Aww...all the StarTropics bashing makes me sad...

To be fair, though, I understand a lot of it. I have pretty much all the same complaints about the NES Castlevania games. Crappy controls, cheap deaths...LAME! But for some reason, I've always loved StarTropics anyway. I find the character Mike Jones perfectly charming (bananas in ears...yay!). And, as I think I've said before in this thread, I just like top-down more than side-scrolling.

Also, I have the Nintendo Power maps for both StarTropics titles. I cannot BEGIN to tell you how invaluable those are! I do feel sorry for anybody who tries to play the games without them.

@Adam: Did you ever get around to trying Dragon's Curse?

I agree with all of this, though not nearly to the same extent.

I have tried Dragon's Curse. It is not bad but far from great, either. I'm not particularly interested in it and probably won't ever finish it, but if I have time for it someday (ha!) I'll try to at least play to the first boss (excluding the one in the intro, which hardly counts) to get a better feel for the game.

I don't recall Star Tropics using the instant death thing often. I thought it was funny, actually. Unlike many of the much more annoying flaws with the game, this should only kill you once since you'll know where it is after, and if you aren't already frustrated with the game at the time, it ought at least earn a chuckle.

It used it twice - first as a funny joke in the first dungeon, then as a legitimate example of bad design in the lava dunegon ("here are two paths. Choose one. One of them leads to the next room, one kills you").

But yeah, it's one of those gameplay aspects that tend to get an extreme amount of notice from internet people, despite barely being in the game at all. It happens so early in the game everyone end up experiencing it, word spreads, people who haven't played the game hear about it and interpret it as "Star Tropics has a ton of rooms where you die upon entry", and then words on that spreads.
Yeah.

Are these what you're refering to? http://startropics.classicgaming.gamespy.com/scans.asp
Also, thanks for bringing it up, this will help a lot!

I never got lost in either game. I don't see that maps really matter, unless it gets more complicated later on, but you could have just mapped yourself as you went along. My problem is just that it demands too much precision for boss fights. I'm stuck in both games, though it's been so long that I forget which bosses I was at.

Yeah, Star Tropics...I'm not sure why you'd need a map for that. The overworld is strictly linear (with the exception of some optional heart containers) and the dungeons require significantly less exploration than even the simplest Zelda ones.

No idea about the sequel, though. Maybe that's more complicated.

Nope.
And speaking of optional heart containers, both games completely fill your life bar before the final level, so they're hardly a nessecity. They're all really easy to find, too.

@Sushie: Yeah, those are the ones! I didn't know they were all available online...that's awesome!

@Everybody else: Given the difficulty of the StarTropics games, I find those maps highly valuable for seeking out every hidden bottle of medicine (and some of them ARE well-hidden), and for navigating the space ship at the end of the first game (which is a huge maze). I don't terribly appreciate the implication that I'm some kind of idiot because I think maps are a must for these games, either.

Whoa there, never suggested you were an idiot. Just said it did not seem particularly useful to my own situation. A map is not going to help me defeat a boss.

It might if it leads you to medicine that will help you survive against said boss.
