Nintendo could guarantee the Wii U a record breaking launch by:
Releasing anotherMario game at launch
Releasing anotherZelda game at launch
Releasing anotherMario Kart game at launch
this, as well as strong third party titles; of course nintendo games are usually best sellers, but with say the 3DS's 3rd party launch line-up, it was for the exception of say super streetfighter 4, in many cases lacklustre. the 3rd party wii U launch games outside of nintendo have to be better than the 3DS's.
No matter what, I find it unlikely that the WiiU will do anywhere near as well as the Wii did, simply because their core market (families) already have a Wii, and adding a U to the end isn't going to persuade them to get this new console, mostly because it's just far too easy to confuse it with the Wii (you even use wiimotes :/ )
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
Most of those families bought it after playing Wii Sports at another families house. To succeed, the Wii U will have to have innovative software like Wii Sports packaged in and those same families are likely to buy it again.

NSMBM won't be a launch title. Its too close to the side scrolling title. Unless they are the same thing and have some sort of cross play between each other,
WAT!

The Wii U is already poised to give us more originality and power than the PS360, and Nintendo seems serious about rallying third party developers over to them as well. It looks like they've already done everything they need to ensure the Wii U has a record breaking launch.

You guys are sure hung up on re-branding the Wii U. People had the same concerns with the PlayStation 2--it really isn't going to matter. Renaming the Wii U is the last thing Nintendo needs to worry about.

precisely. like i said, it's the games that matter.
I agree with SteveW a good bit. Though it might be a little soon for another Kid Icarus game after Uprising comes out tomorrow (US). Then again maybe not. Mario is always a winner. Not really a Pokemon fan, but that would probably do them some good. I want some Fzero still though. And Star Fox. I would love me some Smash Bros but I know that's got a while.

What I would personally like to see as a launch title is a 3D Mario game that is even more non-linear than Super Mario 64, but I know that will never happen.
@Adam It'd be odd for Nintendo to release NSMBM when there's a new 2D Mario game coming out on the 3DS at about the same time.
I'd really like to see something in the vein of SM3DL on the Wii U at launch, just with more variety and unlame physics.
Also, I think a new Zelda game is not out of the realm of possibility. Definitely nothing as big as Skyward Sword, but I could see something like Four Swords very easily happening.
How about some new Yoshi game?? Some reveloutionary too, kinda how Super Mario 64 was....don't see that happening, but..

@Shadx and @nickcarney: You both seem to forget that the Wii U isn't aiming to be another casual successor to the Wii U. The Wii was successful for broadening the concept of family gaming. Nintendo isn't just trying to re-create this with the Wii U.

I don't believe Nintendo would release a new Zelda, as they just released a brand new one last Christmas. However, a new 3D Mario is quite possible. If I am not mistaken, EAD Tokyo includes two teams. One just finished Mario 3D Land but the orher could be working in Mario U since SMG2. Anyway, considering how Reggie admitted they mishandled the 3DS launch by not releasing a heavy hitter, I am pretty sure they will have something of impact at E3 and a 3D Mario would fit nicely.
