I like almost everything. I dislike the Wii U OS. When compared to the other 2 it's like Win3.1 vs Win 7. Granted it's come a long way but man, is it still lackluster in terms of what it SHOULD be able to do. I'm willing to give it the Hardware limitation thing but still...gawd i hate it. Love the quick start menu though. Finally, lack of an actual Account system that ties your games AND saves to an account and NOT the system as well as the EXT drives not working on other Wii Us. What happens when mine dies? I lose all my hard earned saves. Not cool, even if it does get repaired.

Such has always been the case, but it's different this gen. Not a lot of consumers are going to buy $700 worth of consoles this gen, which is what you're going to be paying for a Wii U + something else. 5 years ago, you could buy a new PS3 and a Wii for $500. 10 years ago, you could buy a PS2 and a Gamecube for $300. Nintendo needs to either drastically cut the price of their console or make it the first choice for consumers.

Fat chance of either of those happening, sadly.

I can't see what's different this gen:

The only thing I really like about the Wii U are its 1st party games but that has little to do with the hardware itself. I'd like them just as much on pretty much any current hardware, Nintendo branded or not.

There are lots of things I dislike about it, though. Take away the awesome 1st party games and it's not that great of a console. Expensive controller that drives the price up and isn't used well enough to bother with, not powerful enough for 3rd parties to bother with it, sluggish UI, tiny hard drive, no real unified account system. However, we don't buy or not buy Nintendo consoles for any of these reasons. We buy them because we have to if we want to play their 1st party games.

I buy Nintendo consoles to play exclusive games.

I like Nintendo consoles because of their unique aspects.

Nintendo's gone a long way in terms of fixing the little problems I had with the Wii U, so I guess the only gripe I have is...there's no F-Zero for the Wii U in some form yet outside of Nintendo Land. Speaking of which, I dislike that the system has Nintendo Land. Oh, and I still dislike the lack of a decent account system. If either my Wii U or 3DS busts before they get that sorted out, I'm done with Nintendo. Period. That said, I kinda miss the cute downloading animations the other Nintendo systems have had since they went online.

And I just remembered about the original Wii U battery and how quickly it drained. That reallly sucked. I'm glad I got the upgraded battery.

As for my likes:

  • I like that I can turn Miiverse off, and that I can change the menu at the push of a button, and it remembers the style and cursor position every time I boot it up.
  • I like that I have folders now, but I also like having everything out on the menu so I can organize things myself in ways that would be easiest for me to remember.
  • I like that the eShop is actually easily navigable and organized in such a way that things are easy to find.
  • I also like that it changes the shop music frequently (in fact, Ninty should put the shop tunes on iTunes someday, they're all really good).
  • I like that the Pikmin are featured in the system transfer process, that was really cute.
  • I like that the system is able to download updates in the backround, now, and can even do it in sleep mode, so I don't have to worry too much about those like I used to.
  • I like how light the Gamepad is. It's also more confortable than I expected considering its shape. It's not super comfortable, but it's good enough, even for long sessions.
  • I also like how quiet the system is. It's quiter than even the PS4 I got next to it, though maybe a bit noiser than the Wii?
  • I'm happy Nintendo offers their own extended battery for the Wii U Gamepad, so now I don't have to charge it every time I want to use it. That was a pain.
  • I like nearly every game Nintendo has put out for the system thus far, excluding Nintendo Land. That includes even the Mario games for it, a series I'm not a big fan of.
  • I like the 5 or 6 retail 3rd Party games I do have for the system, even if it would be nice if there were more options in that area.
  • That said, the digital 3rd Party games have definitely picked up the slack. There's some really good stuff there.
  • I also like what Nintendo has done with the VC games' emulator, even if the selection of games could use some improvement.

Likes - Fantastic quality in the first party lineup

Dislikes - Lacks variety, worst major third party support I've ever seen, Aside from maybe Zelda Nintendo is yet to show us why the gamepad is necessary (there are actually some third party games that use it better than Nintendo ever has), I don't like the OS, tiny hard drive, stupid name, gamepad battery sucks, can't turn the gamepad off.... not Metroid (which would use the gamepad well) or F-Zero!!!

There's more to dislike than like, I suppose. But believe me, the first party games make me overlook all of the flaws.

support told me to write down all your serial numbers on your bar codes and all the numbers on the back of the Wii U or something and register all the games and the console and back up your save games on external storage, set up your account, and if you ever send it in you tell them your serial number and they system exchange your account and all the games or something.

the nintendo store lets you buy an upgraded gamepad battery which kind of sucks because it should have been the one they put in in the first place.

