Hi, i recently bought a Wii U and was wondering if anyone still played online. If you'd like to add me my NNID is figo77ronaldo.

I got a bunch of games and will need an external harddrive soon. I'm currently playing Mario Kart 8 and NSMBU

Nice to see some appreciation for Wii U! I'd add you but I really don't do much online with mine anymore. Don't let anyone tell you that's a bad system. More of an underdog but still good.

Yup, i completely agree. It's a great system and highly underrated. I've been enjoying the heck out of it so far.

@JuveLeo
People mostly just weren't down with the gamepad but as a gaming console it was still well worth owning!

I got it, but haven't played it yet lol. I've played the 3DS version and loved it. I heard the Wii U version is a lot better though

The game pad was a big turn off for most people and the lack of third party games didn't help either. It's not a bad system but if it was your only system at the time and enjoy other games other then Nintendo it was a problem. Also calling it a Wii U along with poor marketing didn't help the thing at all.

Calling it Wii U was a really bad idea. I think it would have been much more successful if they called it Nintendo U, lol

@JuveLeo But then the whole "We, You" pun would be useless.

@Tasuki The flip side was that the Wii U was a great system to own if you already had something else to play all the cross-platform games on. As someone who also plays games on PC, it certainly had a heck of a lot more in the way of interesting exclusives to offer than the XB1 or the PS4.

I'd also add that it's a great way to play Wii games on a modern TV thanks to the HDMI output and a bit of hackery can unlock the native GameCube support that Nintendo buried away in it. You've got access to all of Nintendo's prior home consoles via the Virtual Console too.

@Matt_Barber Right I had a PS4 along with my Wii U so I was still able to play games like GTA V, newer Call of Duty games and such not to mention all my retro consoles. But I knew people who only had a Wii U and ended up trading it in for a PS4 or Xbox One.

In a way the Switch is honestly in that same boat

I'd personally never own a Nintendo console in this day and age as my primary one, or at the very least I'd try and invest or build a gaming PC for the higher quality multiplatform releases, because really the only reason I still game on console these days is for each platform's major first and third party exclusives. Especially in the case of Nintendo consoles since I never buy multiplatform ports unless they're just games I happened to really like such as Final Fantasy VII-XI or indie games like Celeste, but I really value the Switch for its exclusive content just like the PS4. Games like Octopath and Astral Chain are the some of the finest examples of such games in their respective genres imo.

It doesn't matter what Nintendo system you have if that's all you have you're bound to miss out on tons of other great games. I was a Nintendo only guy for much of my early gaming days. Nintendo was dominating the industry during the Nes and Snes era so i didn't feel i was missing much. Then as my tastes evolved and I became interested in more mature games i realized i was half assing my gaming hobby. If you're going to be a gamer you gotta open yourself up to all types of games!

As for Wii U i think if the name wasn't so confusing and just plain rediculous and the gamepad wasn't trying to be a portable that wasn't really portable it would have done better. The fact that the switch can be taken anywhere and doesn't have to be near a hub to function is likely the biggest factor in it's success. People like that. It makes the handheld and console gamers happy!

@Zeldafan79 Sure, you're always going to need multiple machines to get the full spectrum of games in a generation.

However, Nintendo consoles have still been very variable in terms of the numbers and quality of third party AAA games that they got, and the supply for the Wii U was particularly weak. Only the N64 would rival it for the paucity of what was on offer.

Still, the first party games held up well and the indies it got later in life were a nice bonus.

@Matt_Barber
Yeah you can always count on Nintendo's first party games to keep a struggling system afloat. Both Wii U and N64 before it were definitely lacking in the 3rd party department.
