If you read my post you'd understand that I was saying the reverse is true. Gaming isn't getting more expensive, it's one of the very very few things that is getting more accessible over time. And if your reaction to me pointing out the nature of inflation is to say that you dislike me "severely". Seriously. Find a new way to judge people's character.

You're right, but it's not by a massive amount really. I don't know about how US stores tend to set their prices but here in Australia the price gap we're talking about here is the sort of wiggle room you'd expect to see out of a little bit of bartering or maybe a launch day sale. Not to mention that game prices in the US haven't budged much at all so you'd make up the gap pretty quickly.

Plus there's a good reason why the Wii U is the "most expensive" in USD, which is why this is mostly a US thing. The Wii U happened to launch at a point where the USD was the weakest it had been next to the YEN in a long time. If you add take those USD values above and add the exchange rate at the time of launch ontop of it it looks like this:

N64: 33000Y
GC: 32000Y
Wii: 33000Y
Wii U: 24000Y

sounds like you love making assumptions about other people. you could be talking to someone who has played all the consoles and systems out there and has a legitimate opinion based on real experiences and you rather just discredit them?

I would like the thread to continue with friendly discussion about what people like and dislike about the Wii U please. no more derails...

My like has to be some of the most fun games I've played in a long time, and my only dislike is the time it takes to quit one thing and go back to the menu. (Not a huge issue but kinda annoying sometimes)
I own a WiiU and a X1 so I'm very happy with the diversity of titles to enjoy. All consoles have great things to offer. I'm not about to hate on any one of them. I'm using all my energy to enjoy my favourite hobby. I hope all of you are enjoying your WiiU's too.

Read the posts before you go accusing people of crap. Also there's no need to post so many small replies to your thread. All it's doing is bumping your threads up to the top and it doesn't add anything to the conversation. Between that and your snarky responses to anything anyone says that could even slightly be thought of as negative? Makes me not want to reply to any threads that have your name on it.

"stop replying to people!" "everything you say is probably bad!"

stop whining, nobody is forcing you to follow around a thread you don't like for several days in a row.

I keep hearing about this Australian Bartering thing, where you can potentially talk down the prices of stuff. I mostly hear it from shmoozing @$$holes, though. But is it seriously a thing? In the US, if you even try to talk down the price of anything other than a car or similar vehicle, you'll get kicked out of the store. Hell, even if they tried, unless the manager gives the go-ahead somehow, it's a surefire way for the employee to lose their job...

As an Australian of 30+ years, I can confidently say I've never heard of it. Sure, maybe at a weekend community market, but not at proper retailer, unless they practise price-matching the competition.

Like I said, I usually only ever hear it from smug jerks so I always assumed it wasn't a thing and they're either doing things that go against actual store policies, or just straight up lying...

I'm surprised by this. I suppose it's a fairly recent thing but it's definitely a thing and it's not just me.

went into JB moore park, asked for best price on play 5. ticket price was 592. guy was like best he could do was 560. pffft. walked away.
[...]
Hi guys, went into JB Hifi on Elizabeth st Melb CBD and asked for a best price on two play 3's. The sales guy claimed that "sonos are like apple, the have fixed prices". He then said he could give me $20 off each unit as there was not much in them.
[...]
A couple of weeks ago I asked for best prices from Harvey Norman, Auburn, Sydney and got the following:
Play 5: $467
Play 3: $351
Bridge: $70
etc, etc

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit more a part of Perth's culture than it is elsewhere in the country. Mostly because my guess is that this bartering thing is something people have picked up from holidays in Bali and other parts of south east Asia. Which I would guess means that given Perth is much, much closer to Bali than it is the rest of the country even it's maybe more of a thing here. That's just a guess, South East Asia is a pretty popular holiday spot for people across the country.

They pretty much expect it on some items. I mean there are unwritten rules, it would be pretty rude to try and barter down the price of a DVD or most items under around $50 or so. It also pays to be polite because if you're not then they're not going to even try to help. But when you're spending $100+ and especially when you start to approach the $1000s? It's expected. Although how much and whether they'll budge depends on a lot of things. Most of the time you'll just price match and leave it at that, but even if their's was the "best price" usually you can get around 10% off the ticket price, quite often you'll get quite a bit more.

Oh and we don't tip either. And nobody expects you to. It's just a nice thing you do very, very occasionally if you've got really, really good service. There's just an assumption that they're actually getting decent pay and conditions. Because they generally are. Imagine that! Infact I'd wager that in most places a waiter would just stare at you strangely if you offered a tip

@skywake Living in rural North QLD keeps me isolated, so I'm not surprised if it's common in Perth, or any major city for that matter.
I've haggled for white goods but never tried for entertainment goods (necessity>luxury), I'll give it a go next time I upgrade my TV.

There are definitely industries in NA in which some bartering is normal, furniture shopping or hotel rooms, for example. Almost anywhere where there's an actual sales agent earning commission, you can haggle them a bit. It's their job and they get paid for being good at it.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Fair call. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the margins for goods, particularly bulky ones, were a lot smaller in more remote areas. The fact that they don't have to move as many and wouldn't have as many in stock wouldn't help either. I'd also guess that you probably don't have the option to go to another shop and get it there, at least not to the extent that someone living near the city would. For example with JBs if they don't budge depending on what it is it's walking distance to five other stores that might stock it and a 5min drive from maybe another 10 more.

Although I will add that whitegoods are, if anything, a little bit harder to haggle than luxury goods. If your fridge dies the sales person knows that you're kinda stuck. They can be understanding (it's a huge, unplanned expense) and if they're good to you you'll probably come back, but they know you're going to buy the thing that day either way. With something like a TV or a gaming console? You can live without it, there's no rush and so there's plenty of "I'll think about it" time available. Dude wants to sell the thing to you that day otherwise you could go on another day (and get another sales dude), go to another store or just change your mind about it. So because of that they're much, much more likely to cut the price for one of those items so you don't walk out.
