Just a quick question - I wish to play some of the VC games available and I understand that I need a classic controller to play them. I do also though play my old GC games and have 2 GC controllers.
My question is can I use my GC controller to play VC games - obviously my reasons behind this is that I dont want a room full of different controllers for my console.
you can, yes. for some games, this may even be the preferred method. however, i strongly recommend that you buy a classic controller, as some games can be nearly unplayable without it. Super Mario World, for instance has you hold Y to run/throw fireballs, and press B to jump. this is extremely awkward with a gamecube controller, and many of the jumps require running. on a classic controller, though, it's natural as the buttons are right next to each other. so a classic controller would not be a bad investment, in my opinion.

Depends on what games you have. The N64, SNES, and occaisionally the Neo-Geo are the only consoles on the service that require a CC/GC Controller. Everything else can easily be played with a sideways Wiimote. It works well enough for N64 games, since the GC controller is the closest in design to the N64 controller, but it's a nightmare with SNES games, since the buttons are very weirdly aligned. In Super Mario World, for instance, B is used for spin jumps, while the X and Y buttons are used for regular jumps (At least I THINK so). It feels REALLY uncomfortable, so... Yeah, don't do it.
Bottom line: If you play a lot of SNES games, go for it. Otherwise, you're good.
Technically the GC controller works well with all VC games. But I found the SNES and Genesis games been very hard to play with the GC controller, specially the SNES ones.
even then, however, the shoulder buttons on the classic controller are not pressure sensitive
but they are.. unless the spring, potentiometer, and 10bits (instead of 2 bits which would be expected for 2 buttons) are there just for show. Not sure if the Pro version has analogue shoulder buttons but so you might be right in that regard.

I don't think I have ever seen it used BUT haven't I seen the Gamecube Controller used like that on the Wii either.

And can you go a little faster?!
skywake is right the CC does have analogue shoulder buttons (not that I've seen any use for them); the CC Pro does not (because they're pretty useless!).
C64, NES, TG-16, Master System and select Genesis games: WiiMote only SNES, Neo Geo, Most Genesis and select N64 games: Classic Controller Most N64 games: GCN controller
It's really a wise to get at least two classic controllers and 2 GCN controllers. That way you are coverd for not only the games in which the right "feeling" controller is needed but you're also covered for 4 player games.
Future Wii purchases: Super Mario Galaxy 2 Metroid: Other M Zelda Wii New Super Mario Bros. Wii Sin and Punishment 2
Use the Classic Controller for SNES/Genesis games. I highly recommend it. Reserve the Gamecube controller for N64 games. Use the remote for NES and SMS games.