Like: NintendoLand, and the other really neat Asymmetric games that use the Gamepad.
-Fair implementation of a motion control option (though the lack of one in 3D World is upsetting).
-Harddrives are a consumer choice, rather than something forced onto every buyer
-Promising 2015

Dislike: Limited single player implementation of the Gamepad
-Terrible VC
-Too many disappointments
-Too many 2D Platformers
-Almost no sports games are even available
-Controller layout is clunky. That would be fine if Nintendo didn't have a near perfect design in the Gamecube controller

You could be right on this one! The majority of gamers will not buy two consoles... Especially parents who buy it for their kids will stick to just one console, if they can afford to buy it at all...

Likes: For me it has to be the Gamepad. It is a lot better controller then people will lead you to believe. As someone who gets little to no time on the main TV (Kids and wife dominate the HDTV) the off TV game play function of the Gamepad has allowed me to game more on my Wii U then I have in a long time. Also love the games I have for it and as usual, Nintendo hardware is well made and I haven't had a single issue with it other then an occasional freeze in the 2 years I've had it. Hasn't frozen in over 3 months....think the last patch fixed whatever was wrong?

Dislikes: Really the lack of 3rd party support and quality of ported titles from a variety of software standpoint. I can only play so many games and there are a lot of choices for me but I am missing out on a few titles that I would like to play and I can see where people wouldn't want to purchase a Nintendo product if they didn't love the 1st party titles. This has been a problem for many years for Nintendo though and I guess I'm use to it at this point. Never has it been this bad though. Even in the SNES days though Sega usually had the better ports especially speed of play for sports titles.

Bottom line......if you like Nintendo games it is well worth the purchase especially if you look around for a deal.

No, a Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro. On my way to bed now, so google them if you want a visual.

Pros:

  • Off TV Play
  • Good Games
  • HD
  • Quick Start Menu
  • It doesn't freeze like the Wii does

Cons

  • Only 32 GB of memory
  • Not being able to use SD cards for extra memory storage
  • Outrageous VC prices ($4.99 for Doney Kong and Pac-Man?)
  • No GamePad support for Wii games that support Classic Controller
  • Pro Controller isn't included in the box
  • GamePad screen has frame rate droppage
  • You need to exit your game to fix the internet connection.

Jacob717

Well, if significance doesn't matter, I like the rounded edges Wii U discs have.

Jmaster

Inkling

Like:

  • Games. Why else would you buy a system?
  • Off-TV Play
  • Small and sleek (compared to other consoles)
  • Miiverse

Don't Like

  • Other side of Miiverse shudders
  • Tiny 3rd party support
  • Small VC
  • Game droughts
  • The hate us Nintendo lovers recieve

Remember this is my personal view and someone else may look different on this.
Like:
Wii U doesn't have a lot of games; but them it has is amazing. I only had 5 play sessions yet in Smash Bros, but I have played 55 hours!
The Wii U gamepad is not bad, just not optimal for all games. I prefer it for some games like Mario Kart 8 & Super Mario 3d World, but in games like Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros the Wii U Pro controller rocks! (like/dislike fifty fifty)

If you're a big Nintendo fan, or a collector, Amiibo is great both software and "hardware" wise.
xenoblade chronicles x
This is actually one of my favorite minor things, as the owner of a media hub it's amazing that it has two USB ports on its back, and two on the front.

Another minor thing: Music in the eShop, it's awesome xD

All software that is installed on the Wii U can be used by all users! Every user/mii can have their own Nintendo Online ID!

Quick start - you can start an app/game even before you start up the homescreen.
splatoon
So many controller options

Wii controllers and Wii games are backwards compatible with it.
zelda u
Off-screen play: When you just want to take a quick gaming session or watch a video.

The hardware shows you if a disc is inside!

Don't like:
Wii U Gamepad and Pro Controller feels a little cheap in weight.
Not many games is best played singleplayer. (Bayonetta 2 is awesome though!)
That you haven't bought it yet. What are you waiting for?

Edited on by JakobMB

I'm a Danish gamer, but I mostly play on Nintendo hardware. I love gaming local co-op, and playing Mario Kart with my cousin (she's owning me btw!)
My favourite game franchises are Super Smash Bros. & Sly Cooper.
