Since Nintendo doesn't seem interested in making anymore Metroid games I've taken to anything similar. This game looks gorgeous! The power up system looks excellent as well. This is my most anticipated eshop game this year and it a great year for them.
Really looking forward to this release as Steam world dig only made me long for another 2d Metroid. The above video is for those who have no clue what I'm talking about. It appears to be the game running on Nintendo hardware. Can't wait to play this game!
Dude, there's like 5+ Metroidvanias coming out for Wii U in the next year. One of which has been out for a while elsewhere.
"the next Metroid" implies both it being a bigger deal (maybe they should be?) or that this is some sort of semi-rare event. It isn't. And there are more blatantly Metroid-like games in that sub-genre.
character designer/animator for teslagrad here! It's definitely more of a metroid style game than a post SOTN castlevania style game, as all of the upgrades are item-based and there's no EXP system.
The health system differs from both though, we use 1 hit death combined with a very lenient checkpoint system. this allowed us to make some fairly hard bosses and skill-based sections. We use an open map, but traversal is fairly linear until you get all of the powers. We dislike heaps of text in these kinds of games, so we worked pretty hard to convey the entire storyline in the game through the visuals, that way people can choose wether they want to explore and soak it in or just rush past it.
we're hard at work polishing the wii u version at the moment, really fallen in love with that second screen!
Just wanna say, I absolutely love the look of the game. Especially the sprites, it's great. Reminds me of a darker version of some of the beautiful, sprite-based 2d platformers Wii had (mainly Wario Land: Shake It!) where the animation at times reminded me shockingly of legit animated programming, which is crazy to see from smaller developers considering how even big games looked like just 20 years ago.
Thanks a lot! I'm a huge fan of Wario Land: Shake it myself, always preferred the look of that to NSMB!
Thanks for commenting in here. You must do regular searches for the game on the net lol. Always good to hear from someone working with the game!
From the first moment I laid eyes on this game it scream quality. Visuals aside, (because a lot of games look pretty) looks like you took a lot of time developing the weapon system and bosses!
If I may ask a few questions?!
First, are you using the second screen for anything special?
Second, you said it's a one hit death game, does that mean it's rather a short game and the one hit death will kinda lengthen the game?
Last, is there a 100% completion in this game or is it basically you need to find all the power ups and nothing else?

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
yeah, if someone had told me last year how compulsively i'd be googling to see if anyone mentioned us i wouln't have believed them:)
i think most devs do.
We really wanted to include offscreen play (best thing ever IMO) so that's the main use for the gamepad. when not playing in offscreen mode we use it for the map screen, menus and getting a closer look at collectible secrets
you never get set back much by death in the game, you always respawn close to where you died, so it's more of a design choice to prevent players from brute forcing their way through scenes without skill and critical thinking.
There's collectibles that are necessary for a 100% run that nets you an alternate ending. first time players tend to finish it in about 5-7 hours if they don't 100% it, most spend a few hours more if they go for a complete run.
it's possible to speedrun it WAY faster than that if you know what you're doing. In fact, there's a new game plus mode meant for speedrunning once you've 100%ed it.
Thanks for the responses! Looking forward to a price and release date soon! Now get back to work and get me that game lol! Although you should take the weekend off this week.

the launch window is "as soon as possible"!
we're not really sure how long the approval process takes, so i'm afraid i can't name a spesific date...IMO it's better to surprise people than to break one's word:)
well, as they say, a game is never actually finished, there's always something else that can be a little bit better:)
we could have submitted it now if we didn't mind a little choppiness between loading big scenes.
@Spoony_Tech I think both games look good, but you were comparing Teslagrad to Metroid so I was just saying that there's another game that looks a lot more like Metroid. I can see how Teslagrad has some Metroidish elements to it, but I actually like how different it is to Metroid. I mean, I like Metroid and all, but that doesn't mean I want every game to be Metroid. Teslagrad seems to be much more unique and creative. In the end, though, I'm looking forward to both.
@ollibald You're doing the characters animations for the game? It looks really good!
Yeah I agree with you. Raven is on my radar but I'm skeptical at best. I mean it so much like Metroid I'm surprised Nintendo will allow this on the shop!
