. But I'm excited for C64! The Last Ninja in particular
The... best... update... ever!!!
Onslaught is finally in America, and we get 3 C64 games, including The Last Ninja? I'm drooling all over the floor right now. And I'm lucky, because my birthday's in a week!
@Popyman: You suck, you nay-sayer.
@KS8: I'm excited to play The Black Knight too.
@Jogurt the Yogurt: Duh as well.
@tatemon555: Best update ever? Hardly. Especially when the 3 games we get are very meh. I had hoped for something solid like Paradroid but beggars can't be choosers I suppose...
And yeah, SatBK FTW. It looks pretty awesome and the amount of work they've put into it, I can only imagine how great it'll be. You should've seen some of the recent screens I noticed. Beautiful.
@Popy: Message my Wii about ACCF if you wanna go now. XD
Also, I had predicted Bit.Trip Beat and/or PEDE Same Game. Guess I was wrong. Probably next week then.
Hudson inexplicably does it again. It would've been a great laugh if Samegame came out on Feb also, hahahahaha.
This site now has the awesome-ness that is Gitaroo Man on it, thank me! _
@tatemon555: I have nothing against the game, I just bloody hate all that was said about it by people in the past few weeks just because it's a FPS.
Popy and I feel exactly the same way. We were discussing this earlier last week.
Download time!!!!!!!
Mass alien bug scum finally invade our friends over the pond. Squash em all - the bugs that is
No Bit Trip?? I thought they were shooting for Feb...looks like that passed them by though.
Damn. I'm still holding onto my points until I see it.
This is going to be the first game I've downloaded in a while... probably since World of Goo or Boogerman. I've never played a C64 game, so I'm not sure if I'll get one of those as well, or if I'll just wait for something else. I suppose I could always try out Toki Tori.
onslaught was worth my money. i'm glad i'll be enjoying it.
@Damien sez... C64 fans will be in heaven with the trio of games available today
Considering that us C64 fans actually have a C64 (or at least one of these), I find that statement to be in doubt.
Truth be told, these games are far from the best that's on the C64. In fact, it's going to be hard to get the "best" out of the publishers Nintendo has lined up. A lot of the really good games were EA, LucasFilms, MUSE, and a ton of companies that no one has even heard of.
If you honest want to play the best of the C64, save yourself some money and visit your local Commodore Club. You can pick up a Commodore for $20-$30 and the original game disks for as little as $1 a disk. The experience will be much better than the Wii's emulator* as the two systems aren't really of a similar design.
* Believe it or not crisp graphics are actually a problem with these old computer systems. Programmers regularly took advantage of the way that television screens worked to produce a wider array of colors and to smooth the images. Bleed between pixels was desirable! Playing the game on an ultra-sharp emulator will therefore look far more primitive and less interesting than the experience the real system will give you.
However the emulators have a MASSIVE advantage. Many people don't remember what load times were like back then.
Been playing Onslaught this morning. Well worth 1000 points, really enjoying it!
@thewiirocks,
Not to be mean, but, I think most people even fans of retro systems/ games are more likely to download a game for 5bucks than actually take the time find a new community, tap in and actually hook up the real thing. Convenience and accesibility is the essence of VC. I love all these old systems, but hardly enough to go out and find each one so I can have the widest array of games. It's a pleasure enough for me to have even a sampling of all this stuff in one place. To most people resolution differences are kind of a small issue, when it comes to retro gaming too.
I do agree about the publishers that are innaccesible; same is true for the nintendo stuff. (like "Rare" games, etc.) It's too bad.
What's with all the people being pissed off about this update? It seems like a good update if you ask me: 3 VC games, 1 9/10 WW game AND a new Virtual Console. Stop complaining.
Won't be buying any of these. Saving my money for MadWorld. Also just bought Super Mario Galaxy, so, yeah.
Also, weren't they going for a february release for Bit.Trip.Beat? If so, their a little late.
My Commodore 64 is on its last legs, at least the disk drive is, so I'm happy that Commodore 64 games are finally hitting the VC here in the US. Maybe I can finally pack this stuff up for good.
As for Bit.Trip.Beat, I guess we'll just have to wait until next week. I was sure looking forward to reviewing it this week.
I completed Onslaught. The game is very good. but.... the misions are repetitive....
For play online: goyo_17393@hotmail.com
i have not posted for a while WOOT A FPS!!!!! I just wish it had deathmatch
booooo! I want bit trip and bubble bobble now!
Awesome Onslaught came today. I'll pick this up as soon as I can.
