I'm not saying Final Fantasy is a bad game, but unless you really want to play through the NES version of the game specifically I recommend Startropics. You are likely to be able to get your hands on one of the FF re-releases for the same price without having to wait on this incredibly old game engine. Its like driving on the Autobahn in a tractor.
You do know that if you set the response rate higher than 1, it'll be faster, right?

I was about 7 years old when I tried playing this game on the NES, and all I remembered was hating how slow it was. I don't think I knew. I still think that it's pretty impossible to not come across this game for some system if you go to a flea market or video game store and I reccomend a version that has more than one FF on it.

Yeah, you probably just didn't know it. Took me a while to figure it out actually, but it made the game waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.
And even if he could pick it up at a flea market, this version is free, so I can't see why he shouldn't take the chance with this one.
I was actually planning on getting FF1 as my free game, but I decided to get StarTropics instead, simply because I couldn't see myself getting that game otherwise - from what I've heard, it's a very difficult and unforgiving game.
Bleh. I actually really enjoyed FFI&II: Dawn of Souls, but the original FF is fine too, but a little bit harder. I hated StarTropics but I seem to be in the minority on that one. Never played RCR.
I recommend Zelda II, personally. It's a shame none of my other favorite NES games are even on the VC yet (Guardian Legend, Faxanadu, Crystalis).

Zelda II is a good game for sure, but an incredibly frustrating one as well. I don't think I've had my ass handed to me by Zelda game as much as that one. I liked it, but I honestly could only recommend it to someone with a lot of patience.
And Crystalis is freakin' awesome, one of the best NES games, IMO. The fact that it's still not on VC is practically a crime. It really is that good.
Oh, and I finally got StarTropics, and I have to say, it's a lot better than I expected. It's still incredibly hard, but it's always fair, and every death felt like they were 100% my fault, and all I had to do was make sure I got it right next time. It was never frustrating and always a lot of fun. Also, normally I complain when a Zelda-esque game spends too much time in dungeons solving puzzles instead of being out in the overworld exploring, but in StarTropics, I find the puzzles to be really clever, and incredibly satisfying to solve. I was really pleasantly surprised by it, and it certainly was a great pick to use my free NES game on.
So how far into Star Tropics are you? Chapter 3 dabbles a bit in unfair bits.
I'm somewhere in Chapter 3. I can't remember where, though. I think I may be in the dungeon. I started geting a headache so I had to stop. I think I got to the boss. Not sure, though.
Chapter 3 is where the previous "one dungeon and boss" system changes. Chapter 3 has 5 dungeons, only two of which has bosses, and one of which is incredibly small. Since you said "the dungeon", I assume it's the first one, which doesn't have a boss.

Yeah, I was thinking of my progress in The Legend of Zelda(which I'm playing alongside StarTropics, along with 5 other games). Now I'm on the 2nd dungeon of the chapter(there's 5?! Holy cow!!)....or was it the third? It's all starting to blend together now.
Oh my G-d, the third dungeon is long! This is gonna take a long, long while...
All three games are good, so what ever you do, you wont "waste" your 500 points
Star Tropics was designed as a "westernized Zelda" and it was one of my favorite NES games back then. I have to say that some players dislike the grid based controlls. Maybe today it isnt such a great experiance, then it was in the 90s.
River City Ransom is a very funny and unique game. A beat´em up with RPG elements is still to this day a concept that you see very rarely. I recommend this one if you have a second player available. Still perfectly playable to this day.
Final Fantasy ... if you like the franchise and want to know how everything started, then get this one. I think it is an "important game" but Star Tropics and River City Ransom are more fun to play.
i love all 3 games and they are great thats why i am also stuck between the games also really no one would be displeased with any of the games but with star tropics i always liked 2 better then 1
