7. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (Switch)

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is one of the most colourful, approachable, and downright endearing RPGs you’ll find on the Switch. Its new story chapter, music tracks, and character assists improve on the original to an extent, but not enough to affect its overall quality. Thankfully, what was there was already fantastic, meaning those who missed out on it the first time around really have no reason not to get stuck in now.

On balance, this RPG is significantly more Shin Megami Tensei than Fire Emblem, so Fire Emblem fans take note. But it's a great time nonetheless, so if you missed this on the Wii U, snap up this one on Switch.

6. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux (3DS)

From its demon collecting and killer combat to its sci-fi South Pole setting, Strange Journey Redux is a fantastically engrossing adventure, and an excellent reason to get lost in your 3DS once again.

As a remake of a DS classic, Redux adds in enough new content to make a replay worth your time, along with plenty of welcome accessibility tweaks to help let newcomers in on one of Shin Megami Tensei’s best-kept secrets.

Many consider this to be inferior to the original DS game, but we think Strange Journey — Redux or otherwise — is a can’t-miss trip for JRPG fans.

5. Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster (Switch)

Shin Megami Tensei III HD Remaster is indisputably the best way to play this RPG classic, but it’s also rather clear that this nearly two-decade-old game is showing its age.

An interesting story, enjoyable combat system, and engaging demon recruitment and fusion mechanics make Shin Megami Tensei III well worth your time, but the dated visuals, poor quality music, and occasionally unforgiving mechanics hold it back from being excellent.

We’d give this a recommendation to both longtime fans and newcomers, but with the caveat that you might want to wait for a sale.

4. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (DS)

Often considered one of the best SMT games — not just spin-offs — Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is a fantastic strategy RPG that blends the tone and difficulty of the series with a new gameplay style. There's an incredible amount of depth and customisation available to you, plus tons of map variety, so even when you're grinding, the game doesn't feel stale.

Pair it with an excellent story, and you have yet another fantastic DS RPG. If you don't have a DS to hand, the enhanced 3DS Overclocked version is worth checking out.

3. Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)

Shin Megami Tensei IV has it all: an exciting story with multiple paths and memorable characters, a captivating cast of monsters, fun, engaging combat, and a whole heap of style. Any RPG fan up for a dark adventure will have a blast here; you don't need any background in the MegaTen series to enjoy it, and the well-balanced Easy mode means anyone can get in on the action.

Even with the 3DS being abundant with RPGs, SMTIV still stands out from the pack and is a game to savour for fans or newcomers alike.

2. Shin Megami Tensei V (Switch)

Shin Megami Tensei V is a modern masterpiece. It successfully delivered on all the aspects that have made the series thus far so popular with fans — namely through its high difficulty, heavy narrative themes, and expansive team-building options — while polishing up and tightening the weaker aspects.

Things like a more easily navigable map and more difficulty options to cater to players of all skill levels comfortably make this the most approachable series entry, and it feels like there are more things to do in the world than ever before.

The newer Vengeance version arguably makes this original irrelevant — so much so that Atlus has removed this from the eShop — but if for some reason this is the SMTV you have access to, you're not going to feel short-changed.

1. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (Switch)

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is a stellar example of an enhanced re-release done right - which is fortunate, as the original version was delisted when this launched.

Vengeance's comprehensive approach to improving the story and various gameplay systems of the original release makes for an experience that’s even more engrossing. Though we were disappointed by the lack of any performance gains here, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is still an extremely easy recommendation for any RPG fans.

Some may consider SMT to be “Persona without the heart,” but SMT V: Vengeance cleanly demonstrates that this old Atlus stalwart still has an abundance of fantastic gameplay and unique appeal. A wonderful game.