@Ren - That's a fair argument. I guess my argument really boils down to the fact that the emulation won't be even close as an experience and that many of the best games for the system will never make it to the Wii. Of those that are already available on the Wii, most can be obtained by getting a C64DTV for ~$20. A significant savings over purchasing them all on the VC.
YES!!!
Puts down Pitchfork and Torch
Now excuse me as I DL this
Great news but I still dont know if i should get Onslaught..
Onslaught is pretty good.
So I guess the absence of a Deathmatch mode isn't too bad for this title, huh? Of course right now I get my FPS bug-blaster fix with Tremulous.
In the word of Homer Simpson: Woohoo!
I'm downloading this ASAP.
Now that we have an FPS, how long until we get some beat-'em-up games?
Good! Onslaught finally release!
But i think Nintendo put too much consoles! If nintendo concentrate only on his console, i would be really happy (With the Nintendo 64)!!
Gonna get me some points and pick this up this week! Great week, with 4 games and a new system even if I don't care about that system.
ONSLAUGHT!!!!!
It's too bad this game is 1000 points, cuz when I add that points card and buy WoG with my remaining 2400 points, I'll be 100 points short.
Ah well, I certainly know what I'm gonna get with my next wave of points!
Score! Ive been waiting for this ever since i read that review.
I must say, so far, it is quite good. Ive only done the first 2 missions, but they were very fun. I had no problems with the pointer going off screen (unlike in MP3). However, I do have a few issues:
1. Grenades are way to hard to aim and throw.
2. This game goes by the "IF you reload and still have ammo in the clip, you lose your clip" method. It may be more realistic, but Ive never been a big fan.
But beside that, Onsluaght is a great addition to WW, and deserves the score it got, for not only being the first FPS on WW, but also one of the best on the Wii.
@KS8: Woah. New avatar. Didnt recognize you for a sec. ALl we need now is for you to make more controversey
Also, I dont know much about the C64. What are the best games to look for?
I'm just going to start pretending Gradius Rebirth is the new release every Monday until it comes out here.
Wooo, Gradius! It's finally here! I'm downloading it now!
This looks good but if its too hard I don't want to buy it.
@Bahamut ZERO: Well, the LAST NINJA games have absolut great music, but heavy gameplay. One of the best games we europeans have is NEBULUS, an eight-level-nightmare, in wich you play some kind of a frog trying to climb towers packed with riddles.
The main thing on that game is the graphic. Its 3D and was a sensation at that time. Great game, really.
And just for you americans: we also had the discussion about the price for C64 games - its everbodys decision.
@Flak: Heavy gameplay? Translation por favor?
Hmm... do I want this or Super Metroid more? I only have enough points left for one (1,500)... (or I could just get more points and buy both )
@d41: Super Metroid. But buy more points theyre both well worth it.
Also am I the only one who finds grenade throwing wierd?
Third best upsate ever! Second was Mario RPG. First is reserved for the release of EarthBound! We will get it I tell ya!
Nice. I may end up getting this but, probably wont be till the weekend though.
I don't have the game but the grenade throwing sounds similar to red steel which I had no problem with.
@Toddr: I can always throw them, just not where I want them to go. Can you explain the art of grenade throwing to me please
Now THIS is how all FPS games should be done! Who cares about the story? Who cares about collecting things? Who cares about being scared out of your wits? Just let me SHOOT something!!!!111!!!1!!11eleventy!!!111!
(Though many games even get that part messed up. Half-Life 2, I'm looking at you. It's a SHOTgun. You know? Because it spreads SHOT? Why oh why don't they go down unless I hit the magical correct spot? Meh.)
@Falk Sturmfels - Tower Toppler (aka Nebulous) is great stuff, but it was ported to every system known to mankind. There's even a free Open Source clone that's just as good (if not better) than the original:
http://toppler.sourceforge.net/
Enjoy!
@Adam-Have fun with that.
@thewiirocks-Really? I never had that problem in HL2 or the episodes (PC) and the shotgun was one of my favs? What did you play it on?
ONSLAUGHT-Tomorrow, you are mine. (10:44 PM my time)
Hurray! Finally, a good Wii FPS! I'll make sure to pick this up someday. However, I'm still saving my points for Cave Story. Oh well, at least it's out.
@thewiirocks
I whole-hearrtedly agree: Shooters should always be about shooting things. No need for baggage like stealth missions, or randomly collecting anything that isn't gonna help me shoot things.
I think I'm going to have to pick this up soon. Anything Wifi usually means lots of replay value.
