Stop us if you've heard this one. A guy by the nom de plume of Pixel made a really great game all by himself and released it on PC for free in 2004. It's called... Oh, so you have heard it. We thought so. In 2012, Cave Story needs no introduction. It's not an unknown quantity. In fact, not counting this eShop release, publisher Nicalis...

News Nicalis Is Issuing DMCA Takedown Notices To Free Versions Of Cave Story
"Do not support Nicalis. Do not buy Nicalis games"
Update: Ema – who worked on a fork of the CSE2 version of Cave Story – has gotten in touch to clarify some points: 1. This DMCA is strictly for CSE2, the fanmade decompilation of the original freeware version of Cave Story. Said freeware version is unaffected by the takedown, and can be...
News Nicalis Tweet Hints at Cave Story Port Coming to Nintendo Switch
Maybe even a physical release
Cave Story is one of those games that just doesn't seem like it'll ever be totally gone, but there is a reason: the game is pretty good. The game was originally developed in 2004 by one man—known as "Pixel"—and subsequently saw a release on dozens of platforms, many of which belonged to the Big N. There've been...
Rumour Cave Story 2 Teased at PAX South and Could Be in the Works
"Maybe, maybe not"
Cave Story is quite the tale of success. Developed over five years by one man, named Daisuke Amaya, it first saw release over ten years ago on PC. Since then, it's received universal acclaim, achieved widespread popularity and has been ported to numerous platforms. Taking inspiration from old school exploration and action games...
News Cave Story 3D to Arrive on 3DS eShop in North America and Europe This Year
Yep, Europe has been specifically mentioned, too
How many copies of Cave Story does it take to fill up an SD card? Just one of each version released so far, probably. Some games are particularly memorable and brilliant, with Cave Story arguably a good example, so multiple releases are somewhat tolerated. On Nintendo systems alone Cave Story's been...

News Cave Story is Finally Coming to the 3DS eShop in Europe and Australia
It's time
Some regional release sagas roll on and on, with publishers on tight budgets or with limited resources sometimes deciding not to jump through the hoops for ratings and approval in Europe and Australia, particularly. One example has been running for so long that those asking for it gradually forgot to complain any more — Cave Story on the...
News Renegade Kid and Nicalis Titles Reduced on eShop Platforms
Ho ho holy moly so many discounts...
It seems that the 3DS and Wii U eShop platforms are going discount crazy, with plenty of reductions in Europe today, more on the way, and now North America happily getting in on the act. Both Renegade Kid and Nicalis are feeling festive, in the former case across regions and the latter just in North America...
News Nicalis Quizzes Fans Over Potential For a Physical Release of the Cave Story 3DS eShop Version
Europe says hi
Cave Story has been released four times in total, though that number drops to two if you live in PAL regions. We've had versions on WiiWare, DSiWare, a retail Cave Story 3D and most recently an excellent 3DS eShop version. The latter edition is arguably the best, incorp
News Cave Story Approved And Set For Release On The European eShop
Saints be praised
When it comes to Nintendo Downloads, wherever you live there are certain releases that are much in demand and mysterious in their delay. They're not actually mysterious in practice, but the result of developers encountering specific issues with the Nintendo organisation in question, securing ratings or, perhaps, not having the...
News Cave Story Fix is "Coming Soon"
Curly Story will be saved
If you haven't read our Cave Story review, then let us sum it up for you: we loved it. The eShop version of the indie game that started it all is fantastic, except for one issue. It turns out that some people are having problems with the Curly Story mode. Specifically, they can't get past the first couple of screens...

I guess this will basically be the WiiWare version with some 3D thrown in? I'll probably get this one.
didn they just release Cave Story 3D as a retail game? Happy I didnt purchase it now.
Nice
I couldn't for the life of me find Cave Story 3D in stores. I guess that's a good thing now.
I wasn't diggin the new art style on the Cave Story 3DS retail.
The pixel sprites just have more character. I'll probably get it offa the eShop... My 3rd iteration.
Man, I haven't seen a title milked like this since the SMB series.
Cave Story 3D is my favourite game of all time!
I think you have to order it from Amazon to get it now. . . .
Thr extra CS ports are like the ports of SMB over the years. Deal with it.
I presume this will be much like Cave Story + on Steam? It's essentially just Cave Story with supposedly better graphics and a few new characters...
It would have to show SOMETHING new for me to get it. I got the plain old vanilla Cave Story for DSi ware download and I love it. But I was not going to shell out $40 for a 3D version of the exact same game in a cartridge, and I'm not going to shell out again for the exact same game, again.
Im still gonna try and get Cave Story 3D because in the future it will probably be a rare find and a valuable piece to my collection!
YAY multi-layered 2-dimensional 3d (unlike a certain 3ds retail cave story release with emotionless 3d character models)
im buying this now for now
While the 3DS full-3D version is by far the best, it is recommended that you play the game in one of it's 2D incarnations first so that it can be fully appreciated.
The 3Dfull version is gorgeous and the soundtrack is to die for, the option of the quasi-2D sprites is also a cool feature.
However, the 2D+ version on the eShop for 3DSWare download (NOT the DSiWare version) includes Curly Story and widescreen support for the 2D version of the game as well as 3D backgrounds, text, etc just to add a nice bit of polish. You can always turn the 3D backgrounds off if that bothers you and just enjoy the widescreen.
In the end, the 2D+ version is worth it, even though it was my 3rd personal purchase of the game for the DS/3DS system.
As this game has extremely high replayability, for another lousy $10, you won't be sorry if you add this to your collection. Especially if you enjoy finding all of the little differences in each version.
This one saves to the SD card instead of taking up preciously limited system memory, which is a bonus in my opine.
I've had it for a while now, and I have to say this is up in my top 5 games of all time.
would probably be playing if it wasnt for my sis... shes addicted to face raiders...
teehee
WHEN IS EUROPE RELEASE????
Only 13 months and no European release. Nicalis sucks and doesn't care about outside of North America as usual.
omg I didn't know it was also in stereoscopic 3D...1st of May can't come soon enough peeps
SHOCKING! A game that USA has to pay more than for the UK. Good.
