Smithers [obscure Simpsons quote], there's something I must say: Super Metroid is easier than Mega Man 2, but it's not easy in general. Super Metroid is more fun than Mega Man 2, and both titles have tons of replayability in case you may not have found something. I'm sure you'll love both titles.
Metroid is better than Mega Man, imo, but Mega Man X will always be better than Mega Man to me. Also, go visit mic's page, it may lessen the number of similar threads.
Most people will be completely lost with Super Metroid (I was), so if you can't really get into the whole Metroid vibe, then I would recommend MegaMan 2. But if you can actually sorta get into SM and know what you're doing, then it's definitely worth your money.

Get Both. Period. But in case you're wondering: Harder: Mega Man 2, but Super Metroid can be hard to navigate. More Fun: They're both fun, but probably Mega Man 2 is a little bit more fun. Longer Lasting: Super Metroid will take you about 10 hours or so, while MM2 will take you about 3-7 hours depending on how good you are.
Super Metroid requires some adventuring, and you may get stuck at some points.
Mega Man 2's actual gameplay is quite a bit harder. It requires some precise jumps and has some annoying enemies, and there are spikes everywhere.
Super Metroid's boss fights are damn hard the first time through. Mega Man 2's robot masters aren't that tough, especially if you guess/look up the correct order in which to fight them. 2. more fun
Super Metroid, easily. It's a vast world with immersive music. There's adventure, there's fighting, there's cool powerups. There's huge bosses. There's lots and lots of explosives. 3. longer lasting / more replayability
Super Metroid. You can play through this game multiple times and still have fun every time. You can go through again and try to get all the items. You can go through again and try to complete it as fast as possible. You can try getting some items early. And you can figure out what the murder beam is and use it to annihilate Mother Brain.
Super Metroid is one of the greatest games of all time. In my opinion, Mega Man 2 isn't even on that radar.
Played through Mega Man 2 last night. EZ game. It's not until I beat Mega Man 9 last year and then came back to Mega Man 2 last night that I realized what a difficulty gap there was between the two. Also I went straight to the "Difficult" setting.
I enjoy Mega Man 2 more, but that's just me. They are both regularly in Best Video Games Ever lists, so get both. Mega Man 2 is cheaper, though, so I recommend that.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
@NotEnough - trust me--once you beat 9, all the NES Megamans, sans 3, feel that way, especially if you beat Superhero Mode. 3 is still pretty rough though--there are some nasty stages towards the end.

I really think it is diffucult to compare these two games meaningfully.
I downloaded both games a month ago without having played either game in the series before, and neither Super Metroid og Mega Man 2 is easy games for me.
Mega Man 2 is harder in one way, since you really have to play through the same level over and over in order to get your jumps and shootings just right. However i found Super Metroid more diffucult because of the many different kind of complex combinations moves you have to master.
At the moment i find Mega Man 2 more fun, because I find it much simpler. However, in the long run I guess Super Metroid will last longer, because there seems to be much more to explore and figure out.
I agree with jwl. It's difficult to compare these two games because they are very different. Mega Man is very straightforward, jump and run to end. In Mega Man it's all about dexterity and learning the simple level design inside and out. Metroid, on the contrary, is more about exploration, finding secret tunnels and upgrades and so forth.