@Objection_Blaster - It wasn't a "problem", it was just the way the game worked. Make a perfect head shot or no dead bad guy for you! Hitting their head slightly off-center obviously means a soldier-zombie is going to get a grenade in your face. Not exactly the most effective way to feel like a bad-ass. In fact, it feels more like work.
Come to think of it, the whole "get up in your face" thing was incredibly annoying. I think I preferred getting shot at by space marines with rocket launchers.
@Mickeymac - And let's not forget about the maze crawling! I hate trying to find my way through the maze... Just wanted to shoot something...
Mindless blasting of beasties? Yes please! Too FUN.
@ Bahamut ZERO
Doesn't it throw it where your cursor is pointing?
Onslaught is astoundingly good considering it's a $10 FPS built for WiiWare. Technically gorgeous game considering WW's size limitations and it controls absolutely beautifully. The level design is nothing stellar and the missions are repetitive... but in a good way. Blasting away at bugs and watching their green blood splatter everywhere is immensely enjoyable and rewarding. The motion controls are also implemented exceptionally well; throwing those grenades is a breeze and actually takes it account how hard you thrust the nunchuk forward.
Great game, Hudson! Keep up this level of quality, please! It's surprises like this which make WiiWare worth it.
Jeez, I can't believe the praise I keep hearing here. And most people here have my sensibility about gaming: If it's fun it's a keeper. And me all too busy to get anything right now, Dang! I'm not a FPS guy but this seems great for me, my job has me badly needing to blast things right now.
(making a childrens video about science) must destroy science; Shoot giant bugs.
might purchase this tonight as I just finished Lit
I'm downloading it now! My first Wii download this year...can't wait to see everyone online...
Just got Onslaught! The game is pretty sweet. Well worth 10 dollars and it is pretty awesome. Only grudge against it is repetitiveness, and not best quality presentation. But then again, it is a wiiware title, so I can forgive. Controls are great, and there are lots of things to shoot at! Download Onslaught, it is VERY much worth it!
Anyone know how to beat the first boss. He was so hard I switched from normal to easy.
And still lost
@Bahamut ZERO sez - Anyone know how to beat the first boss.
Hit the weak spot for massive damage! (silence) No, really!
Use the D-Pad to change to the 200 bullet, fully automatic, assault rifle. Then wait until you can see the whites... err... greens... um... of his ooze. Let loose with a flurry of bullets on the underside of the head and main body. You'll know you made a hit when you see green ooze leak.
While firing, continuously strafe to the side while keeping the boss in your sights. This is a basic circle-strafe and will allow you to avoid his attacks while pumping him full of lead. Take out the enemies if they get in your way (maybe hitting the hives here and there), but otherwise ignore them and focus on the boss. Keep it up and he'll be bug bait in no time.
We are making champioships with this game already here in Brazil! is my favorite WiiWare game by the way!
@thewiirocks: Wait. The assault rifle only has 60 bullets. And you cant mean SMG, that only has 120. Elaborate por favor?
@Bahamut-I just got the game today so I don't know what weapon he's thinking of but here are some overall FPS boss tips: DON'T stand still. Ever. Strafe and fire. Do your best to double-tap to the sides when the boss does its big attacks and make sure to aim for the weak spots (green.) Conserve your rockets for when you know the boss will stand still. In other words, learn the boss' movements as well. Good luck. I'll probably get to the boss later tonight. Love this game!
YAY!!! Now I need to go delete things from my Wii, get a Points card and GO BUY ONSLAUGHT!!!!!! (and a some other things)
@Bahamut ZERO - You should have a weapon that has 200 bullets and 250hp per bullet. It's called an SG-507S. It's mapped to left on my D-Pad. You may need to map it yourself by grabbing it from the right bar and moving it into the D-Pad configuration under the "Change Weapon" pause menu.
It's fully automatic, fires 4 rounds/sec, holds 200 round clips, and kicks some serious glowing bug ass! (If you've seen the back of the elephant bugs you'll probably break up laughing over that one. )
@Objection_Blaster - Don't bother using the rockets on the boss. They're too darn slow. Better to use an automatic rifle. They go down much quicker that way.
OMG I JUST REALIZED THAT DEADLY CREATURES IS OUT FOR WII NOW!!! Yay...I shall get that after I get Monster Hunter 3!!! (or before, depending when MH3 is coming out)
And in between (or before) those dates, I shall get this game. Man, the Wii is getting some pretty epic games this year!
ONSLAUGHT!!!! Although I do recall somebody saying that we wouldn't get it this month because we already got a Hudson game for this month. Oh well, can't complain.
