Just picked up a Wii U last week and Pikmin 3 was one of the games I was really looking forward to, but it seems to be retailing for around $70. Just seems like a bit much, anyway I can pick this up for cheaper?
It's a fair question, ItsLuigiBrah, as it is commanding the most $$$ for any NTSC Wii U title. The short answer, I'm sure, is supply and demand. Given its financial position at the time, Nintendo may not have overproduced it, and it is the type of game (read: Nintendo series) that purchasers are less likely to re-sell. When Amazon (US) does not have its own stash to sell, that tells me new copies are in short supply.

Pikmin 3 is out of print, and finding copies at all are increasingly difficult. A digital copy is cheaper now.

Is there any chance this will get a greatest hit edition for $20 soon?
If there would be a reissue edition somewhere in the future, I doubt it would go lower than their $40 budget-level price.
But the whole Pikmin 3 situation is pretty confusing right now. In October, Miyamoto hinted that there is a new Pikmin game in the works, released a Pikmin 3 demo and the short videos, but there weren't enough retail copies to fill the consumer demands (at least not in the NoA territory). But Pikmin 3 is a really really good game (both the main campaign and the additional content), and it's good that it's at least still available on the eShop.

The only thing I can think of that would make sense of the situation would be the announcement of a Pikmin trilogy for Wii U like how there was a Metroid one for Wii.

That's a canny idea. But tell me, for I haven't played any of the Pikmin games, what is the relationship between the 3 games? Is there a common story, progression between any of them etc. our are they completely standalone?
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Each game has a story progression. Pikmin 3 is the most "standalone" in that the game focuses on completely different characters than the first two, but there are hints and signs of the other 2 games' characters scattered throughout the world, so it's nice. But the first 2 games take place one right after the other, so starting on 2 might be a bit confusing from a story perspective. Ideally, you should play them in order, just to better understand the mechanics/story, but starting at Pikmin 3 is perfectly doable
Also: This game is rare now? -clutches copy close-
@gcunit There is, sort of... Every game can be played on their own, they each have their own storyline and a different objective. However, the games share the same characters. They are more connected than Zelda games. I think you can compare it to Metroid; the more games you play in the series, the more you understand the story arc, even though it's almost non-existent, because every game can be played fine as a standalone.
this was the last must have game for Wii U that I purchased, just recently from eBay used for $55.... the most I've paid for any Wii U game, including MK8 and Bayonetta new... it's worth it though...
The game currently sells for $49.99 used at GameZone, the problem is there's only 30 GameZone locations left in the United States and Canada so the chances of one being nearby is very slim.
