Hi,

After changing my router to a 5GHz model I´ve experienced stability issues with the gamepad screen, it can freeze for a second or so. (which usually means last place in Mario Kart)

I´m not sure if it´s the 2.4 GHz band (which is overcrowded), or my new 5GHz network messing up the Wii U 5Ghz connection to the gamepad which is causing it. My router is Asus RT-AC66U.

Any tips ?

The WiFi connection of the GamePad can be perturbed by other networks. Often it helps when changing some positions. You could try to find another place for your router and try it out.

My router had selected channel 44 on auto for the 5GHz, i picked a random one (136) and it seems to have fixed it !

Since the Gamepad and the console connect via Wifi 5Ghz, I would avoid using Wifi 5gh on your router completely.
Besides, the Wii U can only go online via Wifi 2,4Ghz, so 5Ghz won't be any good anyway.

I tried 5Ghz on my router just out of curiosity and the Gamepad still worked fine. But 5Ghz is useless because then my Wii U is offline.
So I'm wondering: How could you play Mario Kart online over 5Ghz?

Can´t avoid 5GHz on my router because I get too much latency for GeForce Now on Nvidia shield.

The wii u has a wireless chip that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, the 2.4 GHz is used for connecting to the internet, but the 5 GHz is dedicated solely to a proprietary super-low latency connection to the Gamepad and controllers (and you can´t connect to a router on the 5GHz bands). The wii u is awesome in this respect.

Changing channels worked fine, and the 5GHz bands has more than enough space for both the Wii U and my shield.