@thewiirocks: No, left is the SMG. It hold 120. Did you upgrade it, Im still using the first one.
Now as soon as i get some wii points you shall all go down!(o)
Did anyone else read IGNs review? Its such a stupidly written, clearly biased review its almost funny
@Bahamut-Having played the boss, thewiirocks is right; rockets are too slow. Also, destroy the hive tunnels at the beginning so that weak enemies don't respawn and annoy you.
I actually just beat the first boss. Yay
Of course it was on easy.....
Okay, holy crap. The 2nd boss on normal is ridiculous. The only way to avoid his "OMEGA-jump kill you" attack is to sidestep, the game's weakness. It only works for me half the time. I HATE this boss. I've lost so many times.
First boss is fairly easy, I usually go for the nests first (ignoring the boss), then engage him from a distance (he has limited range and the arena is huge). If you're close wait for him to jump, he gets his claws stuck in the ground, in that time he can't do the side slashes he usually does when you're close. Get in there, use your whip (it really does MASSIVE DAMAGE and can pierce the armor on most enemies), run away before he can slash you.
Also note that the weakpoint hitboxes are a bit larger than they look like, you can often keep shooting at the head even when it's lowered and you don't really see the glowy part.
The first boss is doable with just lv1 weapons, against the second you really need the lv2 SMG unless you're absolutely godlike or figure out what exactly makes him correct his aim while using the beam attack (I sometimes get hit even after sidestepping). I don't think of his jump attack as dangerous though, that only gets me when I'm REALLY careless because it's pretty slow (often walking is enough to get out of the way), usually I see it as a chance for some whippings.
What I REALLY have no idea about is how to avoid the final boss's ramming attack, I run backwards (sometimes with doubletaps) and try to get him to flinch by hitting his "wings" and such, while he often stops just before reaching me it's not fully consistent.
A bigger worry for me is scoring in mission 9 though, I just can't get enough kills for a good rank there without stirring too many nests and losing the ship.
I actually thought the second boss was muuuuuuuuuuuch easier than the first one. His circular-sweeping laser attack is easy to dodge and you have to deal with a lot fewer bugs as you fight it.
Yeah but the straight beam is harder to dodge, I think he turns to face you at some point in the charging and firing process while the L4 boss seems to commit to an aim when the animation starts. I didn't have to deal with many bugs for either, I wrecked all the nests in L4 ASAP.
@Bahamut ZERO - Now that you mention it, I believe the 200 bullet weapon is located in one of the storage boxes on level 3. Blast them all until you find yourself a gun. You're going to need it.
BTW, here's a tip: If you need to take out a whole lotta hives as fast as possible, use the electric whip,. They'll go down like dominoes.
I've managed to beat the game on easy and now I'm playing more online. If you see some weird guy with the name "Daddy", that's me.
@thewiiroks: Well hidden. Too bad I have to find them myself, cant find an FAQ anywhere
Dang it, I went throught the entire level, killed every green pod thing, and couldnt find it. Where is it?
Green pod? The gun is in the black crates.
Edit: It's level 5 I'm thinking of, sorry. Which is weird, 'cause I swear I had the gun by level 4. Go figure.
Edit2: According to GameFAQ, the upgraded SMG is in a storage container on level 3. So... I'm not crazy and it is somewhere in those crazy tunnels. Can't tell you where, though. Just look for stacks of crates and SHOOT THEM.
@wiirocks: I searched the whole level and found no crates. Where are they exactly?
There's a circle in the east on that map, the crate is in a corner there (the corner formed by the southern slope and the path around the circle).
I found it. Thanks guys, its a great weapon. SMG is my favorite of the bunch.
my fav atm is the upgraded shotgun. it just helps so much at scoring a s rank.
So I switched weapons to the "3 shot at a time" gun and beat the boss like that. Apparently lv1 machine gun doesn't do jack to that boss. Now I'm having trouble on lvl9, yay! But I do like the game still.
It's the law to hate level nine. If you can't do it - you're normal. If you claim that you can do it - you've clearly lost your mind
Well I beat it after ANOTHER 5 tries. It IS the law. By the end of the day, only 2 levels left, but I've barely touched WIFI, so I'm definately getting my money's worth, let alone trying to go for better scores and playing on the other difficulties. (Dear God, there's a harder version of Level 9?!)
I've been thinking of getting this. How fun is online? Is there alot of people still playing this online?
@longtimegamer-Its fun online and offline and even on the first day I could usually find people online. I just beat this a few days ago, but now I'm gonna tackle other difficulties and find all the hidden stuff.
