So I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Once the current promotion finishes, at the end of this year, do you think that Nintendo have something else lined up?
There was all the talk earlier in the year, along with the QOL initiative and the brand partnerships, about rewarding dedicated users, and whilst we have seen numerous examples of brand partnerships, in the form of Mario Kart/Mercedes DLC, McDonalds and happy meal toys in various regions, and most recently Nintendo characters on frubes, we have yet to see any real examples of the Nintendo loyalty experience.
Before I go any further with this trail of thought, I would like to briefly talk about the Nintendo network premium promotion. I have been a Wii U owner since day 1, 30th November 2012. I pre ordered, queued early, and have loved every moment spent with my little black box. Sure there have been the game droughts, but I've always been backlogged with all the great games anyway to really notice too much, and if I have found myself twiddling my thumbs, there's a good selection of Indi games out there to fill a well earned Sunday evening.
Which quite nicely brings me back to the point. I have purchased everything digitally. Maybe I'm right to do so, maybe I'm not, that's a discussion for another day in another thread. The point is, in doing so I have collected quite a few activation codes, 15 so far to date, £75 credit. Now, I could have used it towards a couple of blockbuster titles, but my personal preference was to use it to buy little Indie games, titled that I would never have probably shelled out £7-£12 of my own money for, but under the pretence of Nintendo paying for them for me, snapped up with the grace of a wild boar. And I've found some real gems along the way. Little inferno, Trine 2, Bit trip runner, art of balance, steam world dig, to name a few. Sure there have been some titles that, despite their obvious charm, just didn't work for me, titles such as Toki Tori and puddle, but again, I don't mind as I didn't spend my own money, and in the future, during the next game drought I may well pick them up and absolutely love them. The way I see it is we have a few big games to come this year still and the bonus of.a few more activation codes to go with them, so at the very least, I will probably get to enjoy at least 2 more Indie games for free over the next few months.
So to conclude, if anybody ever was, or is still reading this, Will Nintendo launch another little reward scheme for us, to keep us coming back. Or will those words go the way of TVii, still stated as to be coming 2013 on the Nintendo UK website......
"Once the current promotion finishes, at the end of this year,"
Wait, doesn't it end March 31st, 2015?
You can earn points until the end of the year, then until you have until the end of March to redeem them for credit, and have until the end of June to redeem the credit in the eShop. Weird, yes.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
I buy all my games through Game.co.uk, the codes are a lot cheaper than buying direct from the eshop, usually on par with amazon.co.uk retail prices, but you still get the full allowance from the Nintendo network premium promotion.
I hope they do something else to encourage digital sales after DDP. I've found Deluxe Digital Promotion to be a very good incentive for buying games from the eShop.
Hopefully. The DDP has pushed me to buy things on Wii U I might otherwise have held off on.
I imagine it'll just be renewed again if it has been successful.
I figure this, too. I'm not really sure what other offers they could do that can potentially beat DDP. Giving people 10% back on everything you buy and being able to spend it wherever you want is the best console store perk there's ever been, IMO.
I know there's Games with Gold and PS+, but if Nintendo does well enough with the eShop, they can probably eventually offer those deals for free. They already practically have with various eShop deals and free online. The only other step would be to offer some sort of other incentive to compete with the games MS and Sony give out every month.
An ambassador themed subscription service that offers certain games, ie N64 & DS VC, would certainly be something of interest, however, from a personal preference I would like to see the DDP extended.
I don't think Nintendo will do a subscription based service. Nintendo needs to capitalize on the fact that they don't have a subscription service, compared to Xbox and PS. That's what I think anyway. They need to offer as much as they can without putting up a pay wall.
I tend to agree with you. And I think that I their major strength in todays market, the fact that they like to do things differently. Aside from recent DLC offerings, they tend to offer a great product above all else. nd even the DLC on Pikmin I didn't mind paying for. I'm sure I will feel the same about MK8 and Hyrule Warriors.
Well, alot of it has to do with timing. Xbox has always had payed online, and now they've become reliant on having that sort of money, but have also been able to give more perks and features, because of it. The longer time goes on, the easier it is for Nintendo to offer that sort of thing without a pay wall. If Nintendo would offered the online they currently do, back in 2001 when Xbox Live first came out, they would have been charging $60 just like Microsoft. So Nintendo can offer consumers what would usually cost $50-60, for free.
Xbox Live and PSN also need to exist in order to know that in the first place, too, so pay walls in general have never exactly been bad either. That's why wherever someone criticises Nintendo's online service or console store, they don't really get the value of a free service compared to a paid one.
I'm sure Nintendo will do something else after DDP, but we'll just have to find out. I would be very surprised if a subscription service did happen. We can never rule anything out, though.

Thing is ideally for perfect online there needs to be servers in every isp (Or where it makes sense) which need to be paid for. (Along with dedicated links or at a minimum bandwidth).
That would cost money but it still makes it something absolutely worth paying for. (I don't use Netflx or Amazon Instant Video or Spotify tons but i still pay for them).
“30fps Is Not a Good Artistic Decision, It's a Failure”
Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
I wouldn't mind if they replaced the NA Club Nintendo elite status program with something like the DDP going forward, since we're apparently not getting any new exclusive rewards, and it would be better to get offered 10% off purchases for the upcoming year rather than getting offered leftovers of the games you chose not to purchase in the past.
