As a fan of the first and especially the second Dark Witch games, let me just say what a disappointment this one is. They basically watered it down and over-simplified it to the point that it's not fun anymore. No more Mega Man-esque weapon system, you can only have one item type to use during a stage, the power-ups have been reduced to just speed, wing, and shot width, and the stages themselves are more tedious than challenging.
If you're planning to play any game in the Dark Witch series, just skip this one and play Episode 2 instead.
@Seanmyster6 Don't forget the removal of the Syega Shop and the Syegas, which added a TRUCKLOAD of replay value to the first two games and Brave Dungeon! Especially on the second game, I lost count on how many times I replayed each game that had this staple and it was satisfying to the right-here! Without it, all of the unlockables in Dark Witch 3 now require you to amass a truckload of Tres to unlock extras one by one, which is tedious as heck to unlock them all.
Oh well, the wait for the true third game in the Dark Witch series continues...
After a good 2 years of playing the Dark Witch series, I can say I enjoyed it. My two main issues are what I call the Sonic Heroes issue. What do I mean?
1. The controls.
They feel pretty sensitive compared to Dark Witch 1 + 2. And the physics are awful. They also nerfed the wing ability pretty harshly. Why change these? They were simple, but they worked.
2. The Stage Length
These stages can go on for 8+ minutes! What the heck?! It feels like a marathon. I’m okay with longer stages near the end, but jesus, the entire game is like this.
All of the other changes didn’t really affect my opinion of the main game, but these 2 specifically are stopping me from giving this an 8/10. A Dark Witch 3 Renovation, or something else would be nice to fix these issues.
