I've been in a Sonic-y kind of mood, and I was wondering what the best one was. I downloaded the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System, I belive it was, because it was the cheapest. Big mistake. There's tons of framerate issues and other annoyances. So what's the best?

Well, If you're good at them, go with sonic 2. It's the longest out of the first 3, and probably the best. I haven't downloaded any, but I've played them, and I really wish they had a save feature because I get game overs kinda often. But, if you're like me, go with sonic 3, cause you can save.
Your best bets are Sonic 2 and 3. Sonic 2 is the better game IMO, but Sonic 3 is also very good, and has a save feature, something this series sorely needed.
I would say I love all 3 of them but Sonic 3 to me is leagues ahead of the others, and while 3 is great, it's when 3 and Knuckles combine that truly makes it epic.
I would say get the collections on GC or PS2, works out a lot cheaper, my favorite from whats on VC would be Sonic 3, but I enjoy them all including the MS versions especially 2.
Sonic 2 seems to be the popular favorite, but I always preferred 3 for the same reason. They aren't hugely different, anyway. There's some occasional minor slow down in both games, I think (I haven't played them in forever and don't have them on VC), but nothing unbearable.
