rusty old shooter ahoy! Gradius III was one of the first 2D shooters to be released on Nintendo's SNES and as a result it now looks a bit poor compared to best there is out there. I'm sure there will be plenty of Gradius fans out there that will download it without even thinking, but in my opinion the pick of the week has to be Wonder Boy in Monster World. This is a really fantastic platform RPG that will keep you entertained for quite some time.
The strangely addtictive Battle Lode Runner completes the trio and is also well worth a look if you're after a puzzle/action game along the lines of Bomberman or Boulderdash.
All in all, a fairly decent week for US Wii owners!

Why does this suck so bad? Why can't they just do a huge dump of NES games? Do they think by waiting me wait 20 years to play my favorite games that I'm going to buy lousy ones because I am the owner of a Wii?
Gradius III is an awesome game. I doubt I'll buy it on VC though, I've already got most of the space shooters available on there, and while G3 is a great game, I doesn't have that 'pull' on me to justify spending 800 Wii points on it. That's just me, though.
I've only played one or two Loderunner games in my life, but they were great fun. For 600 points, you can't really go wrong with them, IMO.
I hear great things about Wonder Boy. The Dragon's Curse game's premise didn't really appeal to me, since I prefer using more humanoid characters in games, so I think I might give this other one a try.
At the rate they're going I'm going to be forced to choke down a big, greasy, throbbing Faceball 2000 before I can get my firm, firm grip around Super Metroid.
When is the NES Advantage going to be released for VC? I think the slow mo and rapid fire functions would help a lot. Especially in Legend of Zelda! LOL
SWEEEET!!! ZELDA 2!!!! I wonder if the emulation on the VC will be able to bring back the excrutiating suckiness of that game. How about I pay someone five bucks to punch my balls instead. Any takers?
Yeah, I meant to say "Making me wait" by the way. I wake up once a week hoping for excitement and seem to be disappointed. It makes me wish I waited a year to buy my wii so I could download a decent amount of games I like instead of reoccurring disappointment. I hope there marketing team is happy.
Why all the complaining? We have a solid puzzle/platformer that is worthy of everyone's purchase (Battle Lode Runner is really good), a good enough space shooter, and a great platforming game. There is no need to be complaining! No matter how you go today you get a good purchase. It's reasonable to complain about Romance of the Three Kingdoms week, or Baseball and Urban Champion week, or even two weeks ago with Alex Kidd, Galaga and Bravoman. Just because we didn't get one of the most known games out there doesn't mean the games we got aren't good. As much as I want Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Kirby Super Star (lots of good Super games...) I also enjoy playing games I have never played before. So open up! The Super Nintendo wasn't the only good video game system in history.
The Wii has only been out six months and you're all complaining already? If Nintendo blew all their top games in the first year then you'd all bitch that there was nothing decent on the VC after then.
Just enjoy the games, for pete's sake. If it bothers you so much, go out and buy a NES and play the original carts.
I'm sick and tired of seeing people boob because their precious pet game isn't released yet. What's the point?? As soon as it comes out you're just going to play it for two weeks and be right back here bawling because your OTHER pet game isn't out yet. Get a life! As I tryed to say yesterday, before pressing "add comment" wiped my text >
I personally think the way the VC works is crap.
If a game comes out that i've never heard of or played on, the same day a game like ZAMN or SOR 2 comes out. I will get ZAMN and SOR 2. Then, i'll look into the other game.
I don't like how Ninty are trying to force stuff on us that we don't want. Because that's what they're doing.
By only releasing games that no one's heard of, they're trying to make us buy them because there's simply nothing else out.
Now i'm sorry an all, but i'm pretty sure that most people are like me. They'll get the games they know they want and then look into the others.
I don't think anyone sees a game on the VC like Chew Man Fu and thinks "never heard of it, so I won't bother with it". Most people will think "OCARINA'S OUT WOOOOOO!!!!! Hey, what's that Kid Icarus game? I'll have a look at that. Hmm, that sounds good. I'll find some footage of it on youtube of video.google and see what it is".
