It's not a rumor. IGN reported the same thing.

NB has experience with fighting games. The Tekken and SoulCalibur series. Smash Bros. is very different though. Will be interesting to watch.

It's not the first time Namco's worked closely with Nintendo. They made Mario Kart arcade games that were released exclusively in Japan. Interestingly, the 2 Mario Kart games were the seventh and eighth entries in the series. That means Mario Kart 7 is actually Mario Kart 9.

They weren't in the main series though. They were just spinoff arcade games. So Mario Kart 7 is actually Mario Kart 7.
