OK, I'm seriously considering trying Mega Man again to see if playing it on the Wii will work better than on the GC. I'm looking into an NES title. Which is the best?

If you haven't played a Mega Man through to completeion, then I think Mega Man 2 is the best choice. It's the best of the bunch imo, and the differing levels of difficulty allow more people to experience the game.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Of the NES games it's sort of a tie between 2, 3 and 5. They all have pros and cons. 2 makes most things it does do right, but there are alot of things it doesn't do, like for example no sliding. Some of the bosses aren't super either. Mega Man 3 has some really neat bosses but feels sort of artificially inflated at times which does make it longer but yeah... The slide is there though. 5's biggest problem is that on occasion it feels like partially recycled content, but if you're not an experienced Mega Man player that not a big deal. Also, the Rush Coil feels really awkward. Other than that I'd say it's the most polished game in the series. You've got sliding and the mega buster and really nice levels and graphics. But really, any of those would be good...

Dude, I was in almost exactly the same boat as you. I rented a MM game as a kid, but other than that, I had never played any. I bought the GC Anniversary Collection and hated it because the controls felt wrong (they are backwards) and you can't suspend play or save. I don't do passwords anymore.

With that said, I bought MM 1-3 on VC and MM9 too. MM1 is hard the first time through. I went back and beat it after all of the others. MM2 was my favorite, but MM3 is really good too. My biggest problem with 3 is the special weapons don't make that much sense. Also, they tried to fit more into the game, so it does suffer from slow down. After beating those 3, I went on to 9, and that is my favorite so far. It's just perfect. It takes everything that worked from the others and gets rid of everything that doesn't work. There's no slow down. The music is memorable. The weapons make sense. Great game!

Since then, I have started playing MM4-6 via an emulator. MM4 was weak. So far, MM5 is really fun and really solid, but I haven't beat it yet. It seems like they were running out of ideas for bosses though. I'm looking forward to MM6.

To make a long story short, MM2 is my favorite of the NES games so far, but MM9 is my favorite all together. Just buy them all. You won't regret it.

I know very little about the series, so I'll take Mega Man 2. It's probably the best selling of the NES games for a reason.

Mega Man Anniversary Collection can save your game...

I'd probably say 4 or 5 is the best of the bunch. Mega Man 2 is somewhat generic, and basic.

Mega Man 2 got such a horrible PAL conversion, that even the music runs slower. You cant believe how much that damages the experience if you know the original tunes.

My vote goes for Mega Man 3. Besides running better in PAL, it seems much more balanced to me then MM2 and is one of the longest MM games for the NES. It also added Rush and Protoman and I realy like both Some of the tunes and robot masters are the best ever.

Then, there is Mega Man 5. It holds a special place in my heart, because it was the first Mega Man game we owned. So, I played the hell out of it and still like it in a nostalgic way. It is very solid, but suffers from bad weapons and two painfull castles.

I'm NTSC, so I won't have that problem.

I say MM3. It's the best MM in my opinion. You get a slide, which looks super cool in lots of situations, you get the bosses from MM2 and it's somewhat easier than the other 2. If you haven't played megaman games before, you don't want MM1. It's VERY hard.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