Who here does that? I do every da/mn time there's a VC game out that i've never heard of or played on. Hence why I have 46 VC games and only 10 of them are games that i've owned before and about 5 more are ones that I had played on round mates houses and the likes.
I personally reckon that for fairness of all consoles and companies, we should get 1 of each VC game a week. Yes, you heard. 1 NES, 1 SNES, 1 N64, 1 MD and 1 TG game every week. And when the NG and MSX and C64 and whatever the hell else is coming out comes out, we should get one of them too.
People also say that by getting everything you want you'll then complain that nothing good ever comes out on the VC. Correct me if i'm wrong, but if everything you want comes out, then you've therefore got everything that you want so what does it matter what comes out on the VC because you know you don't want it because you've already got everything that you want?
Not only that. Surely those people will then look at the VC every now and then to see if something they've really wanted for ages but forgot about or forgot its name has came out. And when they go there they then might think "What's that? And what's that? And that etc..." and spend a fortune getting games that they'd never heard of.
So how does this strategy pay off in the long run? Because in the long run people will still probably buy the games that Ninty want them to buy, just not for a while is all. I know I would.
=/me goes back to playing Super Paper Mario and having a blast with actual (gasp) NEW content.
Steve, dunno 'bout you. But that new content that the Wii has, is kinda crap. I've had 12 Wii games and i've enjoyed 2 of them. 1 was a port and the other comes with the machine.
Everything else is a horrible game with shoddy workmanship. When are the real games gonna come out? The ones that don't get beaten in 2 hours or that are hard, or that are fun?!
Devs think this machine is a joke, and the games that they're releasing shows that.
People complaining about releases is one thing, but complaining about other people complaining is another. If you don't like that people complains, then start living like you preach and stop complaining about other people's complaints.
Props to DEMON212 for speaking your mind. I'm with you on your ideas about VC and Wii games.
Personally, I have a bunch of games I haven't beaten yet and am gonna take a break from the wii points. I honestly believe that I'll end up buying all the VC titles simply because their cheap and I'm a sucker for archives (who else has trouble searching for cartirdges for record players?).
Nintendo is doing brilliant marketing. VC is amazing. If you don't like the games this week, play some other title for a week, go rent a new release, or *gasp* call the friends you've been avoiding due to your troglydite lives. There's a reason wiisports suggests taking a break from time to time.
P.S. The dam is about to break on a bunch of titles that people have been waiting for. PS3 and 360 are having the same problems with really solid games (as all new consoles go through), but only the Wii is giving you the opportunity to relive gaming glory for a smidgen of current game costs from the comfort of your living room.
DEMON212: I have to agree with you fully. Every darn time I rent or buy a Wii game I'm disapointed in it. The only one I've wanted to play more than once is the Wii sports.
If every game would just be released, no I wouldn't be disapointed. How could I be? Every game is released. What else am I suppose to expect?
Now if only the wii was an xbox 360 with VC instead of Arcade. Atleast on down weeks for releases I could say, but hey atleast I can play online multiplayer.
Well its an average week. Oh well. If we are getting Vectorman next week (According to what Kevin says) I will be pretty happy. Also if anyone tells me that this is whining, it's not. ALSO, if anyone says instead of waiting, go buy a new game out on the market. Well I would if something decent was out!
How long have you all had your Wii's? I got mine back at the end of Jan. Since then I've become a 'pro' at all of the sports on Wii Sports, finished all of the mini-games in Wii Play & Wario Ware, finished Ultimate Marvel Alliance on normal (nearly finished all of the comic book missions as well but finding Invisible Womans a bit tough!), and have just started to get used to the tricky controls on Tiger Woods (my only regret is buying this...but gawdamn I'll get my moneys worth!). I'm just about to start Zelda. This is on top of the VC games that I play alongside them. I play for about an hour most weekdays and 2/3 weekend days. Thats plenty for me. My point is that I don't see how anyone can have exhausted the play and REPLAY value of all of their games - but I'm happy to proved wrong. I think of the VC the same as I do the release list for DVDs...some weeks there just isn't a thing I fancy picking up, some weeks loads. Just be grateful we get them at all. By the by, the moaning is fine by me - Demon is right, some of us just don't read it - I respect that people are going to want different things from the VC. By the same token that could mean that a lean week for one VC punter is a stellar week for another. There is, after all, no accounting for taste.
