Hi guys. Wish my first post here was something on a more positive note, but apparently people are being a bit too trigger happy with their Smash 4 games. The circle pad has been coming clean off.
It doesn't seem the 3DS was built for the intensive stick smashing that people have grown accustomed to. More Casual people like myself/people who don't mash their sticks left/right etc probably won't have this problem, but it is concerning nonetheless.
The circle pad on my XL broke off due to my mom being too hardcore at Animal Crossing.
It's more related to how you play than what you play. The biggest factor is how much pressure you apply to it. There's absolutely no need to press the thing down, so don't.
Anyways the circle pads for the original are more firm than the XL's so I guess Nintendo shouldn't have shrinked the XL's pad and just instead used the 3DSes one.
Not to offend anyone, but a lack of self-control is most likely at fault here (or at least partially). Yes, some games require fast directional inputs, but that doesn't imply smashing the Circle Pad left and right.
I, for one, had my 3DS for 3 years now, and despite me playing some excessive amounts of Kid Icarus: Uprising, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Senran Kagura BURST, I've never had any issues with the Circle Pad.
On my original model the gray rubber comes off sometimes, but I just put it on and keep on playing.
What I find odd is that after I play the demo and go back to the home Menu, the 3DS displays a "Please Wait" message and soft resets, and that is the only time that happens.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
This is probably like when people said their DS hinges would break and it was mostly because they don't take good care of their products. I've never broken any handheld. The worst I can probably do to my XL is maybe make the nub a little wobbly.
@sinafela that also happens to me! The soft reset thing, that is. Don't know why that happens.
My original 3DS systems have that problem. For my first one, I wore the rubber out, so it was easy for it to come out. It was a bit stressful just putting it back all the time, so I just kept it in one place. For my second 3DS it was a short mysterious nd funny story. I just opened it one day and I found the rubber all... cracked and crumbly. I honestly don't know what happened there. But I used my first 3DS circle pad for replacement which later lost itself because it kept coming off.
So... not smash Bros..
Edit: Morphbug just explained why the demo soft resets.
After a few years, my circle pad's grey rubber covering has been sliding off for a few months. I kinda gave up on it and am just using the metal circle pad itself, without any cover, and no issues here.
In fact, my thumb slips less than it did with the rubber on.
Side note, my circle pad also occasionally sticks in the up position, but it has no affect on Smash whatsoever; it works great!

I wasn't applying loads of force to Tennis Open (It didn't break it just wore out).
Yeah, okay. After some years it's prone to wearing out, but that's why I wasn't pointing at too much force being the sole reason (should've put it more explicitly...). In case of @Joenen, though, I have no idea since he/she only showed examples of other peoples' broken 3DS's, and most of them look rather mistreated (what with the broken off parts of the Circle Pad), not worn out.
