Go! Go! Mister Chickums (Switch eShop)
Sylamp is banging the drum(stick) of this very cute, very recent single-screen throwback:
Go! Go! Mister Chickums is a really fun single-screen platformer similar to games like Bubble Bobble or Donut Dodo, in each level your goal is to get eggs back to the nest while avoiding enemies and obstacles. There are 10 worlds with 10 levels each plus a boss fight at the end, and each world introduces new gimmicks or enemies to keep things interesting, it has 2-player local co-op as well. Definitely worth checking out for fans of these types of games
Heian City Story (Switch eShop)
RafaelBChaves is a fan of this 2024's Heian City Story, a citybuilder from Kairosoft:
You get to design your layout, expand your land, and choose what buildings and shops go in your town. As it grows, more people want to move in, and you can assign them jobs based on their stats to help your city develop, like boosting research to unlock better stuff. There are even sports minigames against other towns that increase your fame. It feels simple at first, but there’s actually a lot of depth with customization, upgrades, and building combos to optimize everything.
Iris and the Giant (Switch eShop)
2020's Iris and the Giant from French dev Louis Rigaud is the pick of Antonio España Zamora:
A much enjoyable deck-builder roguelite that allows to choose the difficulty, plus it clearly explains its mechanics; making it a perfect entry point to the genre. It also tells the story of a young girl that has to fight her demons to regain her will.
Leap Year (Switch eShop)
sketchturner says you should jump on Leap Year.
It's $5 and you should buy it right away. But do NOT watch gameplay. This is a game you need to go in blind. It's a puzzle platformer that starts out feeling like a joke to troll you, then it feels clever and creative, and then by the end it feels impossibly brilliant in its design. In just 3 hours, Leap Year gave me a completely unique gaming experience that I haven't been able to stop thinking about ever since.
Lia: Hacking Destiny (Switch eShop)
T-Speed is all about Lia: Hacking Destiny, "a fast-paced roguelike with varied weapons, upgrades and skill trees, but simple enough to jump into without memorising a manual."
Gameplay involves clearing rooms across multiple floors, each ending with a boss fight. Along the way, you rescue cats that reward you with resources when your run ends.
What sets it apart is the light stealth elements. Security cameras are scattered throughout rooms, and staying in their sight too long triggers penalties such as additional enemies and traps appearing.
If you’re looking for a fun, grindy roguelike with minimal learning curve, this is a great choice.
Lovish (Switch eShop)
Quarth kicks off a couple of recommendations with Lovish:
A fun little pixel platformer in a cure retro style, in which you solve puzzles in trap filled rooms, in search for the kidnapped princess Tsuna. Full of humour and fourth wall breaking.
LunarLux (Switch eShop)
CosmicNobab's LunarLux from last year is lighting up MBlaze:
LunarLux is a sci fi RPG that really clicked with me. I love the battle system, its hybrid turn & action-based and it's so much fun.
There is lots to explore, secrets to find and a banger of a soundtrack.
The story isn't anything new, but its well executed and i always wanted to see what came next. The characters are great too, with personalities and charm.
It's a fun, short RPG and they have begun work on the sequel!
Mixolumia (Switch eShop)
Quarth returns with love and more banging music with 2022's Mixolumia:
Like an indie version of Tetris Effect, with a banger soundtrack and fun, but challenging gameplay.
Öoo (Switch eShop)
Back again for another pass, Öoo from March is sketchturner's second pick:
A puzzle platformer from the maker of Elechead. This is one of those games that makes you feel like a genius. Figuring out how to proceed is never over-complicated, just clever enough to feel rewarding. The core mechanics are consistently used in new ways throughout the entire game.
The game reminds me a little of Bomb Chicken except your bombs don't kill you and there are no enemies... just perfectly tuned exploration and puzzles. Very highly recommended!
Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster (Switch eShop)
And Brett Price also returns with praise for Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster:
The FPS Outlaws from Lucas Arts and remastered by Nightdive was shockingly good! Old-school PC boomer shooter vibe with a cool reloading mechanic.
