Nintendo has a strong track record for producing the most rugged consoles.
As long as you know what you're getting (and its condition), you should be fine.
If its any comfort, I got my Wii U used (towards the end of its launch week), and despite a little lint in with the packaging, you couldn't really tell that anyone had used the thing!
I prefer white consoles over black because of fingerprints and dust.
I prefer black just because I like everything in black. I had the reverse of your problem when I got a Wii at launch. I really don't think it would be too much skin of of Nintendo's back to have multiple colors at launch (and not different versions) of a console. Different strokes for different folks.
