I agree Link-Hero that gradius 3 is awesome. Gradius is a great series and that games was one of the highlights of it. It was probably the first real shmup I ever owned and it holds up very well. Actually probably better now than when I got it. The one hit deaths and initial slow speed really threw me off. Took me a while to even start to get used to it. Some of my favorite classic gaming tunes ever with some very solid graphics. This version of the game is much more balance than any earlier gradius which makes it a great starting point for the series. I like the customizable weapons too.
Not everyone even shmup fans like the gradius style though. Its very understandable considering the checkpoint system and how underpowered you are after dying and how frustrating it can be to die while fully powered up.
Still, gradius 3 offers many really tense moements, cool well designed level, and fun boss fights all to a great soundtrack. Shoot the Core!
I love Xevious. But, it's purely out of nostalgia. I spent many hours staring at that Arcade cabinet in the back of my Parent's favorite bowling alley. It's fun, and cheap.
If you want awesome, you might want to wait till Capcom releases 1945! Fantastic game! I can't wait.
One more opinion... Star Parodier is great! If you like "fun" over "serious" go with this one!