~If it weren't for people complaining, the weekly game announcements probably wouldn't get that many comments, since it's easier to rave about bad stuff.~
I'd rather have less comments than constant whining.
Also, to clarify, stating "I don't like this game" is not whining. Endlessly lamenting about the fact that "Nintendo hates me" because your favorite game didn't come out as soon as you wanted is whining, and certain people do it almost every week.
~If this is not the game you want to talk about, leave and come back when the discussion will gain something with your comments.~
Exactly.
~I don't like how Ninty are trying to force stuff on us that we don't want. Because that's what they're doing.~
Here's a suggestion... If you don't like the selection, then don't buy ANYTHING! I mean, think about it. If what you're saying is a real reflection of how commerce works, then Walmart should just start stocking their 5 cheapest items at a huge markup because people will be "forced" to come in and buy them. Nobody is making you download *anything* from the store.
~I don't think anyone sees a game on the VC like Chew Man Fu and thinks "never heard of it, so I won't bother with it". Most people will think "OCARINA'S OUT WOOOOOO!!!!! Hey, what's that Kid Icarus game? I'll have a look at that. Hmm, that sounds good. I'll find some footage of it on youtube of video.google and see what it is".~
What I typically do is see a game I haven't heard of, come to this site to see the reviews of it, sift through the "XXX isn't out boohoo" posts to find actual user comments on the game being reviewed, and then decide if I'm gonna give it a try. Most of the time I'm not disappointed. Yes, this might even mean I end up getting a game or two I haven't played before. Is that really so bad?? The entire point of the VC is to let us revisit a great library of games that we might not have had the opportunity to play the first time around. Don't get me wrong, when a great classic Nintendo title comes out, I'm most likely going to jump on that for the nastalgia value alone, however what I'm really finding enjoyable is playing some of the SG and TG16 titles that I never got to play when they were new.
~Hence why I have 46 VC games and only 10 of them are games that i've owned before and about 5 more are ones that I had played on round mates houses and the likes.~
And you've probably played most of them once and never looked at them again. That's YOUR fault, not Nintendo's. Nobody is compelling you to buy a game every week except for you.
~Correct me if i'm wrong, but if everything you want comes out, then you've therefore got everything that you want so what does it matter what comes out on the VC because you know you don't want it because you've already got everything that you want?~
Please define "everything you want", because I'm pretty sure Nintendo doesn't read minds. Even if they dumped every 1st-party title to the VC right now, you'd be missing lots of 2nd- and 3rd-party titles that people would still whine about. Goldeneye comes to mind as something that's probably never going to see the light of day on VC, and so you'd still have idiots whining about it not being there. And if the market strategy their using works so well, praytell why they should change it?
~Steve, dunno 'bout you. But that new content that the Wii has, is kinda crap. I've had 12 Wii games~
Stop right there. You've bought TWELVE games for a 6-month old system, and you're wondering why they're not all instant classics? Give Nintendo time to fill out the library first, geez! I own five games for Wii (Including Wii Sports), and Red Steel is the only purchase I regret. Zelda, Warioware, Excite Truck are outstanding titles and worth every penny. I'm currently renting Paper Mario and having a great time with that too. Now take a look at those names. Those are four first-party titles for a brand new system and every one of them is outstanding. I think that says alot about the quality of games we can expect to see. Yeah, some 3rd party conversions or even originals are going to be hit and miss on a system this new and different (Were you around for the first YEAR of the DS's life cycle? Ugh.) but Nintendo will always be there releasing the good stuff and the 3rd-party publishers will improve given time.
