ARMS is a game very much in its own league. You can't just apply the tactics you've picked up from other fighting games and expect to win, it's just too chuffing different.
As such we've compiled a list of the eight tips and techniques we deem most important to getting your ARMS game in ship-shape, all of which you can find in the video above.
What tips would you give to other ARMS players? Let us know down there in the comments.

I love people who just grab, grab, grab. Especially with Ninjara, they think they're real slick with his disappearing act. Very predictable and just get destroyed by any competent player.
Two quick things: Dodging a rush can prevent you taking the 5 chip damage per hit, which may be important in close matches. Also, if the game is close to timing out, you're ahead, and you have your rush, you can use that to spend the last few seconds of the match while forcing your opponent to be defensive.
I never use the grabbing thing online because it's really cheap but I use it all the time in Grand Prix. It's very effective and the enemy has trouble avoiding it and attacking you so it's the best way, in my opinion, to get perfect
Online is pretty much a grab fest. Sometimes I actually have some trouble with Ninjara.
@BezBot What exactly is cheap about grabbing?
I really don't like "articles" that are just videos. They should be marked as such on the homepage so I don't waste a click
Most of the grab-fest has stopped, and I'm seeing mostly competent players that only grab when they have an opening. HOWEVER, there are a few SUPER high level players I've encountered in Party mode, almost always a gray haired ribbon girl, that are AI-like. I'm not an amazing player but I'm "pretty decent" at this point, and these guys I can not hit. Not even once. And they just grab me non-stop as I keep giving them openings as I keep punching at air. They are clearly very very high tier players, however and are likely grab spamming as my level is so far below theirs it's a trivial battle to them.
I've just changed my main from Ninjara to Min Min, as her abilities allow some cool strategies (I'm currently going with an ice glove on the left and keep it charged all the time).
I'm really trying to unlearn to jump all the time when someone strikes. Dodging is the better option most of the time (jumping is now reserved for emergencies). Also, what most people don't realize is that you should use your arms constantly even if you are out of reach and planning a strategy, as every punch fills up your rush meter. Getting one more rush than your opponent can turn the tide in a battle.
@Nintendoforlife Nothing. It's like when people say that you shouldn't grab in Smash. You don't like grabbing, avoid it! It's in the game for a reason! lol
@JarJarBlacks Thank You Some one gets it! There are cases where skills are in a game and they are overpowered. Which is sort of cheap if you use something that's unstoppable, but grabbing is easily countered. And the damage isn't all the great to be honest. To me learning how to grab effectively is the same as learning how to jump back to the stage in Smash.
"Dodge, and then grab yourself..."
Yes. Sage advice.
Wow. Unbelievable. You forgot the most important protip.
Play as Twintelle whenever possible.
Didn't you know Twintelle is bae, so if you play as her, you'll be okay?
@Nintendoforlife Not grabbing but spamming grab the whole time is, It's not really that fair that way plus makes the game less fun for both players
I'm so bad at this game.
Been stuck on Level 3 Grand Prix for a week now. Takes me about 12-15 attempts per round before I finally win. This game is SO. HARD. Ughh it's frustrating.
On Round 7. Just hoping and praying I can finally beat the rest of this Grand Prix so I can go back to Level 2 and NEVER. PLAY. ON HIGHER. THAN 2. AGAIN.
Grab spamming in ARMS is basically Roll spamming in Smash Bros.
@PlywoodStick Sees the pun
Go to the corner!
@megavel19 pun?
@iNintendo @Flanktwo I wouldn't mind the pointless clicks if they at least had the decency to let me know to wait until I'm on WiFi. But I can't stand when websites require massive amounts of data for every page instead of getting to the #$&%ing point with the information we visit them for. It's really just obnoxious.
"You can't just apply the tactics you've picked up from other fighting games and expect to win, it's just too chuffing different."
Um, I've noticed quite a few tactics from Smash work (particularly baiting)...and honestly, the first half of those tips apply to games like Smash as well.
That said, good list for starting players to keep in mind.
I would totally buy a kid cobra and helix amiibo if arms got an amiibo line released. I'm actually surprised they haven't.
I liked this one but I would like to say that you can actually jump and avid a rush you just gotta use mechanica :3
@The_Gerudo_King : ARMS Amiibo would print money. Great call!
Anyone using a Slapmander with a Megaton? Thinking that would be a lethal combo, but I need to get them for a character via Get Arms
@The_Gerudo_King I would buy any ARMS Amiibo they released, and I'm pretty sure it's in the works. Nintendo would be crazy not to make Amiibo. Hopefully they will unlock alt costumes, even if they're just color swaps.
@Nintendoforlife My kid started out spamming grabs all the time. It's infuriating, and it was SUPER EFFECTIVE! At first I would get mad and tell her to stop grabbing all the time. Then she asked, "why? That's my technique".
I didn't have an answer for her, so I focused on finding how to counter the grabfest instead. Using dfferent ARMS, better dodging, timing my punches so I always had a free arm to deflect with. Eventually I got to where her grabs were much less effective and I was destroying her while she wasted time grabbing. So she started learning other techniques. We're both much better players now, and I have no problem with grabby-grabby players online. (Not that I'm all that great a fighter, just that grab spamming isn't more effective than any other technique).
Like the line says, don't get mad - get even!
Mechanica has served me well online. I find Ninjara online is most prone to being a grab spammer, but not to difficult to dodge.
I played a really precise Master Mummy the other night. Blocking when needed, attacked very sparingly, but made sure it counted. Possibly one of the best matches I've had.
I believe Ribbon Girl is top tier, judging from just how her weave is. A good Ribbon Girl can basically jump into a super and dodge every hit. I've seen it happen, and it blows my mind every time.