Phantom Spark (Switch eShop)
Shat is back, this time spotlighting 2024's Phantom Spark:
A futuristic time trial racer with great controls that teaches you how to take good racing lines and exit corners through smaller challenges, and then strings them together in longer courses that serve as "boss fights" to advance. Ghosts are supported, and the game is very addictive for those who enjoy time trial racing. The scope is limited here, but it's nearly perfect for what it is.
That's all for the Ps. We're skipping Q and jumping to R on the final page and the poll...

The main takeaway from all of this is that it's okay to be called Shat.
Secondly, I would also like to recommend Ooo. Short and sweet, cute and fun.
A Dark Room was never reviewed or in one of these!? 😱 The game’s fantastic and can be found on sale for as little as $0.99 at times. Sorry Toree, but this is the best game I’ve ever bought for a dollar.
Thanks for posting my shout for Rubato and I’ll also second that Öoo is one of the best indies to release recently, was one of my favorite games of 2025 and I’m so glad it’s on Switch where it belongs. I liked Lovish too earlier this year.
Filmechanism and Windswept are going on the wishlist.
I like this kind of articles! Can't wait to try lots of indie gems I had never heard about!
The Space Adventure Cobra anime was one of the inspirations for Metroid (NES) I really liked the demo and planning to definitely buy it on sale
Glad Battle Suit Aces got a couple of mentions, I was going to mention that one too. Wonderful game.
I also enjoyed Iris and the Giant a lot and gave TR-49 on my to-play list, and Death Howl on the wishlist.
Easily the best segment on NintendoLife. I find more to play here then anywhere else.
Windswept is an excellent game, highly recommended for any DKC fan. I was a bit disappointed with City Hunter, however: it's very expensive and the extra content isn't very interesting. Even for a PC Engine game, it's mediocre, with few similar levels and few enemies. In my opinion, it lacks the anime style. Ok they put Get Wild but it's not worth the €25.
Nintendo Insider gave Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster and Deadzone: Rogue both a 9 out of 10.
Crazy that NL missed Deadzone Rogue
I've had Lunar Lux on my radar for a while, it's also on sale right now in the eshop so I'm thinking of giving it a shot.
Good reminder to pick up Ooo, Deadzone Rogue, and Battle Suit Aces!
I love these articles; I wish they were more often. There are a lot of games I haven't heard of this time ao I'll have to check some out.
Of these I really like Öoo. One of those games that is not only clever, it makes you feel clever. And don't we all want that?
Unfortunately I didn't get on as well with Big Hops. Froglad feels good to control and it looks nice, but the levels are unfocussed and baggy, and the voice acting is mince.
Hopefully someday I'll be getting into the nitty gritty of eShop gems. For now, there's such a supply of widely acclaimed games that I mostly just stick with those.
I do have a few of these games on my wishlist, though.
Battle Suit Aces sounds like my kind of game! Never heard of it before, even though I liked Battle Chef Brigade.
Looks like some bangers in there - probably give Battle Suit ACES a crack.
Not surprising there’s so many titles that fly under the radar - with all the grit (or at least something that rhymes with it) on the old eShop scope, I’m surprised we haven’t crashed on a snow planet and had to burn camphor-wood soldiers to stay warm.
Still - nice to see they’ve sorted out all that hentAI slop though, eh? 🙄
I love indies!
Multiple of these games intrigue me. Working through the recommendations. So far: big hops and death howl. That said, there’s only so much time…
Also: isnt filmechanism actually a sort of Braid?
Lots that looks great here. And that Leap Year write-up definitely had me sold!
Dude, Vertical Strike endless challenge is an asset flip. Do NOT recommend people to buy asset flips.
Hunt down is amazing! Any pixel art fans of Megadrive or SNES run and gun games should try this delicious title out.
Can confirm Deadzone is hell of a lot of fun.