In the meantime, seriously, when's the last time you went outside?
~People complaining about releases is one thing, but complaining about other people complaining is another. If you don't like that people complains, then start living like you preach and stop complaining about other people's complaints.~
So what does that say about people who complain about people complaining about people complaining?
You got me on that last quote Steve... Nice catch!
Still, I stand by my opinion that I like most of the "whining" comments also. Just because you don't like the "whining", it doesn't make me wrong for thinkin' otherwise. A differ of opinon is what that is.
Would it be out of place with a forum on this site. A place where people could talk about what they want without being accused of whining. I for one would really appreciate a forum that's concentrated on VC and the possibilities that comes with it.
=Here's a suggestion... If you don't like the selection, then don't buy ANYTHING! I mean, think about it. Hence why I said "trying to".
=And you've probably played most of them once and never looked at them again. That's YOUR fault, not Nintendo's. Nobody is compelling you to buy a game every week except for you.
Actually i'm going through quite alot of them at the moment and enjoying them alot. I play some in multiplayer and some on my own. There's a few that I really regret getting and i'd read review after review after review and saw tons of footage of the games and asked loads of peoples opinions on them too. Like I do with every VC game that i've never played on.
=Please define "everything you want", because I'm pretty sure Nintendo doesn't read minds. I'll reword it.
Say I only wanted OOT, SMB 1, 3 and World, ZAMN and SOR 1-3.
Then once Ninty had done those games, i'd have everything that I wanted. So why would I complain about the VC never having anything good out? Because the games that I wanted have all came out.
=Stop right there. You've bought TWELVE games for a 6-month old system, and you're wondering why they're not all instant classics? Give Nintendo time to fill out the library first, geez! Steve, I keep hearing people say this and i'm totally sick of it.
"give the Wii time".
IT'S BEEN 6 MONTHS!!!
How many great games came out for the 360 after 6 months?
I bought game after game after game for the 360 and loved nearly all of them.
With the Wii i've had. Zelda. IMO it's good game with awful story and music, terrible hills have eyes art style (everyone looks like inbreds) and the games difficulty was set to baby since I breezed through it without a single death.
Warioware. I beat it in 1 hour 58 minutes. I had no interest in getting every micro game and no one I know likes Warioware so the multiplayer never got touched. With every other Warioware, i'd play it for hour after hour again and again for weeks. This one just didn't have the magic that the others had.
Rayman. Beat in 4 with eveyr mini game beat. Everything else that I would say about it I said about Wario.
Super Monkey Ball. The 50 minigames are awful and I don't like how you now have to jump.
Heatseeker. Infinite ammo and fuel as standard. Boring.
Red Steel. Amazing first person with awful sword play.
MOH: Vanguard. Terrible first person with terrible controls.
Wiisports. The only multiplayer game worth playing on the Wii, and that's for Bowling. Baseball is good and Boxing rocks. The other 2 are horrible.
Sonic. Terrible tilt controls. I don't find tilting anything fun at all. It's boring and isn't as sensitive as an analogue is.
Kororinpa. Terrible camera and tilt controls.
Excite Truck. One of the most advanced NES games i've ever played. Terrible tilt controls with pathetically easy races. I won the first 8 races by crashing into tree after tree after tree in order to get the super mega turbo boost.
Rampage. Fun for 5 minutes.
=In the meantime, seriously, when's the last time you went outside?
I leave the house quite alot. I have to because otherwise i'd have to keep those awful games. Thankfully gamestation still allow 10 day exchanges. So I buy them, spend a few hours on them, return them the next day.
I don't go out much though because everyone I know is busy at the minute with work and the likes so they prefer to just come round and have a few beers and play some games or watch a sporting event. Be that Football, Hockey, Cricket or whatever.
INpixl - A forum would be a good idea for some of these dicussions which are really going off topic now. At present with our hosting plan we really cannot justify any additional bandwidth such as a forum would create. We're basically on the edge with the constant heavy traffic we get on this site.
