I like them (especially Bullet-Hell games), but I feel that the shmup genre was meant to die in a way. I mean, it's hard to make a game feel different when the cabinet right next to your game basically has the same game but with different enemy patterns.
you are wrong. shump genre will never die! if anything there was the abundance of unoriginal shumps back in the day when the genre was at it height in popularity. Now the genre has just became super niche market, which does not mean the genre is dead/dying! LONG LIVE SHUMPS!
and @seanaron i think that shumps in the 90s ruled the hardest. i always thought that 92' was universally regarded as the peak of the golden era of shumpage.
Shmupage lol, sweet :3 That's why i got Gradius collection for the PSP XD
Well, this is a signature from someone, it says stuff, and you're reading it.
yeah, i love the old shooters. some of my favourites include. star wing / star fox (snes) super probotector (snes) strikers 2 (ps1) pheonix (arcade) moon patrol (arcade)
if you did all these things the online shump fanbase would for ever be in your debt. Ai Cho Aniki needs more love considering it is one of THE best games ever made. they should erect giant monuments to this game. a review of it might really test your skills as a writer, i mean gimmie a break i could write a f*@%ing book on how rad the soundtrack is with out even talking about the game! how could you sum up all that is Ai Cho Aniki? i mean if anyone could it would be you. godspeed good sir, godspeed.
I'm a little weirded out by Cho Aniki's appearance. Though maybe I'll try it out someday. I was quite good for the first half of Super Earth Defense Force. I could never beat the fourth stage in that game.
I still haven't played Cho Aniki, so clearly I'll have to download that to do the comparison. Ai Cho Aniki does defy belief though. I mean, even Muscle March cannot hold a candle to it. When I told my wife it was literally the gayest game ever she didn't agree, and then I got to level four or five with the naked muscle men doing wheelbarrows...
Love them. The TG16 has nearly all of its great shoot em ups on VC. Also Last Resort on SNK Classics (Man that game is hard!!!, got to level 4 at best.)
Just ordered Mushihime-sama Futari on 360 as its region free and cannot wait, broke my bank. CAVE are the masters of shooters. Im also still playing Ikaruga on 360 as have yet to finish it.
Will always stand by Battle Garegga and hope to see it hit the west in the current generation of consoles.
Ive noticed that allot of good shooters are not coming out in europe and wonder why is this. Ive learnt my lesson this time anyway and the next console I get will be Japanese or American. Never a european one again. EVER!!!
Sorry, quite an excited email as I have a passion for shooters.!!!!!

Good question. I played Castle of Shikigami III last night and it's pretty fun; love the Puyo Puyo-style story bits. If you don't know Japanese I'd get the North American version for the Wii; I'm pretty sure the Xbox 360 release is Japan-only. This and Ultimate Shooting Collection really should be picked up by Ignition or Rising Star -- someone!
Not really. I've always felt the genre was too bland. I do enjoy the occasiional shooter (I refuse to use the lame ass term shmup), but overall most of them bore me.

Does Sin & Punishment count? Because other than that all I can think of are the games from Retro Game Challenge. I think i'll get Star Parodier at some point...
Castle of Shikigami III is a lot of fun. My review is pending publication even now!
I downloaded and played Cho Aniki last night and it doesn't hold a candle to Ai Cho Aniki. The sequel has better graphics, better music and better enemies -- it's incredible!
I am well looking forward to Sean's ChÅtetsu Brikin'ger (Neo Geo) review, mentioned in comment 43 and in its game info page. There were not that many SNK published shooters, but the ones I have played like arcade Prehistoric Isle and Neo Geo Last Resort on Wii SNK Arcade Classics 1 were tough, but loads of detailed, lovely chunky sprite action fun.
I am passionate about retro gaming, from antiquated consoles to the continuation of classics. Obviously I love PSone, and PS2 retro games. I blast my ears to breakneck melodic punk, gruff vocals and nimble alternative guitar hooks.
