"Retro (facetiously) claimed that a classic Nintendo game they would like to revive next would be Doki Doki Panic (which was Kensuke Tanabe's first game, and eventually became Super Mario Bros. 2)."

They did make a Zelda II sequel. It's called Ys 3.
As of writing this post I still haven't played Super Mario Galaxy 2 (I know, for shame) or Super Mario 3D Land (don't yet own a 3DS).
My favourite nostalgically (is that a word?) is Super Mario Bros. 3. When I saw The Wizard the first time I near crapped myself and had to own that game.
Super Mario World looks better and the addition of Yoshi speaks for itself. The suits were better in SMB3, though (Tanooki, Hammer Bros. and Kuribo's shoe!), and the worlds as well. I mean Giant Land/Big Island and Sky Land were awesome. The best version is definitely the GBA port! It's the definitive version of Super Mario Bros. 3, in my opinion.
That said, Super Mario 64 is a very close second for me. I love the tight, 3D controls and the inventive, fun worlds to explore. That and the music. The music blows me away some times. I'm playing it again right now and every time I got into a water world I have a nerdgasm over the music.

I absolutely love the tropical setting on Isle Delfino in Super Mario Sunshine. I thought FLUDD was a great twist to the mario formula and the game was a blast. That being said though, I think Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite mario game. I love the setting in Galaxy as well and it was just so epic not to mention the great variety. And sorry people, but the comet obsevatory ruled;not as much as Isle Delfino or Mario 64's castle, but it was cool and at least better than spaceship mario.
I don't know, I love nearly every Mario game I played. I'm currently playing Super Mario 3D Land and I LOVE it. I also very much enjoyed the 2 Mario Galaxies (going to purchase the 1st one since I only finished Mario's gameplay and I borrowed both). Can't say, they're all magnificent.
Best 3D Mario games: 1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 2. Super Mario 3D Land 3. Super Mario Galaxy 1 4. Super Mario 64 (not the DS version) 5. Super Mario Sunshine
Best 2D Mario games: 1. Super Mario Bros. 3 2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii 3. Super Mario World 4. New Super Mario Bros. DS (but I hate how 2 whole worlds are locked unless you beat certain castles as Mini Mario) 5. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins 6. Super Mario Bros. 2 (US version) 7. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels 8. Super Mario Bros. 1
1: Super Mario Galaxy 2 2: Super Mario Sunshine 3: Super Mario Galaxy 4: Super Mario 64 5: Super Mario 3D Land
2D Mario Games
1: Super Mario World 2: New Super Mario Bros. Wii 3: Super Mario Bros. 3 4: Super Mario Bros. 2 5: Super Mario Bros. 6: New Super Mario Bros. 7: Super Mario Bros. 2 Lost Levels 8: Super Mario Land ****! that game....
Super Mario Bros 3 > New Super Mario Bros Wii > Super Mario World I was never a big fan of the 3D Marios, but the Galaxies are hard to top. Sunshine > 64, though.
Super Mario Smash Bros Brawl. Awesome fighting moves, a wide range of characters, AMAZING storyline, good multi-player mode, and an all out good game. Though Super Mario Galaxy is in a somewhat near second.