The ideal solution would be for someone to set up a forum on their own hosting (with our support if needed) - If everything looks good we'll give the new forum our full support and put incoming links on our reviews, news and homepage so theres no doubt where to go for a more weighty discussion.
I don't know if it was the branding, or the fact people had to register but there weren't a great deal of sign ups even though our traffic has always been high since the big boys like Kotaku, Insert Credit, etc featured us.
So anyone with some decent web skillz get in touch and lets start up a forum! We're not going to do it all off our own backs though as we just don't have enough time at the moment right now to do it justice.
I hear you Dazza. It sure ain't free of charge hosting an international site with frequent traffic. I sure hope someone takes up on your idea, but this site rocks even without a forum.
Drake, it only has 16 tracks, maybe 18. I gave it 8 and was bored *expletive deleted*. The game is a bag of Ninty crap. It has one in air stunt, it has an infinite turbo supply that doesn't punish you when you use to much (whereas Motorstorms does, as you blow up!). If you crash into a tree you get a super duper turbo that can be used with your normal turbo so you can win every race by miles. Where's the challenge? Where's the fun? Where's the 4 player multiplay? Where's the longevity and where's the replayabillity?
Ninty should just give up making new games because out of the most recent console games they've done, 3 have been genuanly good and not just "OMFG IT'S AMAZING BECAUSE I'M TEH BIGGEST FANBOYZER" good.
They should give up making consoles and stick with the handhelds. Since that's the only domain they still rock in.
But now they don't even rock in that because they're concentrating more on the Wii so nothing's coming out for the NDS.
Long live the VC, OLD games are far better than anything released today!
I was/am calm. I was just voicing my opinion on how I think that every Nintendo Wii and NGC game with the exception of 4 are total pap and not even worth £10 let alone £40. (Pikmin 1, Luigi's Mansion, SSBM and Wiisports. Those games weren't very long (SSBM was), but they were amazing. Oh, Mario Party 4 is worth £20 IMO)
And that reminds me of a great line I heard.
Someone said "you've gotta remember that these games are test games, they're testing the Wii hardware out which is why these games aren't very good" and the line I loved was the counter argument to that. The line was "if these are test games, why are we paying real game prices?".

Battle Lode Runner looks very cool.
Does it have a 5 Player-Mode on the VC, too?
Probably; all the other five-player TG16 games have had that facility carry through to the VC release.
It is 5 players, worry ye not!
I only want to make it sure.
Thanks.
:>
another so so release of VC games, moslty games meant for fans of each genre and no must get
....still want Super Mario RPG....don't care about Turbo Grax or Sega....or old NES.....
Yeah, but we're getting Vectorman, Zelda II and Shockman next week. So I'm looking forward to next week getting zelda II and vectorman again.

Steve for president!!
You got me on that last quote Steve... Nice catch!
Still, I stand by my opinion that I like most of the "whining" comments also. Just because you don't like the "whining", it doesn't make me wrong for thinkin' otherwise. A differ of opinon is what that is.
Steve, You have entirely to much time on your hands.
It must be because the VC releases stank and you have nothing better to do.

Last year before we added the comments facility we directed people to our Mean Machines forum for VC chatter:
http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/forum
I don't know if it was the branding, or the fact people had to register but there weren't a great deal of sign ups even though our traffic has always been high since the big boys like Kotaku, Insert Credit, etc featured us.
So anyone with some decent web skillz get in touch and lets start up a forum! We're not going to do it all off our own backs though as we just don't have enough time at the moment right now to do it justice.
I hear you Dazza. It sure ain't free of charge hosting an international site with frequent traffic. I sure hope someone takes up on your idea, but this site rocks even without a forum.
We've got a forum now! Get posting!!
http://www.vc-forums.com
Heyheyhey, Excite Truck is awesome. Give it more time than that.
Long live the VC, OLD games are far better than anything released today!
whoa calm down demon it's just a game
He never answered that.
